DONOVAN
The loud music and annoying chatterings under the neon colourful disco lights fills my ears and as I sipped from my glass of red cherry wine, I want nothing better than leaving already. I was never one to like parties, unless my friends dragged me along. More less, a party that only made me feel less of myself. Because unlike every other person, the party has never benefited me in any way. It never gave me a mate even after I became a teenager. In a few months, I will be twenty and taking over my father's place as the Alpha and Lycan King and yet, I did not have a mate yet. There is nothing more frustrating than that."All hail the moon goddess!"I turn my head to the direction of the familiar voice to see my friends and their girlfriends striding to my direction. I force a smile at them, knowing too well that they are about to make my life miserable."Hey." I click my glass with Randall's as he reaches me and the girls give me quick hugs before taking their seats beside me. Looking at how complete and happy they are reminds me that once again, I am what you would call...mateless.If that is even a word."What's up, bro? You look...you." Randall says with a chuckle. "Where's your lady?"I shrug and take another sip of my drink, watching Lewis play with his girlfriend's boobs. I throw my eyes away again. "I don't know. She's supposed to be here."Knowing Lori, I am sure she would be busy still trying to cake her face up and find the 'perfect' dress for the party."Lori will always be Lori." Lewis chips in with an annoying chuckle. "I wonder how you are going to handle her when the both of you eventually get mated."I play with the rims of my glass as he spoke. Everyone else believes Lori would someday, be my mate. I don't doubt that too. We have been together for two years now and it was only fair we end up as mates. But then again, I used to believe the feeling you get with you mate was...divine. Eccentric. A kind of feeling that would take you out of the world. Something you have never felt before your entire life. But with Lori, it is different. I do like her. But not like the way everyone describes their feelings with their mates. Or perhaps, they are lying and there is nothing like that eccentric feeling.Just...feelings. Nothing special. My eyes lift and from a distance, I can see Lori cat walk to our direction, her usual arrogant smirk on her face. She waves at a few people and sneered at some.Lori, the most popular girl in the entire Red wood park. Lori, my about-to-be-mate."Here comes the queen bee." Randall announces and Lori gives him a playful shove of his head when she finally reaches us. She is dressed in a tight-fitting, very short and flimsy gown and I tightened my jaw as I imagine the many things I can do to her in that dress."Hey." She slips a hand around me and plants a gentle kiss on my lips. "Missed me?"I bite my lip as I stare at her exposed cleavage. Lori is the most sexiest girl I have ever seen, and there is no denying that."Maybe." I whispered back and she kisses me again on my lip before taking a seat beside me."How's it going, guys?" She asked, sipping from my drink and I eyed her lipstick stain on the rims."Great." Randall replies with a cunning smile. "We've been waiting for hours.""Oh, boo." Lori answers with a fake sympathetic tone."Forgive me, already. You know how annoying I can be."She looks back at Lewis and Randall's girlfriends; Valerie and Katy with a fake pout. "Blame your girlfriends for ditching their best friend for dicks."The boys laugh at her words and even I couldn't help a chuckle."You know I would chose a dick a hundred times over everything else, Lori." Katy replied with a seductive bite of her lips and we laughed again. My friends are the most savage crew and no matter how annoying they can be, they never fail to crack me up every single time."You know, the two of you better find a mate, yeah? It's getting tiring, watching you wait every single full moon night for that one person to change your lives forever." Lewis said, lighting a cigar and puffing out smokes.Lori wraps her hand around me again and sends Lewis a smirk. "The moon goddess is taking her time to pair the most perfect couple together. You don't understand that Donovan and I are a dynamite, do you?"I am beginning to get uncomfortable with their conversation and ransacked through my hair for a perfect excuse to escape them."What would you say about nerdy Alexis, then?" Valerie replies. "According to what I have heard, she is yet to be mated just like the both of you. Would you say she is also being specially prepared for her mate, just like you?"Alexis. My mind is