Grayclaw Ridge is a cesspool of debauchery. A werewolf city where those who want people to turn a blind eye do. The crime in this city is unlike any other and I have been summoned to do one of my favourite jobs. Tracking down a lowly human slave who has run off with a ruby ring of her master. Tut tut.
I tuck my hood up, walking down the cobbled narrow streets as the rain pours relentlessly. I have nothing but a picture of the girl in question. A frail looking red head no doubt starved and beaten by her master. It’s hardly a wonder why she stole from him, not that I care. I will be paid for my services with the bonus of hearing her scream and begging for mercy. I feel my blood zing at the thrill of it.
I turn down another lane, one where the wretched layout on the street begging for anything money, food in exchange for the only product they can give. Their bodies. I suspect my conquest will be down here, no doubt lying low. I smirk, my fingers itching to touch her skin, feel the beat of her pulse quicken before I begin her punishment.
I see a pair of striking blue eyes lock onto mine, freezing momentarily before the girl takes off down the street, knocking into various passers-by looking for their nightly conquest. “Watch it!” a gruff man cries as he pays a woman, lowering his trousers for her. The woman looks close to death. I guess this will be her last meal. I see a flash of red and charge after her. I know it is the girl I am looking for. Why else would she run from me?
I chase after her with ease but slow my pace, wanting to give her a slither of hope that maybe just maybe she might just escape. It’s just so much more thrilling seeing that spark fade from their eyes when they believe they have finally evaded me. Still, tonight I’m not in the mood for a long chase. Tonight, I want this over with.
She turns the corner, disappearing from sight and I use a cut through in the wall to catch up with her. In the shadows I hide as she scans the deserted warehouse, checking to see if I have followed the poor little love. If only she knew how close I truly was. I see her let out that precious sigh of relief. Her shoulders relax and a glimmer of a smile appears on her face before I snap my fingers on the match. The flicker of a flame appears in the shadows. I watch as the little colour in her cheeks fades and her eyes bulge.
“Please don’t do this. He was a monster. I just needed some money to escape. You have no idea how he treated me,” she begs, staring into the dark as tears stream down her face. It’s probably true. After all, everyone knows why a werewolf would want a human slave. Still, her fear feasters into all areas of the room as she gasps for breath, only sealing her fate and my enjoyment.
I step out from the shadows as she trembles before me. She is a tiny thing. This won’t take long at all. I can already hear her heart thundering in her chest. I tilt my head to the side as the match burns out, her breath clouding the air before I relight it again, inches from her face. “Please,” she whispers, her throat closing up as she begs one last time.
I look at her deep blue eyes as she trembles some more, dropping the match to the floor as I grab hold of her shoulders, trapping her in place. My nose itches when I smell the scent of her wee permeates the air. “I won’t make this quick. I like hearing screams,” I whisper menacingly as the flames begin to engulf around us. The fire catches hold of both of us as her first shriek sounds. She tries to fight her way out but is unable to. The pain is already too much for her frail body to bear.
The stench of burning flesh fills the air and I laugh, inhaling deeply as she lets out one final shriek before her body goes unconscious, the flames licking up her arms. I snicker, her red hair blending with the fire that consumes her. I drop her to the ground, checking her pocket for the ruby ring she stole. It is indeed beautiful as I pocket it, walking out of the fire as the flames consume her.
Elio I sat mesmerised by the flickering flames of the fire, transfixed as the next log began to burn. There is something truly hypnotic about watching a fire. Suddenly, a cloud of smoke caught my attention, followed by a brief glimpse of a pair of piercing emerald eyes. I leaned back in my comfortable leather armchair, absentmindedly rubbing my chin, only to realise that I had nearly forgotten about my future bride-to-be. Her family had begged for her to have a year to find her mate. Not that I give a shit, but there was something about the girl that intrigued me I indulged them. Not that it would have made a difference if she found her mate or not. I would have taken her, anyway. Her thistle of a father had nothing but blackmail and debts to offer me as a trade. I nearly killed him for making a deal he couldn’t repay when he offered his daughter like a sacrificial lamb for me. I made him sign a blood oath so there was no possibility of him being able to back out. His daughter dis
Elio I headed back to my room feeling tired. I needed to make the trip to the Silvermoon pack. It was roughly three hours’ drive away. Even so, I would have preferred someone else to make the journey. I had met my bride-to-be on one occasion. It’s another reason I followed through on the deal. She intrigued me. My wolf also seemed to take an interest in her. Not unusual, but still I was surprised, as she didn’t fit my normal type. I had always wanted a strong alpha female to be by my side, not some … omega. No matter what my brother says, it works for him perfectly, but not me. I had plans. I was due to secure two new packs under me. I needed a luna who had a strong stomach and could handle the type of work I do. (Flashback) I had received an invitation to some alpha and luna’s ceremony, odd considering we didn’t really do that type of thing. The only time I helped out another alpha was to take over his pack. Still, my wolf was rather insistent that I attend. Perhaps it was devil
