Masuk“After four years, we're finally back here,” said a tall man in formal attire.
“Are you ready?” he asked, extending his hand to a woman in a maroon dress that hugged her curves.
“Yes, this is what I've been waiting for all this time,” replied the woman in the elegant maroon dress, placing her hand on the man's with a graceful smile. They both stepped inside as the mansion's guard opened the door. The family members gathered at the dining table stared at the two of them with different expressions in the silent stillness. The servants bowed their heads as the two walked past them at the doorway. The man hugged the woman's waist tightly beside him as if she were a precious object.
A woman with her hair neatly tied up in a bun stared intently at the couple like an alligator about to strike its prey, especially the woman in the maroon dress. “You?”
The man in the neat clothes was just as shocked by what he saw there. He stared at the woman in the red dress as if he couldn't believe his eyes. “Avery?”
The old woman with the bun approached with an expression of disbelief. “What do you mean?” she asked, holding back her anger.
The old man turned to the old woman with a slight smile. “Why are you so angry? Shouldn't you welcome your husband's return warmly after I've been living abroad for years?” he asked.
The old woman pointed at the woman in the maroon dress. “Why did you brought this woman?” she asked.
The man brushed away the old woman's hand that was pointing at the woman beside him. “Keep your hands off my wife,” he said, shocking everyone there.
It felt like being hit by a hard rock. It hurt so much to hear her husband say that so casually in front of her. “What do you mean? Answer me, Leonard!” ordered the old woman.
Leonard turned to the woman beside him with an adoring smile that hurt the old woman so much. “Let me introduce you, Avery Diana Devon. My new wife and the new mistress of this house,” exclaimed the man, making everyone’s jaws drop.
The old woman stepped forward to face Leonard with sharp, glaring eyes. “Are you kidding? You married this woman behind my back?” she asked, still unable to believe what her husband had just said so bluntly. She hoped this was just a dream.
Leonard nodded. “I mean what I say.”
The old woman exhaled roughly and walked forward toward Avery, her hand raised in the air. “You cheap slut!” she cursed, but her hand stopped in midair.
Leonard held the woman's hand with a strong grip, making her wince, while Avery stared at the woman with a victorious smile on her lips, which made the woman even more furious. “You're smiling proudly when my husband defended you?” she asked with a stifled growl. She pulled her hand from Leonard's grip and turned to stare at Leonard with teary eyes. “Why did you marry your son's ex-wife? She betrayed Maxim and hurt me,” she said, gripping Leonard's hands tightly with her eyes narrowed.
“So?” Leonard responded flatly.
“You betrayed me, Leonard!” the woman snapped.
“Lower your voice, Sophie,” Leonard warned, grabbing Avery's arm and holding it tightly. Each of their fingers was adorned with matching wedding rings that looked expensive and elegant, which of course made Sophie even angrier. “We'd better go to bed. The atmosphere in this room is making me even more tired,” he suggested.
Avery nodded in agreement, and the two of them turned and left the dinner room, which was supposed to be filled with a warm welcome. Sophie screamed in frustration and threw the items on the table near her. “Aaaaakh!” Sophie screamed in frustration.
Maxim immediately approached his mother, who was throwing a tantrum. “Mom, calm down,” he pleaded, holding Sophie's body to prevent her from destroying the items around her.
Sophie's face was wet with tears falling from her red eyes, full of anger and disappointment. “How can you be patient?! Your father remarried that woman!”
“I know, Mom. At least calm down first. Destroying things isn't the right way to vent your emotions. It won't change anything,” he said softly so his mother could understand amid her emotions. He turned to a woman in the corner of the room who had been silently watching their argument. “Olivia, take the children to their room,” he asked.
Olivia nodded, and with the help of her nanny, she took her young son and daughter out of the room. Now only Maxim and Sophie remained, both still harboring anger in their hearts.
“I can't stop thinking about what's going through your father's mind right now,” Sophie stared straight ahead with red, swollen eyes.
“I think something's wrong. Could it be that Avery has been targeting Dad from the beginning?” Maxim guessed.
