I spent the rest of the night parked on the couch in Zane’s office, with nothing to do except watch him reject and accept new hires that Lucien brought in. Each decision came with a casual: “weak”, “soft”, "pale", “okay”, “not bad”.

He barely looked up, just scrolled through his tablet, answering calls in that emotionless tone of his and every now and then, I’d catch him glancing at me.

Bored out of my mind, I pulled out my phone and started playing COD. It had been so long since I had absolutely nothing to do and was not worried about my chasers. I lost track of time until my phone buzzed with a low battery warning.

“Excuse me,” I said, glancing up at him. “Can I use your charger? My phone is low.”

Without a word, he passed the charger and went right back to his screen. What was he even looking at on that thing?

Once my phone was charging, I was now completely out of distractions. And so, I turned to my new boss who is yet to assign any job to me other than telling me to “stay put”. I decided to speak up.

“Uhm… is there anything I can do?”

“Is it that hard to stay put for just one night?” he asked, without lifting his head.

I blinked, unsure if I should be annoyed or offended.

This is the same man who kissed me a few hours ago, and now he’s acting like I’m a nuisance–even breathing too laid would piss him off.

“I’m not used to staying idle for a long time,” I replied, trying to sound professional but also just a little passive-aggressive. “I came here to work, and you haven’t exactly assigned me anything yet.”

“Sleep.”

“What?”

“You can’t sleep either? That’s strange,” he said, finally glancing my way.

I stared at him, not amused.

“I mean… I’m supposed to be learning about the nightclub if I’m going to assist you. How can I help if I don’t know anything about LUNARI?” I tried reasoning with him.

“You’ll learn tomorrow, but for today, I want you to rest.” He responded back.

Yeah. Clearly, I wasn’t getting anything out of him tonight so I turned, laid down on the couch and did what he asked me to. Sleep.

Morning came, and I heard Lucien’s voice as he entered again, “…Everyone’s been accounted for and they’ve all gone home, no death recorded today, just minor injuries recorded, a few hundred. The account’s balanced, and the club is officially closed for the day. We’re free to go, boss.”

Zane grunted and I heard him get up.

“Jayden,” he called.

I didn’t move. He told me to sleep, so I was committing to the bit.

“Jayden,” he called again.

Silence.

“That’s his name, right? Jayden?” he asked Lucien.

Lucien chucked, “Yep. Jayden.

“This is getting interesting,” Lucien snorted.

“Jayden,” Zane tried again.

Nothing.

Then I heard, “You brought this on yourself. Just so you know.”

What does he mean by that?

Suddenly, I felt strong arms scoop me up like I was a feather pillow—in a full-on bridal carry.

WTH!!!

“Put me down!” I yelped, completely caught off-guard.

How did he even come up with this?

“Oh, you’re awake,” he said, sounding amused, his deep voice vibrating through his chest.

Lucien laughed loudly.

“Yes, I am awake. Put me down.” I snapped, struggling to get out of his grip, but he was too strong and surprisingly moving easily with me in his arms.

I mean, sure, I wasn’t bulky or muscular as most guys my age, but I wasn’t that lean either. I believe I was manly too but this man made it look like I weighed nothing.

“Let me get that for you.” I heard Lucien say and I turned and saw that he was about to leave the office. With me in his arms. No freaking way.

I fought harder.

“Can you stay still?” Zane warned. “I gave you a chance to walk on your own but you didn’t move, I had to make you move somehow, we’re going to my house. I need sleep.”

“You can’t just carry me out like this!” I cried out.

“And why not?”

“Well for one, people will stare,” I replied.

“Nobody is in the club,” Lucien said, still entertained.

“You heard him,” Zane added and kept walking.

“Wait… wait,” I scrambled for an excuse, “Please put me down. I feel… nauseous!”

Obviously, he could tell it was a lie but he obliged anyway. Soon I was on my two feet.

“Thank you,” I muttered, heat creeping up my neck.

“Let’s go.” He said and walked out.

I followed him, Lucien, beside me.

The once-packed club was a ghost town now, not a single soul around.

“Told you.” Lucien said with a grin.

I glanced at him and then looked ahead at Zane. Even the way he walked was so damn hot.

“Ahem.” Lucien caught me staring.

I quickly looked away and he laughed again.

We reached the garage and I saw Zane head towards a silver Rolls-Royce Phantom and Lucien veered off towards a sleek black Maybach.

I stopped in my tracks, who was I supposed to ride with?

“You’re coming with me,” Zane said without turning around.

Lucien gave a low whistle as he entered his car, “See you at home, Alpha. You too, Luna.” He added, giving me a wink.

Zane hissed.

Alpha? Luna? What were those?

“You need help moving again?” Zane asked, irritation creeping into his tone.

I swallowed. “No. I’m good.”

Damn, this was going to be a long ride back to wherever we were headed.

***

The car was silent. Not the awkward kind, but the kind that wrapped itself around you—thick, padded, and way too heavy for someone like me, who grew up in chaos and constant noise.

Zane sat beside me, his hand on the steering wheel, his profile sharp under the morning light. He hadn’t said a word since we left LUNARIS. Not even a grunt.

My legs bounced a little, nervous energy crackling through me. This car was worth more than everything I’d ever owned. Not like I even had enough to start with. I shifted in my seat, my fingers tightening around the sleeves of my hoodie as I peeked at him.

He didn’t even flinch.

Damn.

The roads started to blur as we got farther away from the city. I stared out the window trying to focus on anything but how weird this all was.

