LOGIN“Maxim!”
A hard blow struck Maxim's face, knocking him off his feet and crashing him onto the cold, hard granite floor. Blood dripped from the side of his torn, bleeding lip.
Leonard carefully examined Avery's arm. “Are you okay?”
Avery shook her head slowly, “Just a little sore from your son's grip. I guess he doesn't like me.” Avery's lips curved downward, her eyes sad.
Leonard stared at his son, who was now getting up from his position, with a sharp gaze. “Mind your manners with my wife.”
Maxim spat contemptuously to the side, “Father, are you bringing back the trash I threw away?” he asked.
Those words made Leonard no longer throw a punch at his face, but a hard kick to his son's stomach, which again made Maxim fall to the floor with pain in his stomach exceeding that in his face. “You threw away a diamond, Maxim.”
Maxim chuckled with a condescending look at Avery as if assessing a worthless object, “She betrayed your son with another man, have you forgotten?”
“So?” Leonard's tone was as flat as his expression when facing Maxim.
Maxim stepped closer to his father, “Father, are you crazy? She's my ex-wife.” He rubbed his face roughly, “What were you thinking, marrying her without any of us knowing?”
“Go inside, Avery,” Leonard asked, and the woman immediately obeyed, stepping inside Leonard's private quarters, leaving the man and Maxim behind. Leonard looked seriously at Maxim. “You, get out of my sight right now,” he ordered.
Maxim shook his head. He still hadn't resolved the issue with his father. “Father, you have to explain something.”
Leonard clicked his tongue, “You really want to cause trouble for me?”
Maxim chuckled dismissively, “You're the one causing trouble,” he retorted indignantly. “You left to take care of work for years without coming home, leaving your wife and child for almost five years without any news or proper communication. The one time you came home, you brought a new wife without warning. I'm amazed at your thinking,”
Leonard put his index finger to his lips with a soft hiss, “Be quiet, don't disturb your father and your new stepmother,” he said casually, slamming the door shut after entering his own room.
Maxim stared in disbelief, “Damn.”
Inside a luxurious room filled with expensive furnishings, a woman was lying on a long sofa with a laptop on her lap, her lips pursed to hold back laughter, her eyes narrowed as she watched a scene playing out on the digital screen. A man approached her with heavy steps, curious, “Are you laughing at that man?” he asked. The woman, Avery, immediately closed her laptop screen when the man came, “Yes, it seems so,” she chuckled, “Did you make him leave, Mr. Leonard?” she asked.
Leonard nodded, sitting on the sofa right next to Avery. “Are you hungry? We should have had dinner earlier if only my wife hadn't thrown such a tantrum,” he said with an amused tone.
“That's what you wanted, to cause a commotion in the house,” replied Avery.
“Are you satisfied with what we just did?” asked Leonard.
Avery nodded, “Of course, and that's just the beginning. I can't wait for tomorrow.”
“To recharge your energy, just tell me what you want for dinner, and the waiter will bring it right away,” said Leonard.
Avery mentioned several menu items to Leonard, who ordered from the waiter downstairs using the house phone that was directly connected to the waiter. They ate dinner together in silence, neither of them talking or even intending to start a conversation. Avery cleared his throat softly to break the silence between them. He looked up at Leonard, who was focused on the food on his own plate. He hesitated a little to start the conversation, but he had to get closer so that his mission would run smoothly. “Are you really serious about our agreement?”
Leonard then looked at Avery, his eating movement halted by the sudden question. “Of course, why do you keep asking? Don't you trust me?”
Avery shook her head quickly, “It's not that, it's just... Sophie and Maxim are your family, I don't see any strong reason for you to want to destroy something of theirs.”
Leonard put the cutlery from both hands down beside his plate and looked at Avery with serious eyes. The woman hoped she hadn't said the wrong thing to Leonard. “I have my own reasons for that. You don't need to know everything,” he said.
Avery raised an eyebrow, pausing to chew her dinner. “It's that unclear reason that makes me always wonder, are you helping me or using me, or even trapping me?”
