“Weren't you supposed to marry Vanessa today? Aren't you worried she'll be angry if you don't show up?”

“Everyone knows she can't live without him. Even if she finds out you ditched her for Nat, she won't dare complain.”

“Exactly. Vanessa isn't as important as Nat. Adrian's looked after her since they were kids…”

They meant Natalie Ashford, who had grown up in Adrian's family as his sister.

Vanessa Bennett stopped outside the private dining room.

Inside, Adrian's friends were laughing at her. She stood listening, still dressed for the wedding he hadn't bothered to attend.

She pushed the door open.

The conversation stopped.

“Vanessa…” Someone set down a glass.

Adrian sat beside Natalie. Vanessa glanced down at her pink dress. She'd spent the morning getting ready for him.

She let out a bitter laugh.

“So this is why you couldn't make it to the registry office?”

Adrian got up and came toward her.

“We can register our marriage anytime. Nat just got back from abroad. As her brother, the least I could do was throw her a welcome party.”

“We chose today because it was our anniversary,” Vanessa said. “Did you forget, or did you just not care?”

They'd planned to celebrate both anniversaries on the same date. She'd been waiting at the registry while he was here.

Adrian reached for her arm.

“Don't start this again. I'll explain when we get home.”

Vanessa pulled away sharply.

Natalie spoke up. “I'm sorry. This is my fault. I didn't know you were going to the registry office today.”

Natalie looked up, her eyes filling with tears. “Please forgive me. I really do wish you and my brother all the best.”

“All the best?” Vanessa scoffed. “Would you stop acting? If you really wanted that, you wouldn't have come back.”

Adrian's expression hardened. “Don't be rude.”

“But it's fine for you to leave me waiting while you have a party with her?”

“Watch what you say.”

“Then tell me why you chose this over our wedding.”

“There's nothing going on between us,” Natalie said, beginning to cry. “If I'd known coming home would cause this, I would have stayed away.”

Her voice broke. As she began to sob, the others turned on Vanessa.

“That's going too far. They're like siblings. How can you be jealous of that?”

“Exactly. Nat left the country three years ago because you couldn't stand her. She sacrificed so much for you two. Are you going to start again?”

“Careful, Vanessa. Adrian might get sick of you and dump you.”

She'd put up with his friends for Adrian's sake. Even now, none of them seemed to think he'd done anything wrong.

“She's been hanging on to him all evening, but I'm the one being unreasonable? Fine. You can all carry on without me.”

No one answered.

“How can you insult me like that?” Natalie looked ready to collapse. “It's fine if you don't like me, but my brother loves you. He's done so much for you. Why isn't that enough?”

Vanessa had known Natalie for ten years. She'd heard these excuses throughout her five years with Adrian.

The first time, on Vanessa's birthday, Natalie had called to say she'd been in an accident. Adrian had left to find her.

The second time, on Valentine's Day, Natalie had called in tears, supposedly threatening to kill herself after a breakup.

There had been other calls, other emergencies. Adrian always left, and she always waited.

When Natalie had gone abroad three years earlier, everyone had assumed Vanessa had forced her to leave.

“He missed our marriage registration to be here with you. How am I supposed to take that? And why does everyone expect me to be happy about it?”

Natalie started crying harder.

“Enough!” Adrian shouted. “It's a piece of paper. We can do it on your birthday. Why do you have to make a scene?”

“A scene?” Vanessa repeated. “Fine. Adrian, we’re done.”

Adrian stared at her, then shook his head.

“This again? Last time you threatened to leave, Nat went abroad so we could stay together. I've agreed to marry you. What more do you want? If you keep treating her like this, I won't do it.”

Natalie lowered her head, but Vanessa caught the smile before she hid it.

Vanessa had heard enough.

“Perfect. Then we won't get married. It's all off.” She turned to leave.

Adrian shouted after her, his voice threatening. “If you walk out that door without apologizing to Nat, I'll never forgive you!”

No one moved. They were waiting for her to apologize.

Vanessa turned back at the door.

“You all heard me. It's over. I'm never marrying Adrian. If I go back on that, may he end up alone, childless, and miserable.”

Ignoring their stunned faces, she walked out.

In the rideshare, she blocked Adrian's number and his accounts. Her phone rang before she could put it away.

The number looked strangely familiar. She hesitated.

She answered.

“If you still want to get married, why not marry me?”

