Chapter 4

Sydney's POV

"Gosh!" I cried, placing a hand on my hammering heart. "Are you trying to give me a heart attack?" This dude sure scared the bejesus out of me. I didn't see nor heard him coming over.

Gavin chuckled while I gave him an eye roll. "I'm sorry. You were deep in thought there," he said.

Typical. Trust a troublemaker to pull something immature. I rolled my eyes again and looked away."Whatever," I grumbled.

"Aww! Come on! I said I was sorry. Geez, stuck up much? No wonder Craig dumped you."

That my friend was low blow. Who the heck gave him the right to judge me? He was asking for a death wish so I snapped my head back to face him with a glare."Who the hell do you think you are to judge me?" I snarled. "Do you even know what you're saying? You don't even know me."

Held up a hand. "Whoa! I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that. Just don't bite my head off," he said looking apologetic but I just glared. "Look, I admit that was uncalled for so I'm sorry."

He set me on a tirade; my face flushed and I felt as if I were rolling head over heels down a steep hill and couldn't stop. Darn, being heartbroken sucked. With a sigh, I spoke again softly. " I'm sorry. It's just..." I paused." I feel so bad."

He smiled genuinely and I just had to blink a few times because his smile had took me off guard.

Taking in his appearance, I hadn't realized that he was good looking with a bad boy edge. Maybe it had to do with me being so caught up with Craig that's why I didn't bother to check out other guys in school. He had short tousled dark brown hair, piercing emerald green eyes with a glint that he was up to no good, slightly crooked nose indicating he had been through numerous fights and that pink luscious lips that screamed...hold it! What on earth am I thinking? I shook all of those thoughts away and focused back to reality.

"Were you checking me out?"

Darn, he caught me.

A traitorous blush crept up to my cheeks. "N-Nno. I wasn't," And that stutter would make him believe you Sydney? Real smooth.

He laughed."You're cute when you blush Syd," he chortled. "You look like a tomato."

"Yeah yeah ha ha!" I said sarcastically. "If you're here to annoy me, why don't you just go away."

Gavin attempted to retort but resisted and looked away. "Sorry," he muttered.

Silence filled after that. Strange when people define it as deafening but in reality, it was a trusted companion at times such as these-being heartbroken.

"Are you okay?"

Once again, I jumped a mile high and looked at him again. "Geez!" I cried holding the chains for support. I took a deep breath as I lowered my rapidly beating heart and answered his question"Do I look okay?" I asked dryly. "My boyfriend broke up with me for the lamest reason so I'm not okay! " I said.

My sarcasm was uncalled for but I couldn't help it.

He just smiled, clearly not offended with my tone of choice."Tell me what exactly happened. Why did he break up with you?"

I stared at the troublemaker straight in the eye. "What is it to you?" I asked. "Does it matter?"

In fact, why would he care anyway?

He shrugged. "I just want to know."

Wow, way to be vague.

I sighed and braced myself for another round of humiliation. I had a gut feeling he would laugh at the reason. "He told me I was..." I grimaced at the memory of Craig's lame words."boring." and looked away.

He surprised me by agreeing with the reason. I was expecting a chuckle or laughing his heart out but he just bluntly agreed that I was boring.

"He's right, you know."

I scowled at him. "I thought you just wanted to know the reason not to put in your two cents."

He rolled his eyes."I 'm just being honest," he said. "You're the school's teacher's pet."

That reason made me sick to my stomach. What's wrong with being studious? Was it so wrong to have a good head on my shoulders instead of acting like a life size Barbie?

"I realized that," I said, rolling my eyes."But, that wasn't a good enough excuse."

He sighed."Syd, it's okay to have good grades but," he paused as he took on a solemn look. "Guys don't like girls who are boring. If you want to keep your guy, you have to do whatever it takes to please them."

I scrunch my nose in disgust. "Like Shelly?" I shook my vehemently. " Nuh uh. I don't think so. I don't want to be a slut." He had gone cuckoo for suggesting something ludicrous and clearly repulsive.

He shook his head. "I didn't mean it like that. There are plenty of things you can do to please your man."

"Like what for example?"

He tapped his chin putting on his thinking face. "Well, " he started. " We could start with your image and personality. We could do some major overhaul if you know what I'm saying."

Overhaul? I am not some kind of vehicle that needs repairs.

I scowled. "You mean a makeover?"

He nodded excitedly. "Yes, a makeover. What do you say?"

I shook my head disagreeing. "Heck no!" but the troublemaker wasn't having it.

"Come on," he implored. " If I were in your shoes, I would get even and prove that they're wrong."

I thought about it for a while. 'A makeover,' I thought. That didn't sound bad but my parents would definitely freak out. I was content with my usual flowery dresses and baby doll shoes but, would this makeover change Craig's opinion about me being boring?

This was a big humongous decision.

I sighed. "I'll think about it."

For a moment there, the excitement in his eyes had dwindled to disappointment but covered it up with a small smile. "Okay," he said. "I understand but the offer still stands."

I stood up from my swing and glanced at him. "I have to go." A smile crept to my face as I realized that his presence somehow made me feel better. "Thanks for the company."

He smiled and nodded. "Anytime."

Gavin's POV

Poking at my food, I recounted my conversation with Sydney yesterday. I wasn't kidding when I offered a makeover. No, I wasn't. All she needed to do was grow some balls err... backbone rather and prove that she could be the fun loving type behind her intelligence.

In my opinion, the sexiest part of a female anatomy is the brain. Sure, Sydney has that quality (true that) but if she cultivated book smarts with street smarts, it would be one hell of a combination.

Shocking this may sound, It's a killer turn on.

Now where did that come from?

