LOGIN“Do you like this?” Avery stirred something in a small pot.
Leonard looked into the pot Avery was using to cook something, “I want to taste it.”
Avery took a spoonful of the soup she had made, “Here, do you want me to give you a spoonful?” she offered.
Leonard nodded, leaning forward slightly to receive the spoonful from Avery as she brought the spoon closer to his lips. The man slowly inhaled the soup and nodded gently, “You're a good cook. Would you mind if I asked you to cook for me every day?” Leonard reached for Avery's chin with his thumb, gently caressing her smooth skin.
“Of course,” Avery exclaimed.
Avery served all the food she had cooked that morning on the long dining table, accompanied by the servants who seemed to be immediately familiar with her because they had known Avery since she was Maxim's wife. No one expected her to return to this house as Elder's second wife. Avery sat next to Leonard's chair, serving food on the man's plate with unbroken eye contact since earlier.
Sophie approached quickly, reaching out to grab Avery's hair, but her hand was stopped in midair by Leonard's strong grip. “Sit down, I don't want any trouble,” he ordered, his eyes staring sharply at Sophie, making the woman's courage shrink.
Sophie looked at Leonard with teary eyes, “You haven't explained anything to me, why did you bring this person here?” she asked, pointing at Avery, who seemed indifferent to what was happening around her, chewing her food with relish, unaffected by the commotion.
The commotion clearly attracted Maxim and Olivia, who had initially wanted to have breakfast as usual in the family dining room with their two children, but the noise made them worried. Sure enough, it was coming from Sophie, who seemed to have been released from the upstairs room.
Maxim noticed that Leonard was holding Sophie's wrist. “Dad, let go of Mom's hand.”
Leonard released his grip on Sophie's wrist with a rough jerk. “You two, don't cause trouble like your mother. Now sit down and eat breakfast quietly,” he said in a commanding tone that brooked no argument.
Maxim approached Sophie and whispered softly in her ear, “Mom, this time I ask you to stay calm. Acting tough will only make you look like you've lost.”
Sophie glanced at Maxim, thinking that her son's words made sense. She sat down next to Leonard, directly opposite Avery, who smiled at her. This made Sophie clench her fists under the table.
Olivia helped her two sons and daughter climb onto chairs that were taller than them. She glanced at Maxim briefly, signaling if he needed help with their two children, but it seemed like he didn't care or was insensitive, just like when he was with Avery before. They all started breakfast in a quiet silence, only the squeaking and clinking of cutlery on plates could be heard.
“Leo, Luna. Is the food good?” Leonard asked in a friendly tone, different from his earlier demeanor.
The boy with neatly combed hair nodded along with a girl with a ponytail, “It's delicious, Grandpa,” he exclaimed.
“I think Avery's cooking is the best here, considering someone who can't even touch a Teflon handle and can't tell the difference between salt and pepper,” Leonard said between bites.
Avery smiled slightly and took Leonard's hand to hold it. “You're praising me too much today.”
Leonard brought Avery's hand close to his face to kiss it. “It's deserved because you're perfect, my wife,” he praised her, his gaze never leaving Avery's beautiful face.
Sophie, on the other hand, was boiling with anger. If this were a cartoon, you could see flames coming out of her head. Maxim glanced sideways at Avery, who was being affectionate with her father. He felt that Avery was different from how she used to be. She seemed bolder and not as foolish as when she was still in love with Maxim.
Avery leaned over to wipe Leonard's lips with her slender fingers, their eyes meeting. Sophie saw this clearly, clenching the knife and fork in her hands so tightly that her knuckles turned red. She stared at the large bowl of soup in the middle of the table, and then a terrible idea crossed her mind. She quickly got up and grabbed the large bowl of hot soup in front of Avery, who was sitting opposite her. “You bitch, how dare you seduce my husband!” she screamed.
Leonard, realizing this, pulled Avery's body toward him before the bowl could fully hit her, though there were still a few splashes of soup. The sound of shattered glass hitting the floor started the commotion. Everyone was startled and rose from their seats while Leonard focused on checking Avery's body. “Are you hurt?”
Leonard helped Avery to her feet, then turned to Sophie, who looked shocked and had just realized what she had done. Sophie stared at Leonard with wide eyes. “Leonard, I—I didn't mean to do that.”
