“Wake up, Elisa. Have you forgotten you need to do your registration at NeverDale High school today.”
I was sleeping soundly when I heard a loud knock on my door. I tried to sleep once more, this time with my pillow over my ear. But mum banged on the door.
“If you don’t come out right now, I will break the door.”
I opened my eyes instantly and sat up.
“I’m up, mom.” I said and she walked away.
I slipped from my bedroom into the bathroom to take a bath. I packed my long black hair before taking a bath. Even though Mum’s family all had blonde hair, I was the only one that had black hair. Maybe I got it from my dad, because he also had black hair.
Additionally, I have Heterochromia Iridum, a rare disorder that causes my eyes to be two distinct hues. My left eye was Amber color, while my right eye was olive green.
My grandma told me that my great-grandmother also had this type of my eyes so I was convinced this was also hereditary.
I scowled as I stared in the mirror. I felt like a walking anomaly all the time. Even though I had friends at my previous school, I was constantly teased by other students because of my different eye colors. I didn't find that aspect of myself attractive for a long time. I put on a plain and unobtrusive outfit— a basic blue jeans and beige top.
I went out of my room after grabbing the remaining potato chips I had purchased yesterday. NeverDale high school parking lot was almost full when we arrived.
After getting out of their vehicles, students went to their classes. The air surrounding us was filled with talks and chatter. After a while, we found the admission office.
"Hello. Welcome.” A fat woman with glasses
on her face greeted us as we got inside the admission office. "New here?"
“Yes ma’am. Here to register my daughter.” Mum said.
“What’s your make pretty?” The fat woman asked me.
I smiled and said to her, "Elisa Moss."
Mum told me on our way here to change my surname to Reggie’s, but I refused because Reggie was not my biological father.
“Nice name.”
Glancing through a stack of papers, the woman grinned. "Take this, Ms. Moss. Fill your details and we’ll proceed on. Don’t forget to read the school rules and regulations.”
"Okay." I took the paper from her.
….
Two minutes later, the whole process was completed and I was directed to my class. Mum already went back home and I was now left alone. I made an effort to blend in with the group of students as i look around for my classroom.
I bumped into someone while I was glancing at different classes looking for mine. If it weren't for the overpowering scent of cologne, I would have assumed it was a brick wall as my butt thudded on the floor.
My mouth dropped when I looked up at the person I had just collided with. Two enormous, irate twins were standing in front of me. They looked like they belonged on the cover of a magazine rather than a high school, and I had never seen two guys like that before. They both had very brown eyes, powerful jaw lines, and jet black hair. Despite having a lot of muscle, they both maintained their athletic slimness. In their own unique ways, they were all breathtakingly beautiful.
A tall blonde- hair girl clung to one of the twins' arms while a heart-shaped grimace developed on her face incredulously.
"What the hell is wrong with you?” The blonde-hair girl asked, making it seem as if I bumped Into them on purpose.
I barely gave the blonde hair girl a glance since my gaze was constantly drawn to the two godlike twins above me. They looked at one another as though they were conversing in private. I forced myself not to roll my eyes, but my mouth responded abruptly.
"It wasn’t like I did it on purpose though."
"You pig. Better watch where you're going next time." The tall blonde hair girl and the twins left after she said this words.
I wasn't sure if it was a good or negative thing that the twins hadn't spoken to me at all. I felt as though I was staring into the eyes of my new bullies because of the icy expression in their eyes. It was already becoming a nightmare to keep to myself.
After getting up from the ground, I continue looking for my classroom. Luckily I found it at last. Now I just needed to focus on my studies and continue getting my good scores like I did in my previous school.
…..
Neither the harsh blonde girl nor the handsome twins were in my first class. I sat down next to a girl with short brown hair after the teacher directed me to a seat next to her.
She told me her name and smiled slightly. "I'm Sadie."
I looked around at the curious students nearby and cleared my throat before smiling and saying, "I’m Elisa."
"Such a pretty name." Sadie said.
"It wasn’t given to me by my dad.” I said.
"Your eyes looks pretty too.”
"Thanks."
Receiving praise for my eyes seemed to be uncommon, so I grinned.
I talked to Sadie for the majority of the session and tried to gently inquire about the godlike twins I had actually encountered.
"Oh the twins." Sadie frowned. “You mean Curt and Knox."
"They are identical. How do different them?" I asked. Their names seemed to be a perfect fit for their bad-boy personas.
Sadie sighed. "Knox Is introverted, while Curt is not. Always seen with different girls. That how I managed to differentiate them.”
