Chapter 2 She's the Best

Author: Rosie Steppe
Rosalyn replied, "It's a resignation letter."

She would never lie to him, even if it was a white lie, as what he hated most was being lied to.

However, that left Carl's expression darkening. "Just let HR sort it out from now on, no matter whose resignation letter it is. Don't waste time on anything beyond your job description—if you have time to spare, why not go spend time with your grandma?"

And with that, he turned to leave.

Rosalyn's smile faded as he closed the door behind him. "But it's my resignation letter, Carl…"

-

At six in the evening, Rosalyn headed to Quayle Mansion with Carl.

Zoe came running to their car as they stopped, smiling at Carl with both joy and shyness.

On the other hand, the white dog in her arms didn't seem to like Carl very much and was barking at him incessantly.

"Quit it, Eggy. It's Daddy," Zoe chided.

That left Rosalyn pursing her lips, and she sneaked a glance at Carl, as he never liked cats or dogs since he was allergic to their fur.

Even so, she was left watching as he tapped the dog's head at the very next moment. "Feisty little thing, aren't you? Bark at me again, and I'll tell your mommy to send you away."

Rosalyn felt her own heart swelling with bitterness—she used to own a cat, and even though she mostly kept it caged, he had told her to send it away because of his allergy.

Now here he was, being all nice to Zoe's dog and touching it.

It was almost like his allergies were automatically cured when it was someone he actually loved.

Zoe giggled just then. "Come on, Carl. My parents are waiting inside."

She was a dancer and naturally had a slender, graceful figure. Her voice and eyes were also filled with tenderness—what man wouldn't take pleasure in such gentle charms?

Even as a woman herself, Rosalyn couldn't help staring at the woman.

Nonetheless, while Zoe and Carl walked on ahead, Rosalyn and the chauffeur quickly unloaded the bags and boxes of gifts they had brought along.

It was an important formality, as Carl had come to meet Zoe's family to discuss the finer details of their wedding with her parents.

As everyone sat down in the living room, Rosalyn sat in a corner, notebook in hand and taking notes, looking professional and dutiful.

Lawrence Quayle, Zoe's father, eventually said, "Well, that's all we can think of."

But at that point, every page in Rosalyn's notebook was already filled.

However, Zoe's mother, Allison Quayle, appeared concerned. "Are you sure you've written everything down, Ms. Jones? Did you miss anything?"

"Don't worry, Mom." Zoe smiled as she turned to Roslyn. "Haven't you heard people saying that it's easier to get yourself a Carl than a Rosalyn? Carl has kept her by his side even after so long precisely because she's the best."

As she finished, she wrapped her hands around Carl's arm and tugged. "Right, Carl?"

"Yes, there's no reason to worry when Ms. Jones is on the task," Carl said.

However, he was shooting Rosalyn a glare, a clear threat that she had better not mess up.

As Zoe had put it, Rosalyn had been by his side for so many years, flawlessly helping with everything from business to private matters, be it important or trivial.

That was why Rosalyn was fine with anyone else doubting her, but not Carl.

And he had to threaten her with that!

The coldness in her disappointed heart grew even colder just then.

"Oh!"

That was when Zoe exclaimed in realization and turned to Rosalyn with a smile. "Ms. Jones, would you mind becoming my bridesmaid? Come on, Carl—ask her!"

Rosalyn thought about her itinerary for that day. "Sorry, but I'll be busy."

Still, Zoe ignored her and purred, "Please, Carl—clear her schedule and make her my bridesmaid! I'd like to see her wear a bridesmaid dress and stand by our side, to witness the moment of our happiness."

Rosalyn almost sighed out loud right then.

Despite Zoe's gentle and almost harmless appearance, there was no question that she was a master at mind games. She clearly knew that Rosalyn was a rival and had her sword at the ready to cut her down…

-

On the way home, Rosalyn was silent, while Carl kept rubbing between his brows wearily.

When they reached Maple Park, Rosalyn alighted and nodded at Carl formally. "Goodnight, Mr. Grant."

"Wait—get me some ointment. My allergy is acting up," Carl said, loosening his tie right then to reveal the rash that had already covered his neck.

