Chapter 2

Author: Foxy Whispers
While unconscious, Cassian heard a wizened voice echoing in his mind.

"I, the ancestor of the York family, traversed the world with unstoppable force. I was invincible no matter where I went. When my time was up, I left an imprint of my soul in a white sapphire bracelet, making it the family heirloom. To think that after all this time, my descendants would have fallen into such decline… What a saddening, lamentable situation this is!

"Since fate has brought us together, I shall pass down to you all the knowledge I possess. Heed these words. Once you've inherited my legacy, you must live honorably as a champion of all that is right and just. Should you tread the path of evil and fall into wickedness, you will end in ruin with no hope of redemption!"

Cassian saw the bracelet he'd given Lydia transform into a dragon and enter his chest. Exclaiming in alarm, he immediately woke up.

Looking around, he realized he was still in Lydia's rented apartment, but she and Shawn were long gone.

"That shameless couple," Cassian cursed before getting onto his feet.

Then, to his surprise, he realized he didn't feel a shred of pain at all. He didn't even have a single injury on him. He clearly remembered that he'd passed out from the agony after Shawn broke his fingers. Yet, not only were his fingers perfectly fine, but his skin looked even better than before.

What was going on?

Cassian abruptly recalled the dream from earlier.

Was it not just a dream? Was everything real?

Cassian closed his eyes, and at the very next second, he became thunderstruck. All kinds of strange and mysterious knowledge filled his mind, including information about medicine, martial arts, cultivation, divination, geomancy, and more.

He even found a book called "Compendium of Madiora Charms and Spells". It was a guide to using all of the Madiora enchantments, such as the Misfortune Hex, the Divine Speed Incantation, the Exorcism Talisman, and even the All-Seeing Eye…

There were a total of 108 different enchantments!

"What on earth is going on?" Cassian exclaimed in complete bewilderment.

Just then, the sound of his phone ringing snapped him back to reality. He pulled his phone out and saw the name of the caller, Vera Frost.

Immediately, Cassian answered the call, greeting respectfully, "Hi, Dr. Frost."

"Come back to the hospital at once. I'll be waiting for you in my office," Vera said, her crisp, cool voice sounding rather pleasant to the ears.

"Is there a reason why you're looking for me, Dr. Frost?" Cassian asked.

"How dare you be shameless enough to ask me that when you're the one who messed up?"

The call ended.

Cassian's heart sank. The tone of Vera's voice made him uneasy.

"I messed up? What did I do?" he mumbled before rushing off to the hospital.

Vera was a fair and beautiful woman with a statuesque figure. Her refined features gave her an air of sophistication. However, much like her name implied, the stoic expression on her face made her come across as cold and unapproachable all the time. Everyone at the hospital secretly called her the ice queen.

Beautiful women had no shortage of admirers. Many had tried to pursue Vera, but not a single one of them succeeded. Women were proud in some way, but Vera seemed prouder than most. But of course, she had every right to be.

Despite being fairly young, she excelled in the medical profession. She received her PhD from the Royal Medical Academy at just 23 years old.

At 24, she made a name for herself in Rivershire, and at 25, she was given special dispensation, becoming the youngest chief of surgery in the history of Rivershire Hospital. It wouldn't be remiss to say that everyone in Rivershire's medical field knew her.

But there was something else that boggled Cassian. After joining the hospital, he heard from his colleagues that many of the top hospitals in major cities like Jasperion and Sunvale had offered hefty remuneration in a bid to hire Vera, but she rejected all their offers.

Vera never gave her reason for that, and no one else knew why she turned them down. It was a mystery to all.

As soon as Cassian arrived at the hospital lobby, he saw the nurses at the information desk whispering and pointing at him. The looks of scorn and contempt on their faces were unmistakable. The uneasiness he felt intensified.

From the way they were acting, it was obvious something bad had happened, and he seemed to be in the center of it.

