Chapter 1

The first photo from Mandy's wedding on Instagram only showed her.

My heart hurt a little thinking about how I couldn’t be there to support her. However, two minutes later, two of Logan’s closest friends posted updates from the venue.

One of the pictures was blurry, showing only half of the groom's profile.

I had looked at that face every single day for five years. I recognized him instantly. It was Logan.

He had this relaxed, completely satisfied look on his face, which I had never seen before.

I stared at the screen while sheer absurdity and crushing despair washed over me, choking the breath right out of my chest.

Right then, my phone vibrated. It was a text from Logan.

[Maya, something came up at the office in Auckland. I have to stay three more days. Eat well and get some sleep. I picked out your wedding ring while I was here. Love you.]

Looking at those two words, “love you,” my stomach churned with sick disgust. I dialed his number immediately.

He picked up on the second ring, using that same sweet, soothing tone he always used.

"Maya, it’s pretty late over here, and I’m still stuck at a business dinner. Go to bed, okay? I’ll talk to you when I get home."

Through the receiver, a girl's voice floated over the background noise. I knew that voice like the back of my hand.

"Logan, are you coming or what? Do I seriously have to beg?"

Before I could get a single word out, he hung up on me.

Of course. It was his wedding night.

This was the happy ending he had been chasing for years. There was no way he was going to let me ruin it.

I immediately called my younger brother, Ethan Brooks.

Ever since I started dating Logan, my own brother had basically turned into Logan's loyal sidekick.

Unsurprisingly, Ethan was at the wedding too.

Just minutes ago, he had even posted a fake, sentimental story on Instagram.

[Mandy, I hope you stay happy forever.]

He helped hide this from his own sister just to protect his secret crush. What a great brother.

The moment the FaceTime call connected, Ethan panicked and tried to duck out of the frame. Guilt was practically written across his face.

"Scan the QR code on your phone right now to mirror your messaging app to my laptop," I said.

"Maya, Logan isn’t even back in the country yet. Why are you losing your mind on me?"

"How do you know he’s not back? Are you with him right now?" I asked.

Ethan stammered, "I mean, Logan and I are in a group chat together. Is it really that weird that I know where he is?"

I let out a cold laugh. "Scan the code. Don’t make me call Grandpa right now to have him drag your butt back to school."

That shut him up instantly. He caved and scanned the screen.

"Look, I only went to Mandy's wedding to check things out for you since you couldn’t go."

I hung up on him.

When the desktop app synced, the pinned group chat name burned my eyes. It was called “Operation Cover-Up.”

There were four people in the chat. Logan, his two closest friends, and my backstabbing baby brother.

I scrolled up to read the messages sent two hours ago.

Tyler: [Logan is a legend for pulling off a whole fake business trip. His girl is waiting at home while he gets married to another person abroad. Nobody plays the game like him.]

Justin: [For real. He ruined Mandy’s weddings eight times. If he didn’t lock her down today, he was gonna snap.]

Ethan: [I feel sick about this. It’s my sister on one side and Mandy on the other. Tyler, are you sure my sister will not recognize Logan’s profile in that photo you posted?]

Tyler: [It’s blurry as hell, what are you scared of? Besides, your sister is so obsessed with Logan she’d turn a blind eye anyway.]

[Logan has made his feelings for Mandy obvious for years. You think your sister doesn’t know? She just refuses to break up with him, so she suffers in silence.]

[Look at her. She hasn’t said a word. She’s clearly taking the hit.]

Ethan: [Honestly, my sister isn’t the type to take hits quietly. My family won’t just let this slide...]

Tyler: [So what if you have money? Can you mess with Logan’s family? Are you guys gonna eat him alive or something?]

The last message was from Logan, sent just ten minutes ago.

[Getting married in New Zealand isn’t going to trigger a bigamy charge back home anytime soon. Ethan, relax. I’ll take full responsibility for your sister.]

I stared at those words and burst into a bitter laugh.

Five years of pouring my heart out to him, and to him, it all boiled down to taking responsibility.

The doorbell rang.

Standing at my doorstep was a guy in a sharp tuxedo. He was tall, lean, and ridiculously handsome.

"Hey," he said, offering a casual smile, "I’m the rent-a-groom Ms. Cooper hired. I’m here for the gig."