taken back to the sharp-mouthed nerd in school. It had never occurred to me that she would be mated like the rest of us. She is a complete tomboy and I didn't think she has interests in boys."Didn't Randall say she was gay?" I lift a brow at Valerie who rolls her eyes in turn."You wouldn't believe that rumours, would you? I heard Sally tried to kiss her once in the janitor's closet and she turned her down...""Maybe it was because she wasn't interested in her. Sally looks like dog poop." Lewis cut in with a laugh."Or maybe it was just baseless rumours and she is as straight as the rest of us." Valerie maintains."Here comes the devil." Katy announces and we all looked the direction of her eyes and instantly, I smell the most pleasant scent I had never perceived. My heart twril and dances and I find it difficult to say a word."Who dresses like that to a party?" Lori laughs as we stare at Alexis in a knee length gown and a dark leggings covering her legs. She has a kind of ribbon on her hair and a pink pair of heels over her feet.My heart melts as I stare intently at her while her eyes roams the party as though she is lost or didn't want to be here."I sincerely feel for whoever would be mated to her. She is a disaster." I hear Randall's voice behind me and I felt the flutters in my stomach."She is my mate." I hear myself say.Alexis is my mate.ALEXISI ignore the stares and whispers coming from every students in the cafetaria and try to find an empty seat. I gulp nervously as the dense atmosphere hits me. I had figured Monday morning would likely be something of this sort. But I never imagined it would be this worst. All because of Donovan.I didn't ask for this. I never did.I finally find an empty seat and plop myself on it, arranging my food tray carefully before me. I pull out my book from my underarm and immediately dive into my world of bookish cage while I ate from my food. For the first time since a very long time, I feel naked and vulnerable and wish Aurora was here. Why did she have to miss school today of all days?Suddenly, a hand slaps aggressively against the top of my table, causing my drink to jerk and spill on my book. The wolf in me jerks in fright and I raise my eyes to see Donovan and his friends standing before me, their girlfriends standing by them, owning evil smirks."What's up...faggie?" Lewis, t
I feel nervousness wash through me as I advance closer to Marie's Tasty Buds where I work. As I stand at the doorway, I swallow hard, straining with mild effort as I did. I give a short silent prayer to the gods. Please, don't let me get in trouble for arriving late. I will give anything to be safe from Ms. Bell. Then quietly, but with precise pre-caution, I push the doors open, and the first thing that greets me asides the faces of the customers eating away as usual, oblivion as to what was about to happens, was an angry pair of eyes under winged glasses that belonged to a stout, long brunette woman. Ms. Bell.My prayers have gone unanswered again. The gods have forsaken me again. I make to close the distance between us but before I could take a few steps towards her, the stout woman who owns and manages the cafeteria for twelve years ever since the early demise of her husband, half-ran, half-drags her feet towards me, as though ready to lunge at me any moment from now. I curse t
DONOVANI walk into the dining where my father and mother are both seated, already digging into their food. The sweet aroma of the plentiful foods on the table causes my stomach to grumble in hunger. My mother lifts her eyes to see me as I approached the table and a smile stretch across her beautiful face. "Donovan." She mentions and my father looks at me too, mimicking my mother's smile. My parents are the perfect alpha-luna pair. It is one rare sight to see my father without mother. They are what you would call...the inseparable duo."Hello, father. Hello, mother." I reflex their smile and draw a seat on the table. The right hand guards of my parents give me a curt nod as I did."Having such a good time with your friends to forget dinner with your loving parents?" My father said as he resumed eating and I chuckle lightly. If only he knew I was busy trying to keep a wounded girlfriend at bay."I wouldn't dare.""Here." My mother adds more meat to my dish. "Have so more. Farley made