Kara The air was sucked out of the room. All I could hear was the pounding of my heart and Caleb’s footsteps as he approached the door. Goddess, I don’t know if I can survive through this again? I know what it is like to be free. How can I go back to being cadged? I can’t. I feel the urge to run but I’m sat frozen on the spot. I feel something brush my arm, a shiver trickling down my spine. I can’t take my eyes off the door. Thud thud thud, tick tock, tick tock. The last few sands fall from the hourglass as Caleb opens the door. In walks a man I have seen before, his dangerous aura blasting around him, and I see everyone else flinching. I can feel it, but I don’t know why it doesn’t affect me like everyone else. Is it because my wolf is wild and doesn’t like to bow down to authority? Two other men flank him; one looks similar to him with the same dangerous vibe, shorter than he is but wider as he seems to have muscles on top of muscles. The next guy behind him looks familiar and I t
Kara I calmly head upstairs. Guess my plan to escape out the window is now useless. Still, I’m sure there is a way around it. I don’t know what this blood oath means, but surely there is some … wiggle room? I hear his heavy feet climb the stairs behind me. When I look back over my shoulder, all my family and his men are waiting at the bottom. They all stare up at us, making me bite my lip. This is not how I imagined my family reacting to my betrothed, but then again, I never pictured anything like this. I keep the package hidden just about in my jeans pocket. It barely fits, and if it wasn’t for the baggy knit jumper I was wearing, I have no idea how I was going to hide it. I also didn’t need Elio watching me. I’m sure he would be suspicious of what’s inside. For that reason, he can’t catch me with it. When we reach my bedroom, I step in, going to close the door on him when his foot wedges the door open. “I told you we need to chat, little wolf,” his tone is commanding as he pushe
Kara After three long brooding hours, we were finally getting close to the Crimson Moon Pack. I had never seen anything like it. The size of the pack was bigger than some of the human cities I had visited. It was incredibly cold, the dark starry sky shone like diamonds against the black canvas. I could just make out the shape of the huge tan wall that acted as a barricade surrounding the entire city. The place was a fortress. As we drove over the sand dunes, I wondered how I would survive the heat here. It’s unusual for wolves to pick a place where there are little to no trees or plants as far as the eye can see. Despite its desert state, it was rather beautiful. There were towers and turrets everywhere I could see. How did they all survive this heat? No wonder Elio was powerful. Who would challenge him when the elements are this fierce? I was feeling weak from lack of food and drink. Was he really going to starve me? Didn’t he need to eat or drink to survive? I glanced up at him,
KaraHis brother comes up, pulling his shoulder to release me as I gag for air. Elio takes a few steps back and I can see the two of them are mind linking. My lower lip trembles as I snap my eyes shut. How could I have been so stupid? I know what I need to do to survive. Why would I risk my life? His threat circles in my head about not being his wife over and over. I take another breath. I need to play this smart. Being his wife comes with security, respect so many advantages I would have. If I lose that, what will become of me? He won’t just lock me up and throw away the key, not if his tone is anything to go by. He will choose something to punish me, humiliate me. Then, when I crave death, he will find some other torment. No Kara, you can do this. I chant as I force my wolf back, the oxygen recirculating my body, making it easier to control her. When I look up at both of them, they are both staring at me. “This is my brother, Cahya. He is the beta of this pack. I have also told him
KaraI close the door to my bedroom. Goddess, it is five times the size of mine back home. I turn, seeing a little peephole through the door and sure enough, Marquis is still waiting outside. I need to calm down … perhaps a bath and some food will help. It’s hard to feel trapped when I can do cartwheels across the floor. I have never seen a room so big. There is a huge king size bed that I will drown in. it has its own curtain around the top of the bed frame. One wall is all arches with a view of the entire city. There is a walk-in wardrobe that I will use one shelf of with all the clothes I packed. Not that it matters, as the wardrobe is stocked with dresses, shoes, trousers, tops, jumpers, jackets. Anything I could ever want or need for my lifetime of servitude. Wonderful.I refuse to linger there too long. If I do, I will probably find ways for my mind to trick me into thinking he bought all these items for me. That he took the care to choose what I would wear. But I doubt it. It
Kara Despite the dark, damp smell that is coming from the twisted corridor, I decided to take a step. If they don’t know this corridor is here, perhaps … This could lead to me getting out of the castle. Then what I don’t know, but curiosity got the better of me, so I carried on all the same. I had only ever read one book when I was younger. It was a about 12 princesses who lived in a castle and would escape to dance all night with their prince. I wonder if this would lead me to my prince? The uneven steps made it tricky to manoeuvre down the further I went the light from my room began to disappear. Not that it mattered as a werewolf I can see easily in the dark, but there is something comforting about light. The sound of water dripping on some of the steps echoed through the air, making them slippery to walk on. Where does this lead? Once I was completely submerged in the darkness, there was a fork in my path, left, or right? This was a little tricky, as now I wasn’t sure where to