Edward brought Adrian to the Bennett house a few days later.Vanessa sat beside Julian in her grandfather's living room. Robert's lawyer had the papers ready. Nothing about the arrangement required another conversation about whether she was certain.Adrian tried anyway.“I panicked because I love you,” he told her. “When you said you were ending it, I did something stupid. Give me a chance to show you I'm sorry.”Vanessa looked at the unsigned agreement on the table.“That's not why we're here.”“Five years, Vanessa. You can't pretend they meant nothing. I'll tell everyone we're together. I'll put it on my accounts today.”“Don't.”He stopped, surprised.“We're here to end the engagement, not announce it.”Beside her, Julian remained silent. She could smell the cedar in his cologne, familiar now after a month of sharing a room. His presence helped her sit still without feeling she had to explain herself quickly before Adrian became angry.“Once you've signed,” she said, “there will be

Yolanda hesitated under Julian's gaze. For a second, she seemed more frightened than angry. Then she recovered. The look passed so quickly that Adrian didn't notice. Natalie was watching Julian, trying to judge how much he knew and how far he meant to take the confrontation. Arthur was there too, while Edward stood apart with the expression he wore when he was waiting for an argument to exhaust itself.Yolanda had expected the sight of Adrian's injuries to settle the matter. She had assembled every grievance around that bed: the violence, the broken loyalty, the elder son humiliating the younger. She hadn't expected Julian to speak about the woman who had needed rescuing rather than the man being treated in front of them.“Having control of Firax doesn't mean you can do whatever you like. Even if Adrian made a mistake, he's still your brother.”Adrian shifted against the pillows and winced.“Vanessa and I were engaged. We would have married eventually. I only tried to make her underst

Vanessa clung to Julian and cried into his shoulder.“His mother asked me there. She said she'd accept it. I thought…”She couldn't finish. Each time she tried to explain, the words broke apart.“I know,” Julian said. “You're home. He isn't here.”He let her hold on until the crying eased. When she finally drew back, he handed her a tissue and waited while she wiped her face.“How did you find me?”“You sent me your location. I knew where to start.”She nodded. At the hotel, she hadn't even known the number of the room. She remembered thinking that calling him was useless if she couldn't tell him where she was.But he had come.“You did well,” he said. “You told me where you were going.”She looked at him, still struggling to steady her breathing.“If something worries you, tell me. Even if you aren't certain.”There was no reproach in his voice. He wasn't asking why she had gone or why she had trusted Yolanda. He was telling her what she could do next time.It made the knot in her ch

Julian reached the restaurant to find that Vanessa had already gone.Daniel questioned the staff while the others searched. Within minutes, they established where Adrian had taken her: a hotel nearby.Julian was getting out of the car there when his phone rang.“Vanessa?”“Help me.”Her breathing was uneven. He could hear the effort it took her to speak.“I'm here. I'm at the hotel. Can you tell me the room number?”“I don't know.”She began to cry.He made himself keep his voice steady.“Listen to me. I'm coming. You're not alone.”He turned to Daniel, who was still speaking to the hotel staff.“The room,” he said.On the other end, Vanessa heard the bathroom door and hid the phone beneath a pillow without ending the call.“We are finished, Adrian,” she said. “Stay away from me.”He ignored her. He was still explaining how this would fix their relationship, how she would stop threatening to leave once she understood they belonged together.Julian heard enough to know she was in immed

Vanessa didn't ask Julian what he meant. She was afraid that asking would reveal how much she wanted the answer to be about her.“Why have you gone quiet?” he said.“Nothing. I was remembering something Adrian said. That you always accomplish whatever you set out to do.”His expression cooled.“You remember his words well.”She missed the change in his tone.“He was right about that. I do think you're extraordinary.”She looked at him with such open sincerity that Julian could only sigh.“Sometimes you're very innocent, Vanessa.”“What does that mean?”He tousled her hair instead of answering.“You've had a long day. Get some rest.”She went upstairs. Julian returned to his study and lit a cigarette. He had barely settled behind the desk when Leonardo called. The conversation stayed with him after she had gone. She could tell him she trusted him, look at him as though he could solve any difficulty, then bring Adrian into the room without realizing what she had done. He wasn't sure whe

That night, Vanessa told Julian about the invitation.“Good,” he said. “Are you worried?”“No. I'll explain calmly.”“I'll come with you.”She thought about that for a moment.“They don't know we're married. I should speak to them first. I don't want to make things difficult between you and your family.”He studied her face.“I'll take care of it.”She wasn't sure whether that meant he had accepted her answer. The next day, Yolanda greeted her with both hands outstretched. She complained that Vanessa looked thin and listed the dishes she had asked the kitchen to prepare.Edward wasn't home. That unsettled Vanessa slightly. He had always been kinder to her than Yolanda, and she had hoped to speak to them together. She withdrew her hands politely and sat on the sofa. For a while, Yolanda asked ordinary questions. Vanessa answered them, waiting. Eventually, the older woman's smile faded.“I know you and Adrian have been having difficulties. Men need handling sometimes. You can't hold on
