SIERRA

I felt the weight of frustration press down on me like a boulder. Every time I tried to approach the barrier, a shockwave would blast me back, and each time it happened, the sting felt sharper. My body still hummed with the last hit, and my mind was clouded with doubt. I didn’t know what to do, what to try next. Nothing I had attempted had worked so far.

I crossed my arms tightly over my chest, staring at the shimmering line in the air that separated us from the cave. Ariel stood there, her expression smug and bored, watching us like we were nothing more than an amusing spectacle. But inside, I was a mess. I hated feeling helpless. I hated being powerless when someone I loved, my sister was so close but just out of reach.

“None of us can get close,” I muttered under my breath, mostly to myself. “This barrier is too strong.”

Dane spoke up, his voice quiet but steady. “What if we turn the tables? What if we trap Ariel instead?”

I blinked at him, not understanding at first. “Trap

THANEI walked into the school office with Maya beside me.She looked exhausted. Her eyes were swollen and red from crying all night. Her hair was pulled back into a messy bun, and she wore one of my jackets because she had been too distracted to pick out her own. She hadn’t slept. Neither had I.The fluorescent lights overhead buzzed softly. The office smelled like paper and floor polish, and the ticking clock on the wall was louder than it should’ve been. Everything felt… tense. Like the walls themselves knew something was wrong.A woman at the front desk looked up quickly when she saw us. She was in her late forties, with glasses that hung low on her nose and a nervous smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.“Mr. Thane?” she asked.“Yes,” I said with a short nod. “We were called in.”She straightened in her seat, quickly shuffling some papers on her desk like she didn’t know what to do with her hands. “Yes, of course. Please, right this way. The principal is waiting for you.”Maya

SIERRAIt was all fake. The walls, the hallway, the torches… even Zane.Gone.I stood in the middle of that cold, empty room, staring at the chains on the ground.I whispered, “There was never a castle.”Everything shimmered around me.And then it disappeared. The walls melted into air. The floor beneath me turned back into dirt. I was outside. In the woods.I stumbled back in shock. There was no building. No room.No real anything.A trap. From the start.“Sierra!”My head whipped around at the sound of my name.I saw her.Ariel.And beside her, in a glowing cage made of bright, swirling magic, was…“Lila!” I shouted. She looked up at me. Her eyes wide. Scared.“Let her go!” I screamed. “She has nothing to do with this!”Ariel laughed. Loud. Cruel. “Oh, you poor thing. Still so heroic.”“Please,” I begged. “She’s not part of this. She didn’t ask for any of it!”“Oh, but she did,” Ariel said, smirking. “You think you’re the only one with power? Your little sister is gifted too. I want

SIERRAWe crouched low behind the tall stone wall, our backs pressed against it as we listened. The night was quiet, but not silent. There were footsteps, murmurs, and that sharp clicking sound from one of the guards’ boots. Then we heard her.Ariel.Her voice sent chills down my spine, smooth and cold like ice.“They’ll come,” she said, her tone full of confidence. “The boys and Sierra. I know it.”Lila’s eyes widened beside me, but neither of us moved.“They’ll come for him,” Ariel went on. “And when they do, you will grab them. No mercy. No mistakes.”“Yes, ma’am,” the guards answered.“Keep a close watch. The minute you sense something strange, alert me. Don’t wait. Don’t assume. I want to catch them the moment they step near.”We waited until her footsteps faded away.I let out a shaky breath. “Did you hear that?”Lila nodded. “She wants us to come.”“But we don’t have a choice,” I whispered. “Zane’s here. We can’t leave him.”“I know,” she said. “But we’ll have to be smart.”I p

THANEMaya was crying again.Same spot on the couch. Same sweater in her arms. Sierra’s sweater.I sat beside her and wrapped my arm around her, but she didn’t even look at me. Her eyes were swollen, red. Her body was trembling.“I don’t know how much more of this I can take,” she whispered.I rubbed her shoulder. “We’ll get them back, Maya. I promise you. Somehow.”“You’ve been saying that for days,” she said, her voice flat. “But nothing’s happening. Nothing’s changing.”“I’m trying…”“Well try harder!” she snapped, then broke into tears again. “I just want my girls back. I want Zane back. I want our family whole again.”I didn’t say anything else. I just held her tighter. But my heart was breaking too. After some time, I stood up and kissed the top of her head.“I’ll be back soon.”“Where are you going?” she asked, looking up, panicked.“Just to get some air.”She nodded slowly. But I wasn’t going to get air.I walked far, into the woods, away from the noise, away from everything.

KANEI hated every second of it.School.The classrooms, the teachers, the ringing bells, the smell of sweaty lockers, it all felt pointless now. Like a bad joke. Like the world was burning, but we were stuck here pretending everything was normal.I glanced at Dane beside me. He was tapping his pen nonstop on the desk. Tap. Tap. Tap.“Stop,” I muttered. He stopped tapping but didn’t look at me. “I can’t sit here anymore, Kane.”“Me neither.”“How are we supposed to focus when Sierra, Lila, and Zane are out there somewhere? We don’t even know if they’re okay.”“They’re okay,” I said. “They have to be.”Dane turned his head toward me. “So what do we do? Just sit here all day listening to Mr. Evans talk about algebra?”I shook my head. “No. We don’t sit. We move.”His eyes lit up. “You mean… sneak out?”I nodded. “We have to find something. A clue. Anything. The veil has to leave behind traces of magic, right?”“Right,” Dane said quickly. “So we just… slip out during the next period?”“E

MAYAI couldn’t stop crying. My chest aches so badly I thought it might break in half. The pain wasn’t just in my heart, it was everywhere. In my bones. In my skin. Even in my breath.I sat on the couch, clutching Sierra’s favorite sweater like it could somehow bring her back. It still smelled like her, faintly like vanilla and the strawberry lotion she always used. I pressed it to my face, but it only made the tears fall harder. My face was soaked, my cheeks red and raw from wiping them too much. My hair was a tangled mess. I hadn’t looked in a mirror in days. I didn’t care. I couldn’t care.My voice was almost gone, hoarse from screaming into the night, crying out their names, begging for them to come home, for any of them to come home.Thane knelt down in front of me. I didn’t even hear him walk in. He gently took my hands in his, his eyes full of worry and sadness.“Maya…” he said softly, his thumbs rubbing circles on my cold hands. “Please. You need to eat something.”I barely sh
