CHAPTER 57.

*****

BROKEN HEARTS.

"What's your name, Ma'am?" Gabrielle asked after the woman put down the tray containing two hot chocolates. She exhaled heavily before taking her seat.

"Sara. You can call me Sara."

Gabrielle nodded. "Sara it is then. Thank you for giving us this chance to speak with you."

"You forced your way in. I never gave you any chances." Sara retorted and Gabrielle drew back her lips after sensing the hostility from those words. She looked at Saint for help.

The golf course stretched wide and green under the afternoon sun. Seraphina lined up her shot carefully while Saint stood a few paces back, watching. She swung, the ball arching cleanly down the fairway, and she let out a small, satisfied laugh before turning toward him to see his reaction. "Did you see that? I am actually getting better at this even though it's been a long time since I played."Saint clapped, "You are," he agreed, offering a small smile despite the heaviness still sitting permanently in his chest these days. “That is very impressive.” She beamed, practically glowing as she moved to retrieve her bag, chattering easily as they continued down the course. "You know," she said, "things have actually been improving with my father lately."Saint's brow lifted slightly. "How so?" "It's small things." She shrugged, though happiness clearly colored every word. "He actually acknowledges my greetings now. He responds when I ask him questions instead of just ignorin

The penthouse carried an unfamiliar stillness, the kind that settled into walls and refused to leave. Saint stood by the kitchen island, his fingers tracing idly along the edge of a report he had been drafting on and off for days. Three weeks of silence had become a physical weight, pressing down on every hour he spent alone in rooms that used to feel warm. Nicolas had simply refused to come home. Not that he didn't know where he was. He was safe staying with Aaron but just the thought of it alone caused his emotions to be all over the place. But what had happened had happened. There was no going back. What he needed to do was to simply focus on his decision and ensure everything went well. Right at that moment, the front door slammed hard enough to rattle the hallway and instantly drew back his attention. Nicolas entered without knocking. He looked like a version of himself carved down to the bone. His cheekbones were sharper and shadows appeared deeper beneath his eyes. He had got

In less than 48 hours, the news had spread fast. Nicolas Vale's upcoming engagement to Seraphina Blackwood dominated headlines across every major outlet. Social media erupted with speculation and commentary. These were two families that not much about them was known as they were particularly private about their affairs so just a drop of information about them was enough to turn the city upside down.Analysts and gossip columnists alike speculated endlessly about what this meant for the balance of power across Kingsport. Simon scrolled through his phone absentmindedly, standing outside of Sampson house while a forensic technician worked carefully through the overgrown yard behind the house, searching methodically for anything usable. He made his movements from outside to inside a few times.'Nicolas Vale is getting engaged to Seraphina Blackwood,' one headline read. 'A union of empires.'Simon's brow furrowed slightly, memory tugging uncomfortably at the back of his mind. He thought o

Seraphina paced the length of her room with her fingers twisting anxiously together. The two-month agreement had ended and there wasn't any possible conclusion yet on how things would go. The family was coming over in a few minutes to decide.A soft knock sounded, getting her out of her thoughts. Olivia slipped inside, crossing the room quickly to take her daughter's trembling hands on her own. "Breathe, my darling." Olivia said gently. "Everything will go well. I can feel it." "But what if he has changed his mind, Mom? What if he doesn't want to?" Her voice wavered. "What if these two months meant nothing to him?" "You don't have to think like that. No matter what happens, I believe genuinely that everything will work well for you." Olivia squeezed her hands reassuringly. "Come. Let's go wait for them downstairs."They made their way down together and the moment Seraphina reached the bottom of the staircase, she spotted Saint near the entrance and removed her hand from her

The café was quiet, with the evening light already filtering soft through the windows close to where Saint and Gabrielle were settled into a corner booth with the cups of coffee cooling between them. "Sara has been persistent," Gabrielle said, stirring her cup absentmindedly. "She calls me almost daily now because she wants updates on Sampson's case. She also wants to know whether we have found anything new about Elena's disappearance. I think she is being paranoid. She has probably been having nightmares too. I don't know. I am just worried about her." "That is understandable, given everything." "Her kids came to visit recently," Gabrielle continued. "Both in college. I ended up explaining the full situation to them so they would know why their mother needs to stay cautious and what is actually at stake if word gets out about her existence." "How did they take it?"Gabrielle shrugged, "They were scared as expected but they understand now." Gabrielle sighed. "At least

Nicolas sat hunched over the counter with the fourth glass already emptied. His eyes were red-rimmed and unfocused, ignoring the noise playing behind him. "Another," he muttered, gesturing to the bartender, his voice slurring slightly. The young man looked worried for a moment. This was one of their strongest alcoholic drinks and ought to be taken with care but Nicolas was doing the absolute opposite. "Sir, maybe you should..." "Are you deaf? I said, Give me another."Milo, who was watching from nearby with genuine concern, finally pulled out his phone, dialing quickly. "Aaron, I know you told me not to call you but this is very important...you need to get down here. It's your friend, Nicolas. He is completely wrecked."▪︎▪︎▪︎Aaron arrived within ten minutes, finding Nicolas slumped forward against the bar counter, another empty glass pushed aside. He looked at the bartender who acknowledged his presence with a bow before exiting the space, leaving the two best frien