“Not only are you useless, you're also a terrible person. I don't know why I ever chose trash like you over a diamond like Viviene,” Leonard said.
Hearing that name, Sophie froze in place. That name had been mentioned again in this house, even though she had insisted that it never be mentioned again in this house or anything related to it. “Are you comparing me to another woman?!” she asked in a loud voice.
Leonard shook his head. “No, I'm not comparing. I just want you to realize what you're doing.”
Sophie turned to look at Avery, who was clinging affectionately to Leonard's arm. That style, that hair, that outfit, everything looked just like her. She couldn't let this happen. She grabbed a knife and quickly moved towards Avery, raising the knife towards the woman's face. Fortunately, Maxim stopped her first. "Mother, stop it. Calm down, don't do anything that will endanger you," he warned.
“Let go of me, Maxim!” Sophie screamed.
Avery smiled thinly at Sophie, tightening her embrace on Leonard and whispering to him, but deliberately raising her voice so everyone could hear, “I'm scared, Leonard. I think that woman is going to kill me.”
Leonard looked at Maxim with sharply arched eyebrows, “Take care of your mother, make sure she doesn't bother my wife again or she'll suffer the consequences.” Leonard clasped Avery's hand and walked out of the room, leaving Maxim, Sophie, and Olivia behind. Maxim's children had already been taken away by their nannies when the dining room atmosphere became chaotic.
“Why did you restrain Mom? Are you defending that woman? Do you still like her?” Sophie asked repeatedly.
Maxim rubbed his face roughly, “It's not like that, Mom. I don't want anything to happen to you because you hurt Dad's new wife so openly.”
“Yes, my husband is right. Mom should think rationally like she used to,” Olivia interjected.
“I have to deal with that woman in an elegant way,” said Sophie.
Olivia approached, “I will always help you, Mother.”
Sophie stroked Olivia's hair, “You are indeed my best choice for a daughter-in-law.”
Olivia whispered softly to Sophie, “We have to start with a plan. Mum, you mustn't lose your cunning talent like you used to,” said Olivia.
“More than what?” Avery asked in a soft voice, almost a whisper.Leonard didn’t answer. He just stood there, staring at the sky, as if the words were too heavy to utter.“Leonard.”“We should go inside. It’s cold.”Avery knew Leonard was changing the subject, but she didn’t press him. She just nodded, then walked into her room. Leonard followed and closed the balcony door. They stood in the middle of the room, staring at each other. Only a few steps separated them.“Avery,” said Leonard, “what will you do when all this is over?”Avery was taken aback by the unexpected question. “I don’t know. I haven’t thought about it.”“Think about it now.”Avery fell silent. She hadn’t really thought about her future or what she’d do after getting her revenge. All this time, all she’d thought about was how to free Ben, how to bring Sophie down, how to survive and return to this house.“Maybe… I’ll go far away. Take Ben with me, live in a quiet place without any ties to the past. Maybe open a small
The car pulled up in front of the hospital. Leonard turned off the engine, but didn’t get out right away. He just sat behind the wheel, staring at the building in front of him with an expression Avery couldn’t read.Avery waited a moment, then opened the door. “I’ll go first.”“Avery.”She stopped and turned around.Leonard was still staring straight ahead. “In my office later, there’s something you need to see.”“What is it?”“Later.”He got out of the car, not giving Avery a chance to ask any further questions. Avery sighed, then followed him.In Ben’s hospital roomBen had been waiting for a while. As soon as he saw Avery enter, he immediately tossed aside his sketchbook and hugged his older brother tightly.“Bro, I missed you!” he exclaimed.Avery returned the hug, kissing the top of Ben’s head, whose hair was starting to grow thick. “I missed you too.”“Yesterday you promised to play, but you didn’t.” Ben pouted, but didn’t let go of the hug.“I’m sorry, I had something to take c
