Luca's Pov

“How long were you trying to move your legs?” I asked her as she properly relaxed her back.

“Not too long,” she said, looking at her bandaged legs. “They hurt,” she whispered. I turned away, avoiding her eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For allowing them to do this to you. For leaving you alone at the ball.” I looked back at her legs. The royal healer said the poison was so strong she could have completely lost them.

But she fought. My girl fought for her life. Her legs burned from the fire, silver, and poison—all at once.

“You don’t have to be sorry, Luca.”

“You don’t understand... I could have lost you,” I said, and she smiled. I can’t imagine the tremendous pain she must be in right now. I hate seeing her like this, and it breaks my heart that I wasn’t there sooner.

If she had stayed inside the party, this wouldn’t have happened. I was the one who told her to wait outside for me. I put her in danger, and she was kidnapped—again, because of me.
