LOGIN“Ouch! That hurts, what are you doing?” she screamed, clutching her bleeding arm with a pained expression.
Sophie widened her eyes, “You bitch, how dare you accuse me?”
Avery grimaced as tears slowly fell from her eyes, “She hurt me on purpose.”
Leonard stepped closer to Sophie and grabbed the woman's wrist, which was clutching a small, sharp knife. “How dare you hurt my wife,” he said coldly.
Sophie herself was shocked by the knife in her hand. She hadn't brought anything with her earlier, not even a knife. She glanced at Avery, who was still lying on the floor in a worrying position, a slight smirk appearing briefly on her lips. Sophie knew it was the woman's own doing. “No. She hurt herself, Leonard, not me.”
Leonard tightened his grip on Sophie's wrist, making her wince until the knife fell from her hand. “How can I believe you when you're openly holding a bloody knife?”
Sophie stared blankly at her husband, “I'm telling the truth, Leonard. She deliberately put the knife in my hand and hurt herself so you would accuse me.”
“Ah, Mr. Leonard, it hurts so much,” Avery whispered with teary eyes.
Leonard swung his hand and hit Sophie's face, causing her to fall to the floor in great pain. “Stevan, tell the guards to lock her in the upstairs room,” he ordered, and Stevan immediately nodded in agreement.
Stevan immediately called the large guards, who dragged Sophie away from there. “No! Leonard! You have to believe me!” she screamed in vain, even as she struggled.
Meanwhile, Leonard ignored her screams. He crouched down toward Avery and carried her like a bride, tenderly entering Leonard's room. This made Sophie even more angry and furious. “You insolent bitch! Watch out,” Sophie screamed, burning with intense jealousy.
In the hallway of the mansion, Sophie ran into Maxim, who was shocked to see his mother being dragged roughly by the big guards. “Hey, wait. How dare you treat my mother like this,” Maxim interrupted.
Sophie looked at Maxim with a hurt face. “Help me, Maxim. They're going to lock me in the upstairs room.”
One of the large men replied, “These are direct orders from Mr. Elder. You'd better move out of the way because it's useless to stop us.”
“Let my mother go or you'll be fired,” Maxim threatened.
It seemed that the large men did not care about the threat. They pushed past Maxim, causing him to fall to the floor while Sophie continued to be dragged upstairs.
Upon arriving at a room on the top floor, Sophie was roughly pushed inside, and they locked the woman in from the outside. Sophie rushed to get up to open the door, banging on it loudly, “Open the door! I said open the door!” she screamed shrill.
Footsteps could be heard moving away, indicating that the big men had left her alone in the room. She felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up and a sudden cold wind swept over her, sending shivers down her spine. She turned and leaned against the closed door, her eyes scanning the room, especially the large picture frame containing a portrait of a woman in a beautiful, long white dress with a white veil over her head. Sophie's lips trembled as cold sweat began to appear on her forehead. “No, that's not me!”
Sophie shook her head quickly, looking around warily at the warm room filled with belongings. Her eyes glanced at a portrait of a baby on the nightstand, then moved to the bed covered with white sheets. "No, it's not my fault. Leonard should have thrown all those trashy things out of here!" Sophie screamed, pushing the small table beside her, making a loud noise as it crashed to the floor with the items on it falling. After that, Sophie grabbed her own hair, accompanied by a clear cry of frustration. She didn't even dare to glance at the large portrait of a woman in the middle of the room.
Maxim was shocked by Avery's sudden appearance, especially since she had come from Leonard's private room, which was so secret that even his family members were never allowed to enter it. “Are you really married to my father?” he asked, still unable to believe any of this.
Avery tilted her head. “Have you been deaf since we broke up? Your father even announced it, didn't he?” she asked softly but sharply, deliberately showing off the diamond ring on her slender ring finger.
Maxim looked at it with eyes that still couldn't accept all this. “Have you been after my father all this time?”