"Okay." I gave a nod. I wanted to stop thinking about the two of them, but I couldn't. I felt weird because of the icy way they were staring at me. But I kept thinking about them.
"I wouldn't mess with them if I were you." Sadie said, "They flirt with different girls a lot.”
"I wasn’t even planning on it." I gave a head-shake. At that moment, I made a commitment to myself that I would not become involved with Curt and Knox. Moreover, they would never pursue someone like me, though. In any case, it appeared that they were interested in the glitzy model-type girls. I was the exact opposite. In addition to my tendency to keep to myself, I was usually utterly awkward.
While chit-chatting, I got to know that Sadie works in a restaurant and the restaurant was looking for a waitress. Since I was now far away from dad, and I knew mum would never
bother to take care of me, I told Sadie I was interested in the waitress job.
The prospect of working as a waitress undoubtedly terrified me. The more anxious I became, the more awkward I seemed to get, and nobody wanted a waiter to spill drinks on them.
“What if I spill drink all over the customers? I’m scared.” I asked.
"That’s normal, but with time you become good at it. Also, I have a car and will drive you to the restaurant for the interview after school
tomorrow.” She responded.
“Okay.”
After earning this sizable sum of money from tips alone, I was very happy. Now, I would undoubtedly be able to recoup some of the money I had spent on basics and clothing. I was relieved to be off work, but returning home was a whole other story. Mum wasn’t back from her cleaner job in an office when Sadie dropped me off. Reggie was the only one at home. From the moment I walked inside, I saw his utterly shit-faced. He watched a hazy football game on TV while lounging in the recliner. I exhaled as his face twisted in rage. "Where the fuck have you been?" Struggling to get off the recliner, he spat. "Working, Reggie." I responded. "Working?" He jumped up from the recliner and mocked, stumbling. "You were out whoring around like your fucking mother." I frowned as I stopped walking. Whore around? Did he forget I was the one taking care of myself since my dad hadn’t been sending me money for a while now. I was too busy going to school and
"Are you really sure?” I asked Sadie for the second time again. Sadie sighed already tired of me asking the same question twice. "Yeah, it’s fine.” Sadie responded. Sadie insisted on giving me a ride every day after learning that I intended to walk thirty minutes to work from school. The act made me feel like a complete loser because I wasn't used to people wanting to help me. "Let me at least give you gas money every week." I said. People in this town tended to tip well, but the initial part of the day was a little slow. I only spilled orders on myself, not on other people, but so far I seemed to be doing okay. I was appreciative that the uniforms I was given was a tight black pants and a black t-shirt with the restaurant's logo. The black shirt did not show any of my spills on my body. Waves of my black long hair fell down my back. Our thirty-minute break had barely ended when Sadie and I returned to the restaurant. I glanced out at the restaurant after peekin
When I walked to my next class and noticed Sadie in class, sitting in the middle seat, I was so happy. We continued our conversation in the lesson that followed. "The people here really aren't all bad." Sadie smiled. "You'll survive with no problem as long as you avoid Dina and her friends." "Dina?" I frowned and asked, not aware who she was. "The blonde girl who hangs around Curt and Knox." Oh Dina. The one the who called me a pig. "Too late. I bumped into her on my way looking for my classroom.” I said. Sadie trembled and said, "Just avoid Curt, Knox and Dina completely from now on. Dina is quite possessive and is currently with Curt.” “Okay, I will…” I was grateful for Sadie’s advice. In my subsequent lesson, both Curt and Knox were present. They sat alone at the back. By the time I came into the classroom, the front seat was already occupied so the teacher asked me to go back and sit close to Curt and Knox. I nearly went crazy after hearing this, bu

“Of course it’s always my fault. Did I force you to marry me? Did I force you to give birth to her? Please shut up, Sarah.” My dad yelled from the bedroom and I could hear his voice from the parlor. They have began their usual quarreling again. “I shouldn’t have gotten married to you. It was the biggest mistake I made in my life. I’m regretting it everyday. You know what? I’m done in this marriage. I want a divorce, Dante. And also custody of Elisa.” … My mum, Sarah, always wanted to be an actress, but when she got pregnant for my dad, Dante, who was poor, she could not fulfill her dreams anymore and had to marry him, eventually becoming a full house wife. Growing up, I always saw my parents quarreling over little issues and my mum always saying she regretted getting married to dad and getting pregnant for him. So when they divorced, I was not surprised. It been two years now after the divorce, mum had gotten remarried to Reggie Fisher, and now we were moving from Sky ci
