Dahlia's POV

The first thing I noticed about my grandmother's hiding place was that it was nothing like I had expected.

I had imagined a small wooden cabin tucked away in the forest, perhaps with a fireplace, a few old books and enough space for the two of us to sleep.

I certainly hadn't imagined this.

The sanctuary opened into a magnificent stone residence, hidden behind a wall of thick trees and climbing ivy. Tall windows stretched across the front of the building, glowing warmly from the

The forest was considerably less welcoming at night. During the day, there was something almost magical about the towering trees, the scattered sunlight filtering through the branches and the soft rustling of leaves beneath my feet.At night, however, it was an entirely different story. Shadows stretched between the trees, and every unfamiliar noise made me question why I had thought this was a good idea. "Remind me again why we're doing this?" Kieren asked, stepping over a fallen branch."Because I need answers.""Right. And these answers couldn't possibly wait until tomorrow morning?"I glanced at him."Would you prefer I accidentally awaken another wolf's ability during training tomorrow?"He considered that. "Fair point."I smiled, pulling my jacket a little tighter around myself. Kieren had been surprisingly enthusiastic about our little adventure, although I suspected that had more to do with his curiosity than his willingness to wander through a dark forest in search of my gran

The problem with having an eventful life was that there never seemed to be a moment to recover from it.Elena was telling anyone who would listen that I had deliberately orchestrated her expulsion, which was interesting considering she had been the one to throw a drink at a memeber of the Valemont's.And then there was the small matter of my wolf.I had been drinking the herbal mixture my grandmother had given me every morning, just as instructed. It tasted absolutely dreadful, but I couldn't deny that it seemed to be helping. My wolf was quieter. The constant irritation that had been building inside me had settled, and I wasn't snapping at people quite as often."You're doing it again."I looked up from my breakfast. Ara was sitting opposite me, examining my face with an expression of concern"Doing what?""Looking like you've been resurrected against your will."I laughed."Good morning to you too.""I'm serious. You look exhausted."I shrugged, pushing a piece of fruit around my pl

I woke up smiling.Which was rather unusual, considering the last few weeks had given me very little reason to do so.I kissed Lucien. I pressed my lips together, a ridiculous smile spreading across my face.I could still remember the way his hands had rested against my cheeks, the warmth of his touch and the gentleness with which he had kissed me. It hadn't been rushed or demanding. It had been sweet. And I had kissed him back. That was the part I couldn't stop thinking about.I rolled onto my back and stared at the ceiling again. What exactly did that mean? Was I developing feelings for Lucien, or was it simply the mate bond pulling me towards him? My grandmother had explained that the bond was powerful, but she hadn't told me how to distinguish its influence from my own emotions.I hated that I couldn't tell the difference. A soft knock interrupted my thoughts. "Dahlia? Are you awake?"I recognised Lucien's voice immediately. "Yes!"The door opened slightly, and his head appeared.

The mountains were breathtaking.I had spent most of the journey staring out of the car window, watching the scenery change as we travelled further away from Crescent Hollow. The familiar roads had given way to winding mountain passes, towering pine trees and enormous stretches of green landscape. It was beautiful."You're awfully quiet."I turned towards Lucien, who had one hand resting on the steering wheel. "I'm enjoying the view."He smiled. "You could have said that instead of staring out the window like a tourist.""I am a tourist.""Fair enough."I smiled, settling back into my seat. "How much further?""About fifteen minutes."I looked ahead. "And you said your family lives up here?""On the mountain, yes. We have an estate."Fifteen minutes later, the car turned through a set of enormous wrought-iron gates. A long driveway wound through perfectly maintained gardens, eventually opening towards a magnificent stone mansion.I stared. The property was enormous. The main house st

I had spent most of the night thinking about Grey.Which, quite frankly, was becoming an exhausting habit.I kept replaying our conversation outside the academy, searching for something I might have missed. Some indication that his words hadn't meant what they sounded like. But the more I thought about it, the more I realised I was only making excuses for him. Perhaps I had misunderstood everything.Perhaps when he asked me not to leave, it wasn't because he wanted me to stay. Perhaps he was simply worried about what my grandmother might do to me, or what could happen if I left the academy without understanding the dangers surrounding my bloodline. Maybe there was nothing more to it. And perhaps I needed to accept that. Grey had made it perfectly clear that he didn't want me choosing him. He had also made it clear that he wasn't interested in explaining himself. I couldn't keep chasing someone who seemed determined to push me away. What bothered me more than anything was that

Tall windows stretched across the front of the building, glowing warmly from the light inside. Silver markings had been carved into the stone pillars, and delicate vines curled around the balconies as though the forest itself had grown around the house. It was extravagant. And, judging by the furniture, the artwork and the enormous chandelier hanging above the entrance hall, it was probably worth more than the entire academy. I turned to my grandmother. "Is this where you've been hiding?" She smiled as she stepped past me. "One of the places." "One of the places?" I re