The post-wedding family dinner had just wrapped up, and I was sitting in the living room having coffee with my grandfather when I brought up Ethan directly.I laid out every single detail without holding a thing back—ditching class, flunking out, getting held back a year, and working with Logan to keep me in the dark like a traitor.By the time I finished, my grandfather's face was dark. He whipped out his phone and fired off a text to Ethan right on the spot.In less than five minutes, my phone vibrated three times in a row.It was a string of frantic begging messages from Ethan. That very same day, he slunk back to his college in London to make up for his failed credits."I never bothered fighting for control of the family business before because I thought he was my brother, and taking care of him was just my job as an older sister," I said, lightly tapping the rim of my coffee mug."But since he never saw me as a sister, he shouldn't get too comfortable thinking he’s inheritin

Logan looked up at Mandy, a sudden realization washing over him. The girl standing in front of him felt like a complete stranger. Was this really the girl who had taken his breath away when they first met back in college?Back then, they were constantly competing against each other, trading top grades, matching each other's drive, engaged in a quiet rivalry. He had respected that about her. She came from nothing, but she possessed an undeniable fire and fierce ambition, just like him.In that moment, he flashed back through the last five years, hearing Maya’s soft, gentle voice pleading with him again and again."Mandy hasn't had it easy. Stop going after her."I'm sure whoever passed away would’ve wanted peace, too. Wouldn't it be better to just let her be happy?"He remembered every single time Maya had put herself on the line for Mandy, genuinely treating her as a best friend."But... Weren't you guys best friends?" His voice dropped low and heavy.Mandy let out a cold scof

Ethan’s last words were so soft that Logan did not hear them. His mind was completely consumed with flying back home with Mandy to attend her post-wedding family dinner. When their plane landed, Logan opened Instagram.Maya’s story from three hours ago popped up with just three words. [Visiting home today!]The photo showed clouds outside an airplane window, with no one else in sight, but looking at it made a heavy, sickening knot in his stomach.Mandy posted about her post-wedding dinner, and now Maya posted about her visiting home. This petty back-and-forth felt far more serious than any of her past tantrums. That subtle, faint anxiety inside him suddenly expanded into full-blown panic. As their car approached Mandy’s family house, he dialed Ethan’s phone."Are you home yet? Tell your sister to stop making a scene. I have had like five clients and friends asking if I got married without telling them."The background on the other end was chaotic, and Ethan’s voice sounded p

On the morning after our wedding, the moving company was already at my door.I directed the workers as they loaded my boxes to haul them over to my other vacant apartment.Leo trailed close behind, lending a hand. He was tall, lean, and moved with a smooth, effortless efficiency.Watching him carefully pack my small glass trinkets into a storage box, my mind drifted off.We had gotten married, but I still had zero clue how I was going to explain to my parents and my grandparents overseas that I had suddenly impulse-married a guy in college."What’s on your mind?"Leo walked over and handed me a bottle of water."Are you planning to toss me aside now that I have served my purpose?"I took the water and let out a soft laugh."Not at all. I was just trying to figure out how to introduce you to my family."I glanced up at him. "By the way, don't you have classes to get to? Do you want me to drop you off at campus?"He shook his head, reaching out naturally to tuck a loose strand

  • Marrying Her Rented Groom   Chapter 4

Before I could speak, Leo pressed the end button on the call. While he went into the bathroom, I leaned back against the headboard and opened my phone.I uploaded a picture showing our marriage certificates. I typed out a quick caption with just three words. [We got married.]Over in New Zealand, Mandy was curled up in Logan's arms, scrolling through her phone. Seeing him repeatedly try to call me, she pouted playfully."What’s wrong? Is Maya mad?"She tapped his chest with her fingertip."Come on, you know what she’s like. She’s completely obsessed with you. She’s just acting out, hanging up on purpose to mess with your head."If you want to go running back to her right now, I’m not gonna stop you."Her words smoothed over the sudden spike of anxiety in Logan's chest. He locked his phone screen. He leaned down, kissing the crown of her head with absolute confidence. It made sense.Every single time he and Maya had an argument over the years, did it not always end with him

  • Marrying Her Rented Groom   Chapter 3

Leo took the wine glass from my hand and offered me a slow, unreadable smile."Ms. Brooks, since we’re getting married anyway, doing everything for real makes it look a whole lot more convincing."My throat felt tight and constricted. Throwing caution to the wind, I tilted my head back and swallowed half the glass in one sharp gulp. "Fine. Let's go get the marriage certificate right now."I should have figured it out much sooner.Mandy asking me to stay home and watch Logan, only to send this hired rent-a-groom right to my doorstep, was no accident. There was never a real groom for her ninth wedding, just like there was never one for the previous eight. From start to finish, it was always just a messed-up game of emotional tug-of-war between her and Logan.I was sitting right in the middle of it, playing the part of the absolute idiot.Sending Leo to my front door was Mandy’s twisted way of throwing it in my face. She wanted me to know that she was one of the masterminds behind