Sighing, I looked back up from my tray and scanned the lunch room for her. I usually sat with my buddies but they had other things to do so I was on my lonesome. Yeah, poor old Gavin.

With keen eyes, I searched for the chocolate colored haired girl and spotted her sitting near the popular table. She was staring at the loved up creepy duo, Craig and Shelly, with helplessness in her eyes as they displayed their soft version of pornography.

Geez, why would she torture herself even more? Was the humiliation not enough for her? With a growl, I stood up from my seat and strode towards her table with annoyance clearly written all over my face. I took a seat across from her and slammed my hands on the table, hard.

That got her attention.

She let out a squeak and faced me with a startled look. "God, Gavin!" she cried, clutching her chest. "Are you a ninja or something? You keep popping out of nowhere!"

"Enjoying the show?" I asked. If I wasn't so annoyed, I would have laughed at her statement but I wasn't exactly santa jolly ho ho at the moment. "Seriously, Syd. You look pathetic right now staring at Ken and Barbie over there."

Yeah, call me insensitive but the girl needed some sense knocked into her head.

She looked away and replied. "I wasn't looking."

"Oh really?" I grabbed her chin and forced her to look at me again. "Don't lie to me."

She opened her mouth to say something but unfortunately, someone had to make their presence known.

"If it isn't the nerd herself."

Pulling my hand away from Sydney's chin, I glanced up to see Shelly and Craig. Judging by the cup she was holding, I say she was up to something.

Call it a troublemaker's intuition.

Sydney sighed and replied. "What do you want, Shelly?"

Shelly cracked an evil grin, her overly applied lip glossed mouth shimmered as though she ate something oily. How could Craig stand lip locking with that icky substance?

"Oh nothing." she sang. "But I have something for you."

I shot Sydney a wary look and to my surprise, her look mirrored mine. "W-what is it?" she replied shakily, still looking at me.

Shelly's evil grin widened and without warning, she doused the contents in the cup she was holding on Sydney.

What a female dog.

"What the hell?" I roared, standing up from my seat. "You didn't have to do that!"

Shelly cackled like a maniac. "Oh yes I can." she said, the evil glint in her eye didn't go away. "She deserved it."

"Really?" I asked."What did she do to you then?" I averted my steely gaze to Craig and saw he had a blank look on his face. The douche just stood there and didn't do anything at all! Why that little...

I looked back at Sydney and saw she was dripping, her hair drenched from the liquid Shelly poured on her. She was fighting back the tears and all I wanted to do was wrap her up in a hug and tell her that everything was alright.

She looked so vulnerable.

"She's ugly and a nerd that's why."

Wow, that was lame.

I couldn't contain my anger any longer so I started to lash out at the two blond eggheads. "Listen here you--" but I was cut off by a scraping sound so I glanced back to see Sydney easing away from her seat and backed away.

"Syd?" I asked. "Where are you going?"

"I have to go," she turned around and ran out of the lunch room.

Great. Just great.

I kicked the chair behind me and went around the table to strode over the screwed up duo. I made sure to put on my most menacing face so that they would get the message. "You both are going to regret this."

Craig shot his eyebrows up, clearly shocked. "Why?"

I smirked. "You'll see."

Sydney's POV

Once again, I was holed up in the bathroom, locked inside a cubicle crying like a newborn baby. I couldn't care less if I ditch class again and much less care if someone found me in here looking all pathetic.

I thought Shelly would leave me alone now that she had Craig. She already made a point and my heart clenched when Craig, standing there watching the whole scene with blank eyes, did nothing to prevent that from happening.

I sniffed and bawled even more.

My mind drifted to Gavin's furious face. I was grateful he stood up for me though I didn't deserve his help at all. I envied his confidence and I thought, 'Why can't I have that?'

Then my thoughts flitted to his proposal.

'The offer still stands,' Gavin's words resonated ominously in my mind, taunting me to reconsider.

What if...

I shook my head. No way! No way am I getting a makeover just to spite them. It would be impossible for me to pull it off since I wasn't sexy material. Heck, I couldn't even walk properly on two inch high heels but, what if...

I groaned.

With a sigh, I stood up from the toilet seat then unlatched the lock to get out and walked to the mirror. Grimacing at my reflection, I admit the sight was totally horrifying.

My hair was sticking out in different directions and damped from the liquid Shelly poured on me, my crystal blue eyes were bloodshot, nose runny and puffy red and my dress was crumpled, in need of ironing.

I looked like crap.

Maybe Craig was right in dumping me all along. Sydney Andrews was indeed boring and uninteresting.

Sighing softly, I wiped my tears away and made a decision.

I had to find Gavin.

The final school bell sounded off  and I rushed out to look for the troublemaker by the locker area. Some students butted into me as they carelessly bustled here and there eager to be out of this prison but I continued on. He was nowhere to be found but when my eyes landed by the entrance, I thanked my lucky stars he was still here.

He was leaning on the door with his arms crossed and might I add, he didn't look too happy when he saw me.

I timidly walked towards him and cleared my throat. "Hi," I greeted.

"Hey," he replied smoothly, though I could hear the edge in his voice. "Where were you?"

"Bathroom," I said. "Hiding."

He sighed. "Syd..."

"Look," I cut him off, not wanting to hear his lecture again. "I made a decision."

His face lit up a bit. "Yeah?"

I sighed and mustered up the courage to tell him my decision and hopefully, didn't have to regret it. "I'm doing it. The makeover."

A smile crept into his face, pleased with my decision. "Are you sure? It's going to be a lot of work."

I shrugged. "What the hell. It's do or die."

He grinned and righted himself from leaning on the door to sling an arm over my shoulder. "Hell yeah!" he cheered.

I gave him a soft smile.

I'd only hoped this would work.
