Chapter 27

Author: Your Candy
Isolde raised her brows and answered the phone.

On the other end came Sandra's deliberately high-pitched voice, dripping with pride and smugness. "Isolde, did you see the news? Today, the Palace Hotel—the most prestigious venue in Southbridge—is hosting an event just for my son.

"Alan insisted it be the grandest, most luxurious event ever. Every notable figure in Southbridge will be there!

"From now on, everyone will know my son is Alan's legitimate heir—his rightful firstborn and future successor. No one can take that from us. We'll always be one big, happy family."

Facing Sandra's provocation, Isolde met her own reflection in the mirror. She looked radiant in her wedding gown and felt only bitter irony.

"Sandra, are you sure you want to provoke me right now?" Her red lips parted slightly, her tone icy. "Alan's been waiting for me to be present there. Tell me, if I showed up right now, wouldn't that make things even more exciting?"

"You wouldn't dare!" Sandra shrieked like a cat

When Alan was pushed out of the room, Ruth and Sandra happened to arrive.Ruth froze when she saw him—his face ashen, his eyes vacant, as if his soul had been drained. Her heart ached, and anger flared as she turned toward the tightly closed wedding doors and began to curse. "That two-faced tramp! How dare she?! She knew perfectly well you and Bruce were sworn enemies, yet she still married him. Isn't that the same as stabbing a knife into your heart? She's wicked to her very bones!"Inside, Sandra could barely contain her joy—she felt like setting off fireworks to celebrate. Still, she quickly forced a look of concern.Moving delicately, she took Alan's uninjured arm and said coaxingly, "Alan, calm down, please. What's done is done. Our event's prime moment is slipping away, and the guests are waiting. If we blow it, people will laugh at our baby later."She tugged lightly at his sleeve. "Let's go back and finish this first, alright? We can talk about everything else afterward."

Bruce's eyes narrowed, and the air around him turned biting cold.Alan stepped forward, and his voice trembled with agitation as he tried to grab Isolde's arm. "You've gone too far, Isolde! This has gone on long enough! Come home with me right now!"Isolde stepped back, avoiding his touch. Her gaze was icy. "Gone too far? Alan, do you still think I'm just playing games with you?""If this isn't a game, then what is it? Marriage isn't a toy, and Bruce isn't someone you can use to provoke me. Wake up!" Alan's voice broke into a roar. "You're my woman! We've already had an engagement party!""Legally, we have nothing to do with each other," Isolde said, her tone calm but merciless. "The night you let your mother throw me out into the snow, it ended between us.""T-That was temporary! I had my reasons! I love you, Isolde, you have to understand why I did it!" His words faltered, collapsing into desperate noise."I'm sorry," Isolde said softly, her gaze no longer meeting his. She turn

In the next instant, Alan shook his head hard, trying to chase away that absurd thought. 'No. Impossible. That has to be Jane. Today is Bruce and Jane's wedding. I must have lost my mind. How could I possibly mistake her for Isolde?'"Alan! It's almost time. Why are you still standing at the door?" Ruth came out of the banquet hall, her tone sharp and impatient. "That barren hen not showing up is a blessing! Who needs her pretending to be my precious grandson's mother? What bad luck!"Alan frowned, but his voice stayed firm. "Wait a little longer. She'll come."He knew Isolde. She was soft-hearted. She wouldn't be that cruel.Sandra, holding the baby in her arms, watched Alan's distracted expression. Her eyes darkened. Quietly, she pinched the baby's soft thigh, and his shrill cry pierced the air.Ruth hurried to snatch the child from Sandra, her voice full of pity. "Oh, my poor darling, what's wrong? Don't cry, sweetheart."She glared at Alan. "See? He's crying because he wants

Soon after Alan spoke, his phone buzzed several times in quick succession. A flood of messages poured in from his private group chat.[Big news, Alan! Bruce's sweetheart, Jane, is back in the country!][I knew it! Back then, Bruce nearly died because of that woman. After she left for abroad, he turned bitter—couldn't stand women near him. Anyone who tried got burned. Now he's suddenly getting married? If the bride isn't her, I'll eat my own hat.][Congrats, Alan! Your cousin's been untouchable for years, holding all the family's power and keeping you under his thumb. But now that his old flame's back, who knows what kind of chaos he'll stir up again? Stay sharp. This might be your chance to strike while he's distracted.]Alan stared at the screen, the tension in his body snapping like a taut wire cut loose.'Jane Brown… Of course, how could I have forgotten?'Bruce had never shown interest in anyone else. Aside from Jane, no one could make him even consider marriage.'Isolde… Sh

"H-How could you… hit my wound?" Alan's voice trembled.Isolde stepped back several paces, widening the distance between them."You don't believe I'm marrying Bruce? Then ask him yourself," she spat coldly.Pain flared in Alan's arm, and blood trickled down the back of his hand. He stared at her, his eyes clouded with confusion and disbelief. His heart twisted in turmoil."Isolde, how did you become like this? Sandra only helped me have a child. Why do you have to keep making a scene? When will you finally stop?"Her disgust deepened at his self-righteous tone. He refused to listen or see reason.Exhausted, she turned toward Bruce, who had just ended his call.'Perfect timing. Let him explain and put an end to this farce,' she thought.Alan's phone rang sharply. Without checking the screen, he rejected the call, but the ringtone began again, shrill and relentless.Irritated, he answered. "What is it?""Alan! The baby… Something's wrong! He's vomiting and has diarrhea, and his