Cassian didn't recall making any kind of mistakes, but he couldn't dwell on that now. He rushed straight to Vera's office and knocked on the door.

"Come in," Vera said curtly.

Taking a deep breath, Cassian entered the office and saw Vera going through a patient's medical record.

"You wanted to see me, Dr. Frost?" Cassian asked softly.

Vera didn't even look up. She kept her eyes fixed on the medical record she was holding.

Cassian's heart missed a beat. He felt even more apprehensive now. Having worked beneath Vera for some time now, he had a fairly good understanding of her personality. The lack of response from her meant she was angry.

He wondered if he had truly made a mistake. Why else would she be this furious?

Yet, even after racking his brains, he couldn't recall ever messing up.

Since Vera wasn't speaking, Cassian dared not say a word either. Standing quietly in front of Vera's desk, he stole a glance at her. She was wearing a silver-white suit that complemented her svelte figure perfectly. With each breath she took, her ample bosom shifted beneath the fabric, threatening to spill from her shirt. Her black hair was piled up behind her head, leaving her beautiful face on full display.

She was the very image of a capable and cool-headed career woman.

After ignoring Cassian for five minutes, Vera finally looked up. Tossing the medical record at him, she asked icily, "Did you write this medical record?"

Cassian picked it up and skimmed through it before nodding. "I did, Dr. Frost. I wrote it this morning."

"Why is it exactly the same as the one Shawn wrote?" Vera questioned heatedly. "Tell me the truth! Why did you plagiarize the medical record Shawn did?"

"It's exactly the same? That's impossible!" Cassian hastily explained himself. "I wrote it out myself in the office just this morning. I didn't copy anyone else's work."

"You claim you wrote it yourself. Do you have any proof to back you up?"

"I do. Lydia came to the office and brought me a drink this morning. She saw me writing the medical record."

"But Lydia has already testified, saying that Shawn wrote the medical record. What else do you have to say for yourself?" Vera retorted, her expression cold as ice.

Cassian was dumbstruck, but he soon figured out what was happening. That shameless pair of cheaters wanted to set him up.

"I swear I wrote this medical record myself, Dr. Frost. I spent half the night last night looking up all sorts of medical information just to prepare it. Lydia testified on Shawn's behalf because they're—"

"Don't bother trying to explain yourself to me," Vera said, cutting him off. "The medical affairs department is aware of this. From today onward, you'll be posted to the nursing assistant station to work with them. You're not allowed to see any patients without my permission."

"But Dr. Frost, I—"

"Get out!" Vera pointed at the door, showing no leniency.

Clenching his fists, Cassian held in his anger and indignation as he stormed out of the office.

"Shawn, Lydia, just you wait. I won't let you two get away with this!"

Pomona froze mid-step, her eyes flickering with fear when she looked past Cassian.Cassian turned his head around, only to find that the newcomer was Dunley, the leader of the Tigris Order. He didn't expect to see Dunley. What was he doing here?Dunley was dressed in a robe, his long hair tied neatly in a topknot. With a short staff in one hand, he stood there looking like an otherworldly being.Gripping her cane tightly, Pomona rasped with a grim expression, "Aren't you supposed to be cultivating in isolation, you old windbag? When did you get out?""Mind your own damn business," Dunley retorted without showing any courtesy.Pomona didn't get riled up over his attitude. Pointing at Cassian, she asked, "Have you come to save him?""Did you even need to ask? Why would I be out here in the middle of nowhere if I'm not here to save him?"Pomona was taken aback. "Is he part of the Tigris Order?"Dunley shook his head. "He's not part of the Tigris Order. He's specifically my mentee

