Freya's POV

Freedom was so close I could taste it.

But as I was running, I felt it — a presence, a shift in the air. Something, someone was here.

Ahead stood a figure, eyes glowing red with crimson and bloodlust. My heart leapt to my throat and my brain screamed at me to stop and turn back.

Turn back. Turn back.

Freya, turn back!

But I didn't.

I loomed near and my stomach dropped.

No. No, no, no.

“You’re leaving?” Xaden said, his muscular body blocking my path.

His menacing, red eyes locked onto mine, unreadable. His shirt was torn, a streak of blood was smeared across his face and I stared. None of it was his own. I'm sure.

He took another step and I instinctively reeled back. He probably sensed my fear and took another step back. And for the first time in my life, when I looked at him, I didn't see arrogance, not cruelty or rage. His gaze had melted into something softer, something different. It was something I had never noticed before.

“You were going to leave,” he said quietly.

“I…” he held mine and I couldn't speak. But he took a step closer and finally spoke. “Yes. I was leaving.”

A flicker of something crossed his face. Regret? Amusement? I couldn't tell which.

He sighed and raked his hand through his hair. “You really don't know how to make things easy, do you?”

I stiffened. Was he trying to stop me? Was he going to kill me?

He ran his gaze all over me from head to toe and arched a brow. “You don't even have a weapon.”

“Doesn't mean I won't try.” Those words left my lips before I could stop them.

He let out a short laugh, the sound almost genuine. “Gods, I never knew you were this stubborn.”

“I’m surprised as well.” I said with a small smile.

Suddenly, his amusement faded and was replaced by something far more dangerous. “Freya, I'm sorry but you can't leave.”

I should've been scared out of my mind. I should've been terrified but I wasn't.

“I can't leave?” I took a step forward, his face a few inches from mine. “Watch me.”

I turned on my heels and ran, but before I could take a step, he moved. And he was fast.

Too fast.

His strong hand gripped my wrist, yanking me back and I struggled.

“Let me go!” I screamed, fighting to get free but he was stronger. Far stronger.

“Xaden…” I hissed, my breath coming in ragged gasps. “Let. Me. Go.”

“I can't.” He murmured.

My face was drained of colour. “Why not?”

His grip around my wrist tightened, his expression unreadable.

“Because,” he said softly, “I think we're on the same side.”

My stomach flipped. What?

Before I could get an answer, the world tilted as something hard slammed into the back of my head. Sharp pain exploded through my skull and my body slumped to the floor.

The last thing I saw before the world went dark was Xaden’s expression. It was unreadable but he knew what lies beneath those red glowing eyes — pure, seething rage.

Falling only meant one thing : Death.

The wind roared in my ears and my stomach plummeted as darkness swallowed me whole. Xaden's grip on me was unyielding, his arm locked around my waist as we plunged towards the icy depths below.

Then — impact.

Cold.

Bone crushing.

A force so violent it knocks the very air out of my lungs.

Water closed over my head, its chilling embrace sending shock waves around every nerve in my body. I fought against it, my limbs sluggish, the weight of exhaustion and pain dragging me down.

Swim.

The instinct burned through me. My legs kicked, my arms flailed, but the current was too strong. It pulled at like with invisible hands, whispering promises of silence and darkness, and promising an end to life.

No.

I forced my body to move, breaking the surface with a gasp.

Air burnt my throat as I wheezed, coughing and sucking desperate breaths. The world spun. I barely managed to keep my head above water.

Xaden.

Panic sliced through me. “Where is he?”

Before I could search, another wave crashed over me, sending me spiraling back into the icy waves. My body hit something solid and pain exploded in my leg and then everything went black.

I woke up to a deep, throbbing ache.

It radiated from my right leg, the leg I had hit on the rock upon impact, a reminder of the brutal fall. My body felt like it had been trampled by a thousand stampeding wolves, every muscle in my body screaming in protest as I shifted with an aching groin.

The ground beneath me was damp, like something covered in a thick layer of moss. Faint light trickled through the trees overhead, painting the world in dull shades of green and gray.

Where the hell was I?

A sharp scent curled around me, cutting through the damp earth and fresh rain. It was intoxicating — rich, warm, lavender and wildberries.

My breath hitched.

Lavender and wildberries?

My wolf, the part of me that I hadn't felt in years, suddenly stirred.

Oh my God's.

A violent shudder ran through me. My pulse pounding as my senses sharpened, my entire being had been locked onto the scent like a predator hunting its prey.

I inhaled softly. Lavender and wildberries?

Panic flared in my chest and I scrambled to my feet. I tried to stand but the pain seared through me, sending me crashing back down with a strangled curse.

“Son of a bitch.” I curse, sucking in deep breaths.

I needed to move. I needed to see the mate my wolf had been howling over.

The scent pulled at me, irresistible and maddening. I linked forward, my heart hammering in my chest.

I pushed through the dense foliage, my fingers brushing against damp leaves, wanting to see who my mate was.

I trudged into the clearing and then —

I saw him.

Xaden.

He laid immobile a few feet away, his body sprawled on the forest floor.

His shirt was torn, revealing the hard lines of his chest, smeared with dirt and blood. But blood wasn't the only scent wafting in the crispy air. There was something else.

An oddly familiar wrapped around me like the air did.

