ZANE

“Sierra,” I whispered, brushing her hair from her face. “Please wake up.”

Her skin burned beneath my touch, hot with fever. Too hot. Her chest barely moved, like even breathing had become a fight. Panic clawed at my throat.

I sat on the edge of the bed and gripped her hand tightly. It felt limp in mine, lifeless. “Sierra, come on,” I said again, voice cracking. “Say something. Anything.”

The silence around us thickened. The air was still, holding its breath like I was. I wanted to scream, to shake her awake, to demand the universe give her back.

Then…suddenly… her eyes flew open.

She gasped, sucking in air like someone had punched the wind out of her lungs. Her entire body jolted beneath the sheets. I stumbled back and then surged forward.

“Hey!” I jumped to my feet. Relief crashed over me like a tidal wave. “You’re awake! You’re okay!”

But something was wrong.

She didn’t look at me. Her eyes were glassy and wide, like she was seeing something I couldn’t. Her chest heaved, and he

LILAI don’t know why my feet started moving.I didn’t plan it. I didn’t think about it.One minute, I was just standing by the back door of the house, half-listening to the muffled voices inside. The next, I was walking, slowly, quietly, toward the lake behind it.“Lila?” I heard Mom calling from the kitchen. “Where are you going?”I didn’t answer. I couldn’t.It was like something had taken over me. Not in a scary way. It didn’t feel heavy or dark. It felt… gentle. Warm. Stronger than me, but not in a way that made me fight it. It was like being pulled by a string tied to my heart. Like the lake had whispered, and my soul heard it.The breeze brushed against my skin like a hush, like nature itself was holding its breath. The tall grass tickled my bare ankles. The sun was barely up, casting a soft golden glow over everything, but the lake… the lake looked unreal. Still. Shining like glass. It wasn’t moving at all, like time had frozen on its surface.I reached the edge and stared int

DANEI was so tired and decided to take a rest. I left Sierra’s side after tucking her in properly. I walked out and saw something strange. I rubbed my eyes, thinking maybe I was just tired. But when I looked again, they were still there.People. All around the town. Standing still. Watching me.Their eyes glowed red like hot coals. Their faces were empty. No expression. Just… staring.I stepped back from the bakery door. “What the hell…”“Dane?”I turned. Lila stood behind me, holding her bread. She looked normal. No red eyes.“Did you see that?” I asked, pointing toward the street.“See what?”“The man standing there. He was just… there. Watching.”She frowned and turned to look. “There’s no one there.”“He was. Just a second ago.”“Are you okay?” she asked, her voice cautious now.“I… I don’t know,” I muttered. “He was right there. And he wasn’t the only one. I saw more of them. At the edge of the market. Near the fountain.”She took a small step back. “Maybe you should get some re

KANEI stepped into Sierra’s room and closed the door behind me. It was quiet. Too quiet. No laughter. No talking. No life. Just her, lying there, still as ever.Zane sat beside her. He hadn’t moved much since we got her back. He looked like he hadn’t slept either."Hey," I said softly. He glanced at me, his eyes red. "Hey."I walked over and stood at the foot of the bed. Her skin was glowing faintly under the bandages. I didn’t know if that was good or bad anymore."She looks worse," I said."She’s holding on," Zane replied. "Barely."I sat down in the chair next to him and rubbed my face, fingers dragging down like they could scrape the frustration out of my skin. “I feel useless.”He didn’t say anything, so I kept talking, because if I didn’t, I’d scream.“I’m supposed to be strong, right? But when it mattered, all I could do was break the veil. I couldn’t protect her. I couldn’t stop what happened.”Zane finally turned to me, his eyes tired but steady. “You think she’d be alive ri

LILAI sat by Sierra’s bed, my eyes fixed on her face. She looked peaceful, but it was the kind of peace that didn’t feel right. Her chest rose and fell, yes, but the rhythm was slow. Too slow. Like her body was breathing out of habit and not because her soul was still tethered to it.The room was dim, lit only by a small lamp in the corner. The shadows on the walls moved slightly every time the breeze touched the curtains. I reached for her hand and wrapped mine around it gently. It was warm, but not as warm as it used to be. And she didn’t squeeze back.“She’s not waking up,” I whispered, my throat tight. From the doorway, I heard Mom’s voice, soft, but not as comforting as usual.“She will,” she said, stepping in. “She’s just resting.”I shook my head slowly, never taking my eyes off Sierra.“No. She’s not just resting.”Mom came closer and sat beside me. She glanced down at Sierra too, her lips pressed into a thin line. I could see the worry in her eyes, even if she was trying to

MAYAWe stumbled out of the veil.Zane was carrying Sierra in his arms. Her head rested on his chest. Her skin looked pale, too pale. Her lips were dry and colorless. I couldn’t even hear her breathe.Lila was behind them. She wasn’t crying. She wasn’t talking. She looked lost. Her steps were slow and shaky. She limped like she didn’t feel her legs anymore. My heart stopped.“Oh my God!” I screamed, running toward them. “My babies!”I dropped to my knees right in front of Lila and pulled her into my arms. I kissed her face again and again. Her cheeks were cold and sticky with dried tears and dirt.“You’re here,” I said in a rush, my voice shaking. “You’re okay. You’re safe. Thank God. Thank God!”“Mom…” Lila whispered and hugged me weakly. Her arms barely wrapped around me. “We made it.”Then my eyes moved to Sierra.“Sierra?” I whispered, crawling quickly toward Zane. “Let me see her.”Zane nodded and gently lowered her down onto the grass so I could get closer. I leaned in fast, bru