Although Cassian had been prepared for the attack, Pomona was faster than he'd anticipated. He didn't even get a chance to avoid it.Her cane smashed right against his left shoulder, and his bone split cleanly with a loud crack. Next, she kicked him in the ribs, breaking one of them as his body was launched through the air.The enraged Pomona was alarmingly strong. Cassian was no match for her at all.Was this the disparity between him and the strongest of experts? He started to feel a little disappointed. Initially, he'd thought that he was strong enough to get into the Dragonite Ranking. Who would've thought that he'd be completely helpless in this fight, without even being able to fight back? That monstrous old hag! How did she even manage to get this strong?Cassian thought it was such a shame that he hadn't fully mastered the Forging Realm, the second mastery realm of the Ninefold Divine Technique. If he had, his bones would be tougher than steel and wouldn't break so easily

While Pomona let out a shrill scream, Cassian seized this opportunity to aim a kick at her chest, which sent her flying backward. As they said, it was best to finish the job when one's enemy was down.Cassian rushed forward to end Pomona's life once and for all. Just as her body was about to land on the ground, he swung a punch at her head. But before his fist made contact with her, she used her cane to support herself and made a backflip, landing about 15 feet away.Cassian's attack didn't land.Meanwhile, Pomona finally looked down at her right hand and discovered a tiny needle-sized hole. The skin surrounding the hole was already starting to turn black. That was the sign of poison!Pomona's expression hardened. She swiftly pressed her fingers together and channeled her inner energy to her right palm. Immediately, a gash appeared on the palm. The dark, poisoned blood began flowing out.Glaring at Cassian, she snarled menacingly, "You little bastard! How dare you play a dirty

"I might agree to serve you, but you need to agree to a few conditions first," Cassian declared."What conditions?" Pomona asked."Let go of me first."Narrowing her eyes, she took one long look at him before releasing her grasp, much to his surprise."It's not like you can escape if you want to. Go on, then. What are your conditions?" Pomona asked."Let Griffin go," Cassian said."That's not happening," Pomona replied. "All of us discussed the plan and agreed from the start to kill Nino Kingsley and the Four Draconian Warlords. Griffin must die."Cassian's heart sank. True enough, the group of experts didn't spontaneously decide to ambush Nino together. They'd planned it from the beginning. This also meant that they'd come up with a very detailed plan and accounted for every possibility. He was starting to worry about Nino's safety."What other conditions do you have?" Pomona asked."Who's the mastermind behind the plot to kill Mr. Kingsley?" Cassian asked. He knew very wel

Cassian abruptly shot at Pomona. In a clash between two enemies, the braver of the two often came out victorious. This was his only shot at making it out of this fight alive. If he relied only on dodging the attacks, Pomona would always have the upper hand, and he'd be at her mercy the whole time.Pomona stopped moving when she saw Cassian coming at her. Her lips curved into a mocking smirk. "You've got a death wish, huh?"She raised her cane and swiped it at Cassian, who swiftly crouched to avoid it. Then, with a palm on the ground, he thrust his legs forward in a sweeping kick aimed right at her legs.It was a fierce move, but alas, he overlooked one thing. With her short stature, Pomona was far more agile than the average person. Just as his kick was about to land, she leaped lightly in the air, neatly avoiding it.Then, she seized this chance to bring the cane down on his head.He could already hear the sound of it swooshing in the air when it was still at least a foot above

Jorm was a big man with a thick beard. He was also emanating a murderous air."I was careless the last time, and you managed to slip away. However, you won't be getting out of here alive this time," Jorm snarled before charging at Griffin. He didn't hesitate or waste any more time talking."Bring it on!" Griffin roared as he leaped forward as well.Soon, the two men were engaged in a fierce clash. After glancing at them, Cassian felt stunned. Griffin and Jorm both moved at lightning speed. Even when he tried to focus on them, all he saw were two blurry silhouettes dashing about. He couldn't pick out the actual strikes they made. How incredulous!"Stop watching them, brat. Griffin's about to die, and I'll send you along so that you can join him in the afterlife," Pomona called."Careful, old hag, or those arrogant words of yours might bite you in the ass," Cassian mocked. "You're so old and hideous that I'm worried even the devil would turn you away at the gates of hell.""Such