Leonard folded his arms across his chest and stared intently at Avery with his sharp brown eyes. “Think about it, there's nothing more serious than someone hurting a family member.”
“Besides, I'm helping you with a mutually beneficial arrangement, no one will lose out,” he continued.
Avery remained silent, processing it all before speaking. “Alright, let's just say we trust each other now, as long as you don't involve my brother's health and my life in this.”
Leonard resumed eating his dinner with a relaxed expression, “Don't worry, your sister is getting the best care and I won't involve you in any heavy work, just enough to make them a little depressed.”
“I'm sure it will be easy and fun, don't worry, I'll do it so well that you won't even notice the day coming.” Avery resumed eating her dinner as well.
Leonard grabbed a glass of wine and lifted it to the center of the table, “Here's to tomorrow.”
Avery smiled slightly, took her glass of wine, and gently clinked it with Leonard's glass before they drank together.
On the other hand, Sophie was only released when the morning sun was about to rise. Her eyes were puffy and swollen like someone who hadn't slept all night because of crying and something else. She slammed the fancy vase next to her, “Damn it, they spent the night together while I was locked up all night!”Sophie walked down the hallway while her personal maid ran after her, “Ma'am, you should clean yourself up first,” she warned, remembering that Sophie hadn't showered after leaving the empty room on the top floor, still wearing yesterday's dress and smudged makeup.
Sophie glared at the couple hugging near the kitchen table, wearing matching aprons. A warm kiss on the girl's forehead made Sophie's anger boil over again. She clenched her fists and glared at them, then walked quickly towards them with hurried steps, accompanied by uncontrollable anger. “Slut!”
“More than what?” Avery asked in a soft voice, almost a whisper.Leonard didn’t answer. He just stood there, staring at the sky, as if the words were too heavy to utter.“Leonard.”“We should go inside. It’s cold.”Avery knew Leonard was changing the subject, but she didn’t press him. She just nodded, then walked into her room. Leonard followed and closed the balcony door. They stood in the middle of the room, staring at each other. Only a few steps separated them.“Avery,” said Leonard, “what will you do when all this is over?”Avery was taken aback by the unexpected question. “I don’t know. I haven’t thought about it.”“Think about it now.”Avery fell silent. She hadn’t really thought about her future or what she’d do after getting her revenge. All this time, all she’d thought about was how to free Ben, how to bring Sophie down, how to survive and return to this house.“Maybe… I’ll go far away. Take Ben with me, live in a quiet place without any ties to the past. Maybe open a small
The car pulled up in front of the hospital. Leonard turned off the engine, but didn’t get out right away. He just sat behind the wheel, staring at the building in front of him with an expression Avery couldn’t read.Avery waited a moment, then opened the door. “I’ll go first.”“Avery.”She stopped and turned around.Leonard was still staring straight ahead. “In my office later, there’s something you need to see.”“What is it?”“Later.”He got out of the car, not giving Avery a chance to ask any further questions. Avery sighed, then followed him.In Ben’s hospital roomBen had been waiting for a while. As soon as he saw Avery enter, he immediately tossed aside his sketchbook and hugged his older brother tightly.“Bro, I missed you!” he exclaimed.Avery returned the hug, kissing the top of Ben’s head, whose hair was starting to grow thick. “I missed you too.”“Yesterday you promised to play, but you didn’t.” Ben pouted, but didn’t let go of the hug.“I’m sorry, I had something to take c
“What's going on?”Leonard stopped in front of the desk. “You almost ruined everything yesterday, Avery.”“It was all out of my control. I didn't think Hardwell would make me lose my temper,” said Avery.“Still, you can’t let your emotions and fear get the better of you. That man was just a pawn hired by Sophie. You shouldn’t have been that scared, especially since last night was just a trap set by Sophie,” Leonard remarked coldly“I’m sorry, I couldn’t control myself last night. I’m sorry if that caused you trouble,” Avery said“Of course. You looked so guilty last night. Is that how you want to get back at them?” Leonard asked coldly“I’m not guilty, sir. It was Hardwell who set me up years ago,” Avery retorted“I know!” Leonard spun around quickly, taking wide strides until he stood directly in front of Avery. He leaned in, placing both hands on either side of Avery’s body, trapping her. “I know Sophie is a snake. But you… you should’ve been smarter than to walk into such an obviou
