I arrived at Della-Ross Holdings a few minutes before ten the next morning.

It wasn't my first time back since I resigned.

I had been here once before, when I came to investigate the blackmailer. But that visit had been different. I hadn't come as the former CEO. I had come as a man trying to uncover whoever was threatening my marriage.

This time, I was walking back into the building knowing exactly why I had been summoned.

The board wanted me back.

I wasn't sure how I felt about that.

I steppe

It felt strange to hear from her again. For a moment, I had almost forgotten what it was like to hear Sloane say my name. Her voice had been familiar, yet distant, as if I were listening to someone I had known in another life. I had spent months wondering what I would say if she ever called me, and when it finally happened - even though I did the calling, all I could think about was how badly I had messed things up.The conversation had been about the board, the merger, and the decisions we needed to make. Nothing personal. Nothing that could give me the chance to ask if she was okay or tell her how much I missed her.Still, hearing her voice had done something to me.I sat behind my desk long after the call ended, staring at my phone. I could still hear the way her voice had changed when Chloe spoke to her. Sloane had tried to sound cheerful, but I heard the tears she was holding back. And Chloe had noticed her absence more than either of us had wanted to admit.I rubbed a hand over

I was in the middle of trying to decide whether I wanted another cup of tea when my phone started ringing.Maya’s name flashed across the screen.I smiled faintly as I answered, balancing the phone between my ear and shoulder while I moved the book on my lap out of the way.“Hey, Maya. What’s up?”“Are you busy?”“Not particularly. Why?”She let out a breath. “We have a situation at Reed Industries.”I sat up a little straighter. “What kind of situation?”“The board has raised concerns about the restructuring proposal. Apparently, a few members aren’t comfortable with the way the merger arrangements are being handled, and they want clarification before the next meeting.”I rubbed my forehead. “Clarification on what exactly?”“The voting structure. The executive roles. And, of course, your absence.” She paused. “They’re asking questions about whether you’re still actively involved in the company.”I looked toward the window. The afternoon light had begun to fade, leaving the room in a

Thelma showed up at my grandmother's house one afternoon, and I immediately started planning my exit. The last time we ran into each other, we exchanged unsavoury words every time. I wasn't in the mood for any of that.So naturally, I avoided her. Especially as she liked to act like the primary caregiver of our grandmother and basically the boss of the house whenever she was around.I was halfway up the stairs when I heard her voice."Where are you going?"I stopped.Of course.I turned around slowly. Thelma stood in the sitting room, her handbag resting on the sofa beside her. She looked as put together as ever, and judging by the way she was eyeing me, she had already noticed my attempt to escape."Upstairs," I replied."You're not even going to say hello?"I gave her a look. "Hello, Thelma."She rolled her eyes. "You know what? Never mind."I continued up the stairs, relieved that she hadn't decided to follow me.At least, that was what I thought.A few minutes later, there was a k

My eyes glazed over. I was bored with this whole conversation with my lawyer. All I wanted to do was sign the papers and be done with this once and for all.Unfortunately, Theo seemed to think that was the least sensible thing I could do."You're not even listening to me," he said.I glanced at him from across the conference table. "I am.""Then tell me what I just said."I looked down at the documents in front of me.Something about the executive structure. Something about the board. Something about how the proposed settlement could affect our voting rights.I couldn't remember the exact words, and frankly, I didn't care."Can we get to the point, Theo?"He exhaled through his nose. "The point is that we can't simply dissolve the business arrangements because your marriage is ending.""I know that." I huffed out. "Then stop asking me to make it happen overnight."I leaned back in my chair and rubbed my jaw.The meeting had been going on for almost an hour. My solicitor had joined re

I received a call from a strange number.Frowning, I stared at it. Having just gotten out of a virtual meeting with some of my staff, I didn't have the energy to entertain anyone else for the rest of the evening. My heart, however, lurched at the thought of it being Zane on the phone. So I picked it up."Hello?""Sloane, darling."My expression immediately changed.Veronica.I almost ended the call."How did you get this number?" I asked. She chuckled and it grated my ears."Oh, please. You know how these things work. I have my ways."Of course she did.I leaned back against the sofa, already regretting answering."What do you want, Veronica?" I said, my tone giving away my irritation. "Is that how you greet someone who's calling to check on you?""You're not someone I expected to hear from."There was a brief pause."I heard about what happened. Your accident, the baby..." Her voice softened in a way that felt entirely unnatural. "I wanted to see how you were doing."I closed my eye

As the weeks rolled by, I found myself becoming more and more hesitant to return to Seattle. Life was slow and had a steady rhythm here in London. The haziness and rush that came with working my very demanding job were nonexistent. For once, it felt nice to breathe and relax without having to worry about a dozen things waiting for my attention. My grandmother gave me the space I needed. She didn't ask questions about the state of my marriage, even though our lawyers had been communicating steadily. I was thankful for that. I didn't need any external reminders of what was happening, other than the steady ache I felt in my chest.I had also grown used to the little routines we had developed. Breakfast with my grandmother, afternoon walks when the weather permitted, and quiet evenings spent reading or watching television. Some days, I accompanied her to meet friends. Other days, I preferred staying home.It wasn't that I had suddenly become happy. I was simply beginning to enjoy having n

"You can't just move me into your house without asking."Zane didn't even glance at me as the car pulled up to the gates. The estate sprawled beyond them like something out of a fever dream. It had sharp angles, floor-to-ceiling glass. And it was perched on a cliff that overlooked the city like it

We are getting married tomorrow. Two days. That was all it had taken from the signed contract to the scheduled wedding. I had expected Sloane Reed to take the full three days, maybe longer. Instead she had called Patrick from the café, confirmed the date before she even stood up from the table, and

He walked in and every head in the café turned. I had already been seated for ten minutes, black coffee in front of me that I hadn't touched, the file on the table within reach. I had chosen the corner table deliberately. Away from the windows, away from anyone who might recognize either of us and

I woke up to my head pounding like someone was taking a hammer to it from the inside. My phone on the nightstand was lit up and buzzing in a way that communicated something had gone very wrong overnight, which I already knew, but seeing thirty seven missed calls from my secretary at eight in the mo