Avery smiled thinly while gently stroking the diamond ring on her slender finger, “What do you think? I think you're too stupid to realize everything.”
Maxim frowned. “What do you mean?”
“I think your father is more genius than a mommy's boy like you, who can't even defend his wife and seek the truth,” Avery held back her words, she looked at Maxim with challenging eyes. “I think crying over your loss is stupid. Your father is better than you,” she continued.
Maxim grabbed Avery's injured wrist and held it tightly. “Are you planning something against me?” He stared sharply at Avery.
Avery smiled slightly with a brave expression. “If I say yes... so what?”
Maxim pulled Avery closer until their faces were inches apart, their eyes locked in a fierce stare. “You betrayed me and hurt my mother. Don't act like the victim here.”
A cynical snort escaped her lips. “Yeah, whatever. Your opinion is none of my business anymore. Believe it or not, it's your problem, not mine.”
Maxim growled angrily, “You're the one who caused my mother to be locked up in the room upstairs?”
Avery put her hand over her mouth in a playful act of surprise, “Oh, your mother is locked up? Oh, how pitiful. I thought it would be worse.”
Maxim tightened his grip on the woman's hand, “What did you do to her that made my father do that!?”
Avery heard footsteps approaching from behind her, “So you want to know?” With that playful tone, Avery suddenly began to sob with an expression of pain.
“Maxim!”
“More than what?” Avery asked in a soft voice, almost a whisper.Leonard didn’t answer. He just stood there, staring at the sky, as if the words were too heavy to utter.“Leonard.”“We should go inside. It’s cold.”Avery knew Leonard was changing the subject, but she didn’t press him. She just nodded, then walked into her room. Leonard followed and closed the balcony door. They stood in the middle of the room, staring at each other. Only a few steps separated them.“Avery,” said Leonard, “what will you do when all this is over?”Avery was taken aback by the unexpected question. “I don’t know. I haven’t thought about it.”“Think about it now.”Avery fell silent. She hadn’t really thought about her future or what she’d do after getting her revenge. All this time, all she’d thought about was how to free Ben, how to bring Sophie down, how to survive and return to this house.“Maybe… I’ll go far away. Take Ben with me, live in a quiet place without any ties to the past. Maybe open a small
The car pulled up in front of the hospital. Leonard turned off the engine, but didn’t get out right away. He just sat behind the wheel, staring at the building in front of him with an expression Avery couldn’t read.Avery waited a moment, then opened the door. “I’ll go first.”“Avery.”She stopped and turned around.Leonard was still staring straight ahead. “In my office later, there’s something you need to see.”“What is it?”“Later.”He got out of the car, not giving Avery a chance to ask any further questions. Avery sighed, then followed him.In Ben’s hospital roomBen had been waiting for a while. As soon as he saw Avery enter, he immediately tossed aside his sketchbook and hugged his older brother tightly.“Bro, I missed you!” he exclaimed.Avery returned the hug, kissing the top of Ben’s head, whose hair was starting to grow thick. “I missed you too.”“Yesterday you promised to play, but you didn’t.” Ben pouted, but didn’t let go of the hug.“I’m sorry, I had something to take c
“What's going on?”Leonard stopped in front of the desk. “You almost ruined everything yesterday, Avery.”“It was all out of my control. I didn't think Hardwell would make me lose my temper,” said Avery.“Still, you can’t let your emotions and fear get the better of you. That man was just a pawn hired by Sophie. You shouldn’t have been that scared, especially since last night was just a trap set by Sophie,” Leonard remarked coldly“I’m sorry, I couldn’t control myself last night. I’m sorry if that caused you trouble,” Avery said“Of course. You looked so guilty last night. Is that how you want to get back at them?” Leonard asked coldly“I’m not guilty, sir. It was Hardwell who set me up years ago,” Avery retorted“I know!” Leonard spun around quickly, taking wide strides until he stood directly in front of Avery. He leaned in, placing both hands on either side of Avery’s body, trapping her. “I know Sophie is a snake. But you… you should’ve been smarter than to walk into such an obviou
