CHAPTER 25: The Gift

|| David Calisto’s POV ||

“You knew about my heir before half my own elders had sobered up, Eldwyn, and you rode through my gates a full day before you promised. So before you pour yourself any more of my wine, you’ll tell me how.”

I didn’t bother to sit down. I stood behind my desk with my fists braced on the wood and watched the old man settle into the chair across from me as if it belonged to him.

Eldwyn simply smiled and folded his hands in his lap.

“You’re very like yo

    CHAPTER 31: The Leash|| Ashina Lockwood’s POV ||“Morwenna,” Seris breathed.The name seemed to cool the room. The candle flame leaned away from her as though it had heard.“Who?” I kept my voice low.“The witch Eldwyn serves.” She pressed her palms against her knees to stop them shaking. “I never saw her face in the circle, Ashina. She sits behind a curtain of smoke. But I saw her hands, and they were thin, grey and strung with bone beads she carves from the knuckles of wolves who refused her.”A witch with a name, a grudge and a jewelry collection. Everyone in this castle was accessorizing, and every piece of it was lethal.“David wears a silver chain beneath his shirt,” I whispered. “I have never seen the pendant, but the cold pours off it. And Eldwyn wears a crescent pin at his collar.”Seris closed her eyes.“Then the pendant will be a crescent to match it.” Her voice dropped even lower. “Eldwyn has been feeding your husband for much longer than the ring. The chain cools the blo

    CHAPTER 30: The Black Stone|| Ashina Lockwood’s POV ||“The stables are closed to the Luna this evening,” the taller guard informed me for the third time. “Alpha’s orders.”I had reached the top of the cell stairs at a dead run and shoved the heavy door open so hard that it cracked against the wall. The pair of them had been waiting exactly where I’d left them, as faithful as hounds. In the space of a few breaths, I had demanded a horse, an escort, a carriage and, in desperation, a donkey, and they had refused all four with the same wooden face.“Then take me to the Alpha.”“He is dining with Elder Eldwyn and left word that he is not to be disturbed.” The shorter guard shifted his weight. “We are to see you back to your chambers, Luna.”Of course he had. My husband had cleared his entire evening for his new best friend and left his wife in the care of two jailers in livery.I could have screamed. I could have hit one of them with a candlestick, if I had been carrying one. Instead, I

    CHAPTER 29: The Question in the Cells|| Ashina Lockwood’s POV ||“He cornered me beside the crop ledgers and asked whether I would speak for him at council,” I answered, and I was pleased to hear that I sounded bored. “I suggested he ask someone who didn’t have to explain her midnight walks to a guard. He took it badly.”“His eyes were glowing.”“It was a full moon, David. Your brother’s eyes glow when he’s angry, when he’s amused and when he’s ordering breakfast. I assure you I wasn’t admiring them.”David’s hand stayed on the doorframe. The silver chain swung gently against his shirt, and the cold in the room pressed against my skin like a wet cloth.“Yet you left our bed to meet him,” he murmured.“I left our bed to find a book.” I tilted my head. “Since we’re trading observations about who haunts libraries before dawn, did Eldwyn mention what he was doing there himself? I looked, David. I saw a candle, a pale cloak and a very pleasant smile, and I saw no book anywhere. I would be

    CHAPTER 28: The Terms|| Ashina Lockwood’s POV ||“Sit down, Ashina. I’d like to say this only once.”David didn’t turn from the hearth when he spoke. Two guards had marched me up from the great hall as though I might bolt, with the whole pack hissing and muttering in the corridors behind us, and they had shut the sitting room door the moment I crossed the threshold, which left the two of us alone with a fire that gave off no heat at all.I sat. After an afternoon of lying to a hall full of elders with my heart in my throat, my knees were grateful for the invitation, though I would have chewed through the chair leg before admitting it.“Your performance in the hall was impressive,” he went on in a flat, even tone. “Half my elders are calling my brother a menace to my unborn heir, and the other half are calling you a hero. You lied to my face in front of the entire pack without a single stumble.”“I was frightened,” I answered. “He had just threatened my husband.”“Of course you were.”

    CHAPTER 27: The Shadow Investigation|| Marcello Calisto’s POV ||“What did my brother just call you?”David’s soft, deadly voice carried down the length of the great hall behind me, and my shoulders locked tight.The guards kept hauling me toward the doors. I didn’t fight them, and I didn’t look back, but I slowed my steps just enough to listen. Lycan ears were a curse at the best of times, but in that moment, they were the only weapon I had left.For one horrible heartbeat, Ashina didn’t make a sound.Then her clear, cold voice rang out, loud enough for every elder to hear.“He was mocking me, David!” she shot back. “‘Keep breathing, my mate,’ as though I belong to him now that he’s been caught, and then he swore he would find his way back. He means to come back for you, and he wanted me to know it.” Her voice wobbled just enough to sound real. “Is that what traitors do now? Threaten the Alpha through his pregnant wife?”Oh, she was magnificent.The hall erupted in angry muttering.

    CHAPTER 26: The Arrest|| Ashina Lockwood’s POV ||“Seize my brother.”David’s voice rang off the rafters of the great hall, and for a heartbeat, nobody moved.I had walked in barely a minute earlier, summoned from my chambers by a nervous maid who wouldn’t meetmy eyes. The hall was packed. The elders stood clustered near the hearth, and the Mistvale delegation lined theeastern wall in their pale grey cloaks, with Eldwyn standing at their center like a kindly old grandfather at anaming feast. Seris hovered by a pillar with her arms wrapped around herself. Near the servants’ door, Eirlysstood pale and stiff, clutching her satchel so tightly that her knuckles had gone white.And in the middle of it all, Marcello stood facing his brother across the long high table, with Kaedros and adozen Lycans at his back.Oh, Moon Goddess, what now?“On what charge?” Marcello asked mildly, as though David had invited him to a game of cards.David lifted a handful of papers from the table and held
