LOGINThe auditorium was already crowded when I arrived. I slipped inside and searched for an empty seat determined to become as invisible as possible. It was going reasonably well until I walked straight into someone.
"Watch it." The words were sharp. I stumbled backwards, clutching my bag to my chest. "Sorry, I wasn't looking." Then he looked at me and everything stopped. He had silver-grey eyes, dark hair with a distinct silver stripe at the front. His hair fell carelessly across his forehead and his jaw that looked as though it had been carved from stone. He was tall, broad shouldered and dressed in a black shirt and slacks. As though the entire world had disappeared and I was the only thing left in it. My heart slammed against my ribs. Heat spread through my body. My wolf surged so violently that I grabbed the edge of a nearby desk. My wolf was clawing, no tearing at the surface now. Was I about to shift? No not like this. Not in front of all of these people. The boy's expression changed, too. His nostrils flared, and his fingers curled at his sides. For one strange moment, neither of us moved. Then he took a step towards me. I instinctively stepped back. Something flickered across his face and his eyes flashed from silver to black. It was gone so quickly that I wondered if I'd imagined it. "Grey!" Someone called from the other side of the auditorium. His head snapped towards the sound. The spell between us broke as he glared at a girl with blonde hair and extremely tight clothes. He looked back at me, his expression suddenly guarded. Then he walked away without another word. I stood there, feeling as though the ground had shifted beneath my feet. Who was he? And why was my wolf reacting to people like this. My phone vibrated. A message from Elena appeared on the screen. Elena: We did good, sis. That boy that defended you was Lucien Thorne. The girls let me in on who is and I need you to convince him what he saw was wrong. I can't be on an Alpha's bad side. I stared at the message, not in the particular mood for Elena and her antics right now. I locked my phone and went to find a seat as most of the other students were already seated. I found an empty seat at the back of the auditorium. There was one space beside a boy with reddish hair, warm brown eyes and freckles scattered across his nose. He glanced at me as I sat down. Again my wolf surged. Perhaps this was hot flushes... no don't be ridiculous Daliah. Menopause didn't start at eighteen and could I get a pause from men when I have had none to begin with. "Kieran," the boy said, offering his hand. I looked at it uncertainly before shaking it. "Dahlia." The moment our fingers touched, his smile disappeared and it felt like a surge of electricity crawled up my arm. His eyes widened slightly. Then he released my hand quickly. I stared at him. "Are you okay?" "Yeah... did you feel that?" Before I could answer a voice boomed through the speakers. "Welcome students, I am professor Dawn the dean of this fine institution and I am pleased to welcome all our first year students and returning students for another academic year at Crescent Hollow Academy." I noticed kieren still staring at me and I smiled at him to be polite. I fidgeted with my hands in my lap, my wolf still having a mental episode and me threatening her that I will drink a whole bottle of wolfsbane if she didn't quit it. I was not about to wolf out for the first time in a room full of students like some uncontrollable teen wolf. I spent the rest of orientation trying to concentrate on the dean's speech. "The academy is one of the oldest institutions in the kingdom. We train future pack leaders, warriors, healers and scholars. Students come from influential bloodlines across the world. Beyond that some of you will grow into your full potential while here." When orientation ended I stood to leave. "Hey wait," Keir grabbed my arm gently and that gesture alone made me weak in the knees. "Can we get a cup of coffee." My breath caught in my throat. Male attention wasnt something completely foreign to me yet it still shocked me that anyone would be interested in me. My phone beeped and I broke away from Keiran remembering I did not respond to Elena's message. I lookee down at the screen and it was another text from her saying that I should meet her outside. I looked up at Keiran ."I can't," I said and his face fell. "Oh," he scratched the back of his head, "yeah sure. Maybe another time." I hurried outside, without another word. If I were someone else maybe I would have accepted that coffee with Kieran. But I was Dahlia and the moment I stopped giving Elena all my attention she would throw the biggest tantrum, calling me a bad and selfish sister. So I never had any relationships. I spotted Elena standing with a group of girls by the school benches. I just happened to hear bits and pieces of their discussion as I walked up to them. They were discussing the best parties, the hottest boys and which families had the most influence at the academy. When she spotted me, her smile tightened. "Finally. Where have you been?" "In there?" I looked at her confused. "Well, come on. We need to unpack before dinner." I followed her across the courtyard. I'd almost convinced myself that the strange events of the morning meant nothing when I felt my wolf scratching again the further away we got from the auditorium. Him, she whispered. And I froze. I had never heard her voice before. I stopped walking and Elena tugged my arm. "Dahlia! Honestly, what is wrong with you today?" I forced myself to move. "Nothing..." I hope.Everything around me seemed to go quiet. I stared at him. He stared at me. "Dahlia," Ara nudged me gently with her elbow. "Say something."Slowly, I pulled my arms free from his hold.I bent to retrieve my shopping bags, desperately hoping that when I straightened, he would have disappeared. But instead, he bent down to help me, cementing just how real all of this was. "I'm Logan," he said, holding out one of my bags to me.I accepted it. "Dahlia."His expression changed. For a moment, he seemed to be searching for the right words. Then he smiled. It was an easy, charming smile, but something about it made me uneasy."That's a beautiful name.""Thanks." I dusted off my hands, unsure of what else to say."Well, I was just leaving," Ara announced suddenly. My eyes widened."No, you weren't. You were going to have lunch with me."She threw her hands up dramatically. "Oh, you know what? I forgot to feed Cheeto.""Cheeto?" I questioned."My pet turtle.""You have a pet turtle?"I had never