Sophie shook her head vigorously. “Whatever it is, I won't let that woman be with my husband,” she said. She walked away with hurried steps.
Maxim followed Sophie, “Wait, Mom, don't do something you'll regret.”
Sophie ignored Maxim's call from behind her. She continued walking quickly, taking the elevator to the upper floor, leaving Maxim behind. She walked towards an ornate, luxurious door and took an iron key from a servant. She inserted the key into the keyhole, but the door would not open. “Stevan! What is this?” Sophie asked, pulling the key out of the lock and throwing it roughly in any direction, causing it to clatter loudly.
Stevan, the head butler of the house, bowed his head in fear. “I'm sorry, ma'am. Mr. Leonard changed the locks on his room a few days before his return,” he said.
Sophie raised her palm in the air. “Give me the new key to this room.”
Stevan bowed his head even lower, fear evident on his face. “I'm sorry, ma'am. The master forbids you from having the key to this room.”
Sophie slapped Stevan across the face, leaving him with a stinging sensation on his skin. “Just give it to me! I'm the mistress of this house, or you're fired!” she snapped.
The click of the door opening was heard until the door behind Sophie opened from the inside by Avery, who stared in surprise at Sophie. “How rude. No wonder Mr. Leonard wants to replace you,” Avery said with an innocent look on her face.
Sophie glared sharply at Avery. “You bitch!” she screamed, suddenly pulling Avery's hair, causing the woman to almost fall forward.
Avery didn't stay silent; she pulled the woman's hair back even harder than Sophie could. Footsteps were heard from inside the room heading toward the door, where Leonard stood in the doorway wearing a bathrobe, “What's going on here?”
“More than what?” Avery asked in a soft voice, almost a whisper.Leonard didn’t answer. He just stood there, staring at the sky, as if the words were too heavy to utter.“Leonard.”“We should go inside. It’s cold.”Avery knew Leonard was changing the subject, but she didn’t press him. She just nodded, then walked into her room. Leonard followed and closed the balcony door. They stood in the middle of the room, staring at each other. Only a few steps separated them.“Avery,” said Leonard, “what will you do when all this is over?”Avery was taken aback by the unexpected question. “I don’t know. I haven’t thought about it.”“Think about it now.”Avery fell silent. She hadn’t really thought about her future or what she’d do after getting her revenge. All this time, all she’d thought about was how to free Ben, how to bring Sophie down, how to survive and return to this house.“Maybe… I’ll go far away. Take Ben with me, live in a quiet place without any ties to the past. Maybe open a small
The car pulled up in front of the hospital. Leonard turned off the engine, but didn’t get out right away. He just sat behind the wheel, staring at the building in front of him with an expression Avery couldn’t read.Avery waited a moment, then opened the door. “I’ll go first.”“Avery.”She stopped and turned around.Leonard was still staring straight ahead. “In my office later, there’s something you need to see.”“What is it?”“Later.”He got out of the car, not giving Avery a chance to ask any further questions. Avery sighed, then followed him.In Ben’s hospital roomBen had been waiting for a while. As soon as he saw Avery enter, he immediately tossed aside his sketchbook and hugged his older brother tightly.“Bro, I missed you!” he exclaimed.Avery returned the hug, kissing the top of Ben’s head, whose hair was starting to grow thick. “I missed you too.”“Yesterday you promised to play, but you didn’t.” Ben pouted, but didn’t let go of the hug.“I’m sorry, I had something to take c
“What's going on?”Leonard stopped in front of the desk. “You almost ruined everything yesterday, Avery.”“It was all out of my control. I didn't think Hardwell would make me lose my temper,” said Avery.“Still, you can’t let your emotions and fear get the better of you. That man was just a pawn hired by Sophie. You shouldn’t have been that scared, especially since last night was just a trap set by Sophie,” Leonard remarked coldly“I’m sorry, I couldn’t control myself last night. I’m sorry if that caused you trouble,” Avery said“Of course. You looked so guilty last night. Is that how you want to get back at them?” Leonard asked coldly“I’m not guilty, sir. It was Hardwell who set me up years ago,” Avery retorted“I know!” Leonard spun around quickly, taking wide strides until he stood directly in front of Avery. He leaned in, placing both hands on either side of Avery’s body, trapping her. “I know Sophie is a snake. But you… you should’ve been smarter than to walk into such an obviou