"Good morning, Rosalyn!"Rosalyn opened the door and came face-to-face with Sean, who was about to walk in."Morning." She glanced at the food containers in his hands and instantly understood everything.Whatever Eric wanted to eat, he always found a way to get it. Even if she didn't make it for him, he'd still get it delivered. Clearly, he'd teased her earlier on purpose."Breakfast for the both of you. Special order," Sean said with a flattering grin. He'd received Eric's breakfast list first thing in the morning. If Eric hadn't been injured, and if his wife weren't mad at him, Sean would've pretended he never saw it."I'm not hungry. You can bring it in," Rosalyn said. She wasn't planning on eating and honestly felt a little too embarrassed to eat it.Eric had gotten hurt because of her, but she took his bed and still gave him attitude. Realizing all of this after the fact, she felt she'd gone too far.It wasn't that she refused to give him what he wanted—it was that his bre

It was late at night, and Rosalyn, who hadn't had insomnia in a long time, found herself staring blankly at the night sky.Beside her, Eric was fast asleep. He had turned onto his side, facing her. His handsome face was slightly squished against the pillow, but it still didn't take away from how good-looking he was.Moments with him flashed through her mind. These were scenes she never tried to memorize, yet they felt burned into her memory. Some things slipped in even when she tried to fight them, and those were exactly the things she shouldn't let in.The thought made sleep even further from reach. Restless, she quietly got out of bed, stepped into the hallway, and leaned against the wall under the bright overhead light.Eventually, she pulled out her phone and texted Ken.[Are you awake?]He replied instantly.[Yeah][Any progress?][A little.][???][Are you in a hurry?][The sooner, the better.][Got it.]She typed 'sorry for the trouble,' but before she could hit s

"Eric!"The surrounding old folks's panicked screams made Rosalyn shudder. She wanted to look up, but someone was holding her head down. She grabbed Eric by his sleeve. "Eric—""He's bleeding. Call the ambulance!" Rosalyn's heart clenched when she heard someone yelling in the crowd. She struggled to lift her head from his arms, but Eric wouldn't let her. "I'm fine. Don't look."He didn't want her to see the blood.Just like the time Carl crashed in front of her and Eric covered her eyes, now that he was the one bleeding, he shielded her even more. Her worst memories all had to do with blood. The person who swung the object was David's daughter. She'd meant to hit Rosalyn, but Eric had stepped in and taken the blow instead. The nursing home's doctor rushed over and immediately treated Eric's wound, while David called the police on the spot and turned in all his children without hesitation. But none of that changed the fact that Eric's head had been struck and was still bleedin

  • Marrying Without You   Chapter 151 She's Definitely Getting Involved

When Eric arrived at the nursing home, he immediately found Rosalyn amid the chaotic crowd.A group of men and women with mean expressions had surrounded her. "Step back! This isn't your business. Stay out of it, or don't blame us if you get hurt!" one of them shouted."Today, I'm definitely getting involved. Let's see who dares touch Mr. Gingham," Rosalyn uttered defiantly. She didn't show a hint of fear, and her gaze was colder than usual.Eric had already been briefed on the situation on his way over. David Gingham had three sons and a daughter but had been a long-time resident at the nursing home because his children didn't want to take care of him.He had a pension and lived comfortably at the nursing home. Six months ago, his old house was demolished, and he received over three million in compensation. Since then, he hadn't had a moment of peace. One day a son would claim he needed money for a wedding, and another for his daughter's college tuition. Each child had some reaso

  • Marrying Without You   Chapter 150 He's Been Wronged

Since Eric was only fulfilling his duties as a husband, Rosalyn felt completely at ease. Even when he applied ointment to her feet, she didn't resist. As for all the other little ways Eric 'spoiled' her, Rosalyn accepted them calmly and without hesitation.Sean, however, was quietly wincing to watch it all. "Eric, you don't have to prove anything. I get it."Ever since he'd overheard what he shouldn't have, Sean had developed an unexplainable sympathy for Eric.He knew this was probably tempting fate to say out loud, but seeing Eric take such care of Rosalyn day after day, he couldn't help but speak up.They were husband and wife only in name. Just the thought of it made Sean's heart ache for Eric for a few seconds.Eric had been the kind of guy who, back in kindergarten, was already fawned over by little girls. He could have had any woman he wanted. But now, married, he couldn't even sleep with his wife. It didn't hurt, but the humiliation was evident."What do you get? Tell me

  • Marrying Without You   Chapter 149 Performing His Duties As Her Husband

Rosalyn shivered and instinctively pulled away."Eric…" She was barely audible. She was shocked, not just because he was taking off her shoes, but by the entire scene. In Rosalyn's mind, Eric was always the untouchable, high-and-mighty guy who seemed superior to everyone else. Yet, here he was, crouched at her feet. The visual alone was unprecedented, and he was even removing her shoes. If they were truly lovers, it might have made sense, but they weren't. They had clearly marked the dates of their separation and were merely living for their own needs.Even if he said his revenge was to make her fall for him, this act went far beyond anything required for that.Rosalyn tried to pull back her foot, but he held it gently in his palm, seemingly unaware of her discomfort or shock. Instead, he focused on a small reddened spot on her toe. "Why wear shoes that don't fit?"They were new shoes that were a little tight but still wearable. She hadn't expected him to notice.Eric was alway