“What's going on?”Leonard stopped in front of the desk. “You almost ruined everything yesterday, Avery.”“It was all out of my control. I didn't think Hardwell would make me lose my temper,” said Avery.“Still, you can’t let your emotions and fear get the better of you. That man was just a pawn hired by Sophie. You shouldn’t have been that scared, especially since last night was just a trap set by Sophie,” Leonard remarked coldly“I’m sorry, I couldn’t control myself last night. I’m sorry if that caused you trouble,” Avery said“Of course. You looked so guilty last night. Is that how you want to get back at them?” Leonard asked coldly“I’m not guilty, sir. It was Hardwell who set me up years ago,” Avery retorted“I know!” Leonard spun around quickly, taking wide strides until he stood directly in front of Avery. He leaned in, placing both hands on either side of Avery’s body, trapping her. “I know Sophie is a snake. But you… you should’ve been smarter than to walk into such an obviou
That morning, Avery slowly opened her eyes. Her head still felt heavy, but not as dizzy as the night before. Sunlight streamed in through the gap in the curtains that the maids had opened, momentarily blinding her before her eyes adjusted. She felt something pressing against her forehead, something heavy. She lifted her gaze to find a hand holding a dry cloth against her brow. She glanced down at the other hand clasped tightly around hers. Warm. She turned her head slowly to the side.Leonard was sleeping in the chair next to her bed. His head was resting on the edge of the mattress, one hand still clutching Avery’s tightly. His position looked incredibly uncomfortab le because his neck was tilted and his back was slightly hunched. But his face in sleep looked… peaceful. Not as cold as usual.Avery didn’t move a muscle. She just looked at Leonard for a moment. Memories of last night began to return bit by bit. Hartwell, the dining room, cold water, and Leonard’s voice whispering, “Yo
“How is her condition??” Leonard asked.Anna checked her temperature with a thermometer on Avery’s forehead. “Mrs. Avery’s temperature is still high, sir. The doctor said she doesn’t need to go to the hospital, but her body temperature needs to go down.”Leonard glanced at Avery. “What have you done?”“I’ve changed her clothes.” Anna hesitated for a moment. “Usually, when I have a fever, my grandmother uses a warm compress to bring it down. You could try that on Mrs. Avery to lower her body temperature.”Leonard didn’t answer. He simply walked over and sat in the chair beside the bed.Anna understood the silent command from her cold and taciturn employer. She fetched a small basin from the bathroom, filled it with warm water, then placed a clean small towel on the edge of the basin. “I’ll wait outside in case you need anything,” she said after setting the basin on the nightstand. She excused herself and stepped out, closing the door gently.Leonard glanced at the basin, then took the
“Good morning,” Sophie greeted her in a sweet tone.Avery was suspicious of the smile that suddenly appeared on Sophie’s face as she entered the dining room. She sat down in her chair without answering.Leonard was already there, reading a report on his tablet with a blank expression. Maxim and Olivia sat on the other side, looking perfectly normal. But there was an unusual tension in the air.“What’s going on this morning? Your smile looks as suspicious as a thief in broad daylight,” Avery finally asked.Sophie set her spoon down slowly, the corner of her mouth twitching as she held back her irritation. “Nothing. I was just thinking… it’s time we reminisce about the past. Get nostalgic together.”Avery raised an eyebrow. “Nostalgia?”“Of course. I invited someone who used to be close to you.” Sophie smiled again. “A professor from your old university. I forgot his name… Professor, right?”Avery froze for a moment. The spoon in her hand stopped moving.“Professor Hartwell,” Olivia sai
““Sir, the report from the surveillance team has come in.”Leonard stood by the window, letting the darkness of the night swallow him whole. The room’s lights were off. Only the moonlight filtered through the curtains, casting a long shadow on the floor. The door opened slowly. A man stood in the d
“Mr. Leonard”Their gazes locked intensely. Avery stared silently into those seemingly cold blue eyes, and so did Leonard. The ringing of Leonard’s phone—which Avery was still holding—made them break that intense eye contact. Avery cleared his throat softly to break the awkwardness. “Sorry, Mr. Leo
“So, you're accusing my wife of kidnapping my two grandchildren?”“Of course, who else could it be if not her? It's clearly visible on the security camera. Dad can't defend her anymore,” said MaximSophie, sitting on the sofa, spoke up, “That’s right. Don’t let that woman blind you. She kidnapped m
“They seem to be talking for so long, I wonder what they’re planning?” Avery looked at her tablet screen.Leonard came out of the dressing room looking sharp. “I’m heading to the office. You just do whatever you want around the house.”Avery smiled broadly and turned to Leonard. “I’d be happy to do