That morning, Avery slowly opened her eyes. Her head still felt heavy, but not as dizzy as the night before. Sunlight streamed in through the gap in the curtains that the maids had opened, momentarily blinding her before her eyes adjusted. She felt something pressing against her forehead, something heavy. She lifted her gaze to find a hand holding a dry cloth against her brow. She glanced down at the other hand clasped tightly around hers. Warm. She turned her head slowly to the side.Leonard was sleeping in the chair next to her bed. His head was resting on the edge of the mattress, one hand still clutching Avery’s tightly. His position looked incredibly uncomfortab le because his neck was tilted and his back was slightly hunched. But his face in sleep looked… peaceful. Not as cold as usual.Avery didn’t move a muscle. She just looked at Leonard for a moment. Memories of last night began to return bit by bit. Hartwell, the dining room, cold water, and Leonard’s voice whispering, “Yo
“How is her condition??” Leonard asked.Anna checked her temperature with a thermometer on Avery’s forehead. “Mrs. Avery’s temperature is still high, sir. The doctor said she doesn’t need to go to the hospital, but her body temperature needs to go down.”Leonard glanced at Avery. “What have you done?”“I’ve changed her clothes.” Anna hesitated for a moment. “Usually, when I have a fever, my grandmother uses a warm compress to bring it down. You could try that on Mrs. Avery to lower her body temperature.”Leonard didn’t answer. He simply walked over and sat in the chair beside the bed.Anna understood the silent command from her cold and taciturn employer. She fetched a small basin from the bathroom, filled it with warm water, then placed a clean small towel on the edge of the basin. “I’ll wait outside in case you need anything,” she said after setting the basin on the nightstand. She excused herself and stepped out, closing the door gently.Leonard glanced at the basin, then took the
“Good morning,” Sophie greeted her in a sweet tone.Avery was suspicious of the smile that suddenly appeared on Sophie’s face as she entered the dining room. She sat down in her chair without answering.Leonard was already there, reading a report on his tablet with a blank expression. Maxim and Olivia sat on the other side, looking perfectly normal. But there was an unusual tension in the air.“What’s going on this morning? Your smile looks as suspicious as a thief in broad daylight,” Avery finally asked.Sophie set her spoon down slowly, the corner of her mouth twitching as she held back her irritation. “Nothing. I was just thinking… it’s time we reminisce about the past. Get nostalgic together.”Avery raised an eyebrow. “Nostalgia?”“Of course. I invited someone who used to be close to you.” Sophie smiled again. “A professor from your old university. I forgot his name… Professor, right?”Avery froze for a moment. The spoon in her hand stopped moving.“Professor Hartwell,” Olivia sai
““Sir, the report from the surveillance team has come in.”Leonard stood by the window, letting the darkness of the night swallow him whole. The room’s lights were off. Only the moonlight filtered through the curtains, casting a long shadow on the floor. The door opened slowly. A man stood in the d
“Mr. Leonard”Their gazes locked intensely. Avery stared silently into those seemingly cold blue eyes, and so did Leonard. The ringing of Leonard’s phone—which Avery was still holding—made them break that intense eye contact. Avery cleared his throat softly to break the awkwardness. “Sorry, Mr. Leo
“So, you're accusing my wife of kidnapping my two grandchildren?”“Of course, who else could it be if not her? It's clearly visible on the security camera. Dad can't defend her anymore,” said MaximSophie, sitting on the sofa, spoke up, “That’s right. Don’t let that woman blind you. She kidnapped m
“They seem to be talking for so long, I wonder what they’re planning?” Avery looked at her tablet screen.Leonard came out of the dressing room looking sharp. “I’m heading to the office. You just do whatever you want around the house.”Avery smiled broadly and turned to Leonard. “I’d be happy to do