That morning, Avery slowly opened her eyes. Her head still felt heavy, but not as dizzy as the night before. Sunlight streamed in through the gap in the curtains that the maids had opened, momentarily blinding her before her eyes adjusted. She felt something pressing against her forehead, something heavy. She lifted her gaze to find a hand holding a dry cloth against her brow. She glanced down at the other hand clasped tightly around hers. Warm. She turned her head slowly to the side.Leonard was sleeping in the chair next to her bed. His head was resting on the edge of the mattress, one hand still clutching Avery’s tightly. His position looked incredibly uncomfortab le because his neck was tilted and his back was slightly hunched. But his face in sleep looked… peaceful. Not as cold as usual.Avery didn’t move a muscle. She just looked at Leonard for a moment. Memories of last night began to return bit by bit. Hartwell, the dining room, cold water, and Leonard’s voice whispering, “Yo
“How is her condition??” Leonard asked.Anna checked her temperature with a thermometer on Avery’s forehead. “Mrs. Avery’s temperature is still high, sir. The doctor said she doesn’t need to go to the hospital, but her body temperature needs to go down.”Leonard glanced at Avery. “What have you done?”“I’ve changed her clothes.” Anna hesitated for a moment. “Usually, when I have a fever, my grandmother uses a warm compress to bring it down. You could try that on Mrs. Avery to lower her body temperature.”Leonard didn’t answer. He simply walked over and sat in the chair beside the bed.Anna understood the silent command from her cold and taciturn employer. She fetched a small basin from the bathroom, filled it with warm water, then placed a clean small towel on the edge of the basin. “I’ll wait outside in case you need anything,” she said after setting the basin on the nightstand. She excused herself and stepped out, closing the door gently.Leonard glanced at the basin, then took the
“Good morning,” Sophie greeted her in a sweet tone.Avery was suspicious of the smile that suddenly appeared on Sophie’s face as she entered the dining room. She sat down in her chair without answering.Leonard was already there, reading a report on his tablet with a blank expression. Maxim and Olivia sat on the other side, looking perfectly normal. But there was an unusual tension in the air.“What’s going on this morning? Your smile looks as suspicious as a thief in broad daylight,” Avery finally asked.Sophie set her spoon down slowly, the corner of her mouth twitching as she held back her irritation. “Nothing. I was just thinking… it’s time we reminisce about the past. Get nostalgic together.”Avery raised an eyebrow. “Nostalgia?”“Of course. I invited someone who used to be close to you.” Sophie smiled again. “A professor from your old university. I forgot his name… Professor, right?”Avery froze for a moment. The spoon in her hand stopped moving.“Professor Hartwell,” Olivia sai
“Mr. Leonard”Their gazes locked intensely. Avery stared silently into those seemingly cold blue eyes, and so did Leonard. The ringing of Leonard’s phone—which Avery was still holding—made them break that intense eye contact. Avery cleared his throat softly to break the awkwardness. “Sorry, Mr. Leo
““Sir, the report from the surveillance team has come in.”Leonard stood by the window, letting the darkness of the night swallow him whole. The room’s lights were off. Only the moonlight filtered through the curtains, casting a long shadow on the floor. The door opened slowly. A man stood in the d
“So, you're accusing my wife of kidnapping my two grandchildren?”“Of course, who else could it be if not her? It's clearly visible on the security camera. Dad can't defend her anymore,” said MaximSophie, sitting on the sofa, spoke up, “That’s right. Don’t let that woman blind you. She kidnapped m
“They seem to be talking for so long, I wonder what they’re planning?” Avery looked at her tablet screen.Leonard came out of the dressing room looking sharp. “I’m heading to the office. You just do whatever you want around the house.”Avery smiled broadly and turned to Leonard. “I’d be happy to do