ALEXIS POVIt is 9pm now and Marie’s is closed for the day. And as always, I do not spare an extra minute, and begin my journey home. I have had a long tiring day, just like every other day before this and right now, what I need to do so badly, is have a nice warm Granda Rivera’s meal and a long peaceful night sleep on my fateful old rickety bed.And pray that Lori gets better and I don't face expulsion tomorrow. In a few minutes, I am in my neighborhood fortress. That old slum neighborhood that housed all the low-class werewolves in Redwood. It is a place where criminals, drug addicts and prostitutes lurk around in every corner, their eyes prying on you. A place I have grown to love. I was born here, Grandma Rivera says. My mother had gotten pregnant for a random stranger during a one-night stand and when mother gave birth to me, she abandoned me at Grandma Rivera’s doorstep a few weeks later and ran away to a place where no one ever got to hear from her again. Whatever had happened
ALEXIS POVI gently push the door of our small old wooden house open and step in, shutting the decades old door behind me. I give a heavy heave with closed eyes.Home. I am finally home, greeted by the homey smell of baked brownies and freshly cleaned room. And need I mention Grandma Rivera sitting on her old rocky chair, knitting something...a tablecloth, I guess."Alexis, honey." She looks at me as I walk in, a good natured smile on her slightly wrinkled face. "You’re back."I move to her and place a kiss on both of her cheeks."Yes, Grandma Rivera.’"How did your day go?’ She resumes knitting again, sparing me only a glance."Tiring," I drop my bag on the only and old cushion in our living room. "Hectic," I begin to walk towards the kitchen. "And just the same as every other day. Nothing special about it."The thought of telling her what transpired between me and Lori crosses my mind but I quickly shove it away. I wouldn’t want to give the woman any reason to worry. She heart is al
ALEXIS POVThe next few days in school were like one hell of a week for me. Everyone was keeping a long distance with me, while whispering and pointing accusing fingers at me, behind my back. Although it was a good thing that Lori and her friends avoided me for the rest of the week, I couldn't help but feel bad over her bandaged nose which I had heard had broken from the impact of my fist on her face. Even though it was quite funny seeing her a little disfigured, I strained myself a couple of times from laughing whenever she would stare at me with so much hate under her heavily bandaged nose. One thing that killed me most was the fact that Donovan began to stare at me with so much distaste and irritation, like I was the filthiest thing he had ever come across. It did hurt me more than ever. But asides that, I had been serving my detention pretty well as the Principal had shown me mercy this time around, even when it was her daughter I had assaulted. Next time, she had warned, I wo
DONOVAN'S POVAs I eat on the cafeteria table with the rest of my friends, I cannot stop myself from glancing over at Alexis' direction where she is seated all alone by herself, eating her cheap free meal. It is no surprise to anyone in RedWood Academy why students like Alexis are not offered rich exquisite foods like the rest of us.The answer is quite simple and obvious. They are scholarship students who were lucky enough to be accepted into the Academy. Our school is for high class kids and people like Alexis didn't quite fit in. And yet, I am quite impressed with how non-chalant Alexis is about the whole situation and never acted pathetic or sorry for herself. She did not even try to fit in and lick the asses of the elite kids for some sort of validation or acceptance like the other scholarship kids did.Her eyes finally raise from her food and meet my eyes, holding my gaze mine for a brief second. I look away immediately, panic shooting through me as soon as I do so. I grit my te
CHAPTER NINE LYCAN KINGALEXIS’ POV“Uh…hello. Can I have a cup of caramel macchiato and some bagels?” Another woman's voice comes just as I finish fixing and serving the previous customer. I try my best to hide my displeasure, and I fix a thin smile on my face. “Sure, ma’am. I’ll be on it.” I reply and assign her a table tag. As soon as the woman leaves to her table, I stare at Freeda’s way. The redhead gives me a toothy apologetic goofy smile, her phone still clutched to her ear. A part of me feels like lurching on her and ripping the phone off her ear to spare myself the stress of covering up for her while she spends her entire work hours on a phone call with her boyfriend. But then again, the soft considerate side of me holds my feet to my spot and stops me from tearing her to pieces.Freeda gives me a larger smile, and I sigh and roll my eyes at her again, before moving to the counter behind me to fix the customer’s coffee. I wonder how she can be this selfish and inconsiderate