That scent — His scent — struck me in the lungs and I froze in shock.

“No,” I shook my head. “No. This couldn't be happening.”

I forced myself closer, telling myself I had hit my head harder than I thought.  My heart pounded so loudly it drowned out the rustling leaves, the distant chirping of birds.

The scent of lavender and wildberries mingled with blood thickened as I got closer.

It took one second to realize the scent was coming from him.

Freya's Pov Hold up. This woman looks so familiar. Have I perhaps seen her somewhere before?I squinted my eyes and looked inwardly, trying to remember where I had seen her and if we had a conversation or something. But in the blink of an eye, I recalled where I saw her and what encounter we both had. She was the granny I saw at Nina’s company who kept on complaining about her pictures. My eyes widened in shock. Who would have ever known that she was the one who took care of Xaden’s look alike at his lowest point? But then, we didn't actually form a bond right there and there was nothing we talked about except for the fact that she thanked me for her photos.Even as she stared at me, she still looked strict. I can't tell if she remembers me or not and that's only making me feel really nervous.“Goodness.” I said under my breath shakily as I watched her join us in the living room and take her seat.Hopefully that things go well during my time with her right here. I wouldn't want anyth

Freya's Pov “Who are we to see and why do I have to be careful?” I asked him out of curiosity.“Well, that's because… Look, she is a granny right now and she played the role of a mother to the man I'm imposing, and did all she could do for me back then when he was younger. She was there for him in every way that he needed someone to be there, kind of.”“I don't understand. You are clearly different from the person you're talking about.”“Yeah, that's what I thought until I made my findings. We do look alike, so that's an advantage, and also, who knows, she might have an idea of where the shining gem could be. We just need to take things slowly and let the acting be perfect.”“Okay then…” I urged him to continue.“So, she's back in New York City and she wants to see you and me. You know that she has definitely gotten the hang of the so-called marriage. She just doesn't know that it's not, you know, real between us.” “Oh, I understand. That's great. But why do you look a little weird

Freya's Pov For the past few days, my health has been a little discomforting. I came down with a cold and it didn't seem to go away quickly even with the medicine that was provided. We had gotten a temporary home because we still had to get our eyes peeled for the shining gem as that was the main reason for coming here. It would be really weird to go back with nothing since George who we were thinking might show us, was now in prison.I wrapped myself with my thick bed covers and sniffled as I reached out for my phone to check out what was going on on the internet and that's when I heard my room door open.“Hey, you're awake already.” Xaden said with a smile on his face.He was holding a tray with a glass of water and medicine.“Yes.” I replied and adjusted myself on the bed. When he got close to me, he sat at the edge of the bed and placed the tray on the bedside desk.“How are you feeling this morning?” He asked me and placed his palm on my forehead.“I'm a little better. At least,

Freya's Pov Xaden was running towards us and the look on George's face said a lot about his shock. He didn't expect that Xaden would find us.“Shit!” He cursed out loud and released me.As he released me in the deep, strong water, I yelled out to him.“Hey!” I yelled out as he was the only one who could hear me quickly. But he didn't care enough to look back at me. The current was beginning to sweep my body away and I shrieked, trying to swim away and get to shore, but it was proving difficult to do that especially as the force of the water was really strong.“Help me!” I yelled out in fear, but Xaden had not gotten close enough to hear my light voice. “Shit!” I cursed boldly as I continued to try swimming fast and strong. What if the current becomes more forceful and makes the water sweep me away swiftly and moves me far from reach? What if I got to the middle of the water, and a big sea creature jumps up and eats me up? George's wish of death for me would be fulfilled immediately t

Freya's Pov My eyes widened and almost popped out due to the shock I felt. I blinked my eyes to be certain that I was seeing the right person and the same face was still before me.“Is this truly George?” The words trailed off my tongue because it was a little difficult to believe. He had a smirk on and my heart continued to beat fast and faster like it was going to explode any minute from now as it seemed like he truly was George. So, when he had told me that he understood the fact that we were married, he didn't have it in mind to back out.All he wanted was to get Xaden to himself and seeing as he had already said he was going to get rid of me, he probably meant death.“Please. Please don't kill me.” I pleaded with so much fear in my heart. My legs were feeling wobbly and I also felt doomed that I had met my end already.“There's no way I'm letting you go since you've been proving stubborn.” George uttered devilishly.“Please.” I pleaded with a shaky voice as tears filled my eyes

  • Mated To My Bully: Alpha’s Fated Love    Chapter 65

Freya's Pov I put my phone under my belly and closed my eyes, pretending to sleep. At least, If I didn't click on the message, the blackmailer won't know that I have seen his message or that I'm not asleep.I opened my eyes again and my eyeballs kept drifting left and right as I scanned the room as well. Even as I had not checked the message, I felt disturbed about it. What if he could see me or he knew that I wasn't asleep?Just then, I sat up and sighed in frustration. I picked up my phone again and opened the text. I let out a sigh and smacked my lips. “Alright, where?” I sent a text, and stared at the phone intensely.“The back of this hotel.” He informed me.Regardless of how scared and terrified I might be right now, it's just best for me to step out to avoid more troubles. Besides, nothing can happen to me. Freya, you can do this. Don't be scared.I slowly got down from the bed without making any noise as I didn't want Xaden to wake up from that. I reached for my jacket which