That morning, Avery slowly opened her eyes. Her head still felt heavy, but not as dizzy as the night before. Sunlight streamed in through the gap in the curtains that the maids had opened, momentarily blinding her before her eyes adjusted. She felt something pressing against her forehead, something heavy. She lifted her gaze to find a hand holding a dry cloth against her brow. She glanced down at the other hand clasped tightly around hers. Warm. She turned her head slowly to the side.Leonard was sleeping in the chair next to her bed. His head was resting on the edge of the mattress, one hand still clutching Avery’s tightly. His position looked incredibly uncomfortab le because his neck was tilted and his back was slightly hunched. But his face in sleep looked… peaceful. Not as cold as usual.Avery didn’t move a muscle. She just looked at Leonard for a moment. Memories of last night began to return bit by bit. Hartwell, the dining room, cold water, and Leonard’s voice whispering, “Yo
“How is her condition??” Leonard asked.Anna checked her temperature with a thermometer on Avery’s forehead. “Mrs. Avery’s temperature is still high, sir. The doctor said she doesn’t need to go to the hospital, but her body temperature needs to go down.”Leonard glanced at Avery. “What have you done?”“I’ve changed her clothes.” Anna hesitated for a moment. “Usually, when I have a fever, my grandmother uses a warm compress to bring it down. You could try that on Mrs. Avery to lower her body temperature.”Leonard didn’t answer. He simply walked over and sat in the chair beside the bed.Anna understood the silent command from her cold and taciturn employer. She fetched a small basin from the bathroom, filled it with warm water, then placed a clean small towel on the edge of the basin. “I’ll wait outside in case you need anything,” she said after setting the basin on the nightstand. She excused herself and stepped out, closing the door gently.Leonard glanced at the basin, then took the
“Good morning,” Sophie greeted her in a sweet tone.Avery was suspicious of the smile that suddenly appeared on Sophie’s face as she entered the dining room. She sat down in her chair without answering.Leonard was already there, reading a report on his tablet with a blank expression. Maxim and Olivia sat on the other side, looking perfectly normal. But there was an unusual tension in the air.“What’s going on this morning? Your smile looks as suspicious as a thief in broad daylight,” Avery finally asked.Sophie set her spoon down slowly, the corner of her mouth twitching as she held back her irritation. “Nothing. I was just thinking… it’s time we reminisce about the past. Get nostalgic together.”Avery raised an eyebrow. “Nostalgia?”“Of course. I invited someone who used to be close to you.” Sophie smiled again. “A professor from your old university. I forgot his name… Professor, right?”Avery froze for a moment. The spoon in her hand stopped moving.“Professor Hartwell,” Olivia sai
““Sir, the report from the surveillance team has come in.”Leonard stood by the window, letting the darkness of the night swallow him whole. The room’s lights were off. Only the moonlight filtered through the curtains, casting a long shadow on the floor. The door opened slowly. A man stood in the d
“Mr. Leonard”Their gazes locked intensely. Avery stared silently into those seemingly cold blue eyes, and so did Leonard. The ringing of Leonard’s phone—which Avery was still holding—made them break that intense eye contact. Avery cleared his throat softly to break the awkwardness. “Sorry, Mr. Leo
“So, you're accusing my wife of kidnapping my two grandchildren?”“Of course, who else could it be if not her? It's clearly visible on the security camera. Dad can't defend her anymore,” said MaximSophie, sitting on the sofa, spoke up, “That’s right. Don’t let that woman blind you. She kidnapped m
“They seem to be talking for so long, I wonder what they’re planning?” Avery looked at her tablet screen.Leonard came out of the dressing room looking sharp. “I’m heading to the office. You just do whatever you want around the house.”Avery smiled broadly and turned to Leonard. “I’d be happy to do