I couldn't sleep.I'd been lying in bed for nearly an hour, tossing and turning beneath my duvet, staring at the ceiling. I was certain that I was slowly going insane. Perhaps none of this was really happening. Maybe a coconut fell on my head while I was picking wild flowers in the forest. Because I couldn't understand what possessed me to steal an artefact or the fact that I agreed to date both Lucien and Keir. Or maybe it was all of that on top of the way Grey looked at me earlier. It was enough to send my wolf recoiling. I couldn't understand what made him so angry. No one said anything after he left, we all went out separate way to our rooms. With a groan, I threw the duvet aside and climbed out of bed. Food. I needed food. Preferably something that didn't involve thinking. I pulled on a pair of comfortable trousers and a loose sweater before tying my hair into a messy bun. Then I shuffled out of my bedroom and headed downstairs. I expected to find the kitchen empty. Inst
The Dean's office had never looked quite so intimidating. I sat in one of the leather chairs, my hands folded tightly in my lap. Keiren occupied the seat beside me, looking considerably more relaxed than someone who had just been caught stealing a restricted supernatural artefact had any right to look. The artefact rested on the Dean's desk. Dean Ashford stood behind it, his expression unreadable. I had never been particularly fond of authority figures, but I had a feeling I was about to develop a lifelong aversion to them."Would either of you care to explain," the Dean began, "why you were found inside a restricted museum after hours, in possession of an artefact that belongs to the academy?"I stared at my hands. Keiren cleared his throat."Well...""Not you, Mr Whitmore."Keiren closed his mouth. The Dean turned to me. "Miss Dahlia?"I swallowed. "I wanted to find out more about the artefact.""By stealing it?""When you put it like that, it sounds bad.""It is bad.""Yes, sir."
I had a terrible idea.Actually, calling it a terrible idea was being generous. It was the sort of idea that could get me expelled. But some things were just too important. The artefact museum was located on the eastern side of the academy, tucked behind the history and mythography department. According to the campus map I'd spent the last twenty minutes studying, there were two entrances, three security cameras, and a security station at the end of the corridor.I was currently hiding behind a ugly marble statue of a wolf. I peered around its stone hindquarters to check if it was all clear. I checked the time on my phone it was 8:43 p.m.The academy's evening activities ended at nine, which meant I had approximately seventeen minutes before the corridors became significantly less deserted.I glanced down at the folded piece of paper in my hand. I'd sketched the corridor from memory, marking the doors and the camera positions I'd observed earlier. It wasn't a particularly good ma
I sat in my room, hugging my pillow. Tears streamed down my face. I was scared. Too many things were happening and I couldn't keep up anymore. "Dahlia," Lucien knocked on my bedroom door. "What happened? I can sense that you're not okay." I didn't say anything. I didn't know what to say. The door cracked open and, Lucien popped his head in. He took one look at me and then rushed over "Whats the matter?" His eyes snanned my cacooned form. "Are you hurt?""I... I don't know whats happening to me, Lucien," I admitted. Lucient went silent. "My wolf has been acting strange for the last couple of days and when I found out about you and Kieren," he seemed to recoil at the mention of our situation. "Well I figured it was because of that..." he didn't say anything. "Then today I went to class and I dont know what happend. I touched one of the artefacts and I think I felt something I can't explain," I cried. "What's wrong with me?" I cried harder this time. Usually I would be mortified to be
I had never lived in a house where someone actually wanted me to stay. It was a strange feeling. As Ara dragged me up the staircase at Montague House, chatting as though we had known each other for years, I found myself struggling to understand why she was being so kind to me. She didn't know me. She didn't know about the years I was called a freak because I couldn't shift. And yet, she was treating me as though my presence was something to celebrate. It was almost frightening. "Here we are!" Ara announced throwing open a door at the end of the hallway. I stepped inside and stopped. The bedroom was beautiful. A large bed stood against the far wall, dressed in white linen with dark green cushions. There was a wooden desk beneath the window, a wardrobe large enough to hold twice the clothes I owned, and a small sitting area with two armchairs beside a bookshelf. Moonlight streamed through the tall windows, illuminating the polished wooden floor. I stared at the room in