Just two days ago, I was jumping motels and barely made it to the city. Now I was in a phantom with a man who looked like a Greek god, on our way to his residence. Yeah. Definitely not wired at all.

I pulled my hoodie over my head as I thought of my parents, I couldn't even remember what they looked like or what my life was like before I started getting chased every day. Did they ever love me? Or was I just dumped in the world like a forgotten sock? I hated that no one had ever come looking for me. I hated that I still hoped.

I was all alone and apparently not so human, if Lucien’s weird comment and Zane’s reactions were anything to go by.

The silence stretched again.

I stared at the man beside me. Again. Probably the hundredth time.

“Why? You have anything to say?” he said, breathing the silence.

“Do you always drive in silence?” I asked.

“Silence helps me think.” He answered.

Another silence.

“How long are we going to take before reaching your house?” I asked.

He didn’t answer, he just drove. Our eyes met for a second, and I felt something tug in my stomach, I quickly looked away and I heard him suck his breath and I noticed his hand tightening on the steering wheel.

We drove for what felt like forever, winding through private roads lined with tall pines. The city was long gone, replaced with woods and mist curling over hills.

Then suddenly, he turned in a corner and I saw the sign, SILVERSPIRE, spread across it.

My stomach flipped.

Then he drove further down and then I saw the gate.

Tall. Ornate with white metal woven into the shape of two wolves circling a crescent moon, glowing faintly under the early sun. Marble pillars stood on each side carved with symbols I didn’t recognize but felt somehow drawn to.

I sat up straight, forgetting to breathe for a second.

“Holy shit” I whispered.

Zane didn’t react. He just drove forward as the gate slowly began to open, parting like an entrance to a secret world.

And I had a feeling that my life would never be the same anymore.

Zane still had me in his arms while the others were kneeling. It felt surreal. I was supposed to be planning to leave Nocturne City by now but instead, I was melting into this man like a goddamn softie.“Congratulations,” I said into his shoulder. He finally pulled back and looked at me like he wanted to say something but he stopped himself and settled with a soft, “Thank you.”I nodded, and just as I was about to move out of his arms, he leaned in and kissed me softly on my lips, in front of everyone. My brain short-circuited and my legs turned to jellyfish. Thank the goddess he was still holding me.The mark on my back burned again, clawing up my spine yanking me back to reality, I then pushed him and mouthed, “People are in the room.” He took a deep breath and turned to them like he hadn’t just lit me on fire. “Stand up,” he ordered firmly.Lucien, Liam, Jake and the guards all stood, their movements precise and synchronized. The tension eased in the room, but I was still processi

I woke up with the scent of him still clinging to my skin.Zane.Everything at this point reminded me of him, even my damn nerves still remembered him—his voice, the feel and taste of his lips on mine, the heat of his hands on my body, and the way I felt with him buried deep inside…Ugh. Jayden. Get a grip. What the hell are you even doing?Every part of me was still tethered to him. I just kept lying there, tangled in sheets that smelled like him, staring at the ceiling like it held the answers to this situation. “Goddess, Jayden,” I muttered, dragging a hand down my face. “You’re pathetic.”Where was that Alpha? I remember him saying something about leaving yesterday. Why isn't he back yet? Did he leave me after all that? I turned over, hugging the pillow to my chest like it could absorb all the questions I didn’t have the guts to say out loud.I miss him.Eventually, my stomach bullied me into getting up—basic survival. Feed yourself before spiralling again. I threw on a hoodie an

"Go shower. I’ll change the bedsheet," I said.He nodded, climbing off me. The moment he left, the warmth of his body vanished, and I immediately missed it. I flopped back against the mattress, dragging a hand through my hair and groaning as the sound of rushing water hit my ears.I laid there for a minute, breathing him in—his scent still lingering on the sheets, on my skin, everywhere. Then I forced myself up, stripped the bed, and changed the sheets quickly.By the time I was done, he was stepping out of the bathroom, towel wrapped around his waist, skin flushed and clean. I couldn't help but stare hard at him before forcing my eyes away as I headed in next, and if his scent had hit me hard before, it was unbearable now. Almost enough to get me hard again.No. Not again.I finished showering fast, wrapped a towel around my waist and stepped back into the room. He was already lying on the bed, hair damp and messy.“I left some clothes for you,” he said with a soft smile.I chuckled,

The room was quiet except for our breathing, heavy and steady. He was so close that I could feel every beat of his heart against mine. As Jayden's hands roamed over me, every inch of my body responded, shivering, burning, wanting more. But something inside me pulled back. What is this? The heat? Or is it something more?I looked into his eyes, seeing the same raw, unspoken desire reflected in them. He’s not just lost in the heat, I realized. There’s something deeper here. He wants this, and maybe, so do I.The moment his lips met mine again, the hesitation was gone. There was no more second-guessing, no more internal debate. All the walls I’d built around myself started to crumble, and I could feel the pull of him like a magnet—impossible to resist. I can't fight this anymore. I want him, all of him. If I don't take this moment, I might regret it.He melted into me, lips parting with a soft sigh as I deepened the kiss. My fingertips grazed his hot skin, and he shivered at the contact.

“Call them again,” I said to Lucien as I entered my office, barely calming myself. ‘Jayden,’ I groaned in my head.Lucien redialed and handed me the phone. The Apex Circle is the ultimate and highest governing body within the werewolf world, the highest hierarchy of Alpha leadership. Composed of the twelve most influential and powerful Alphas from across the globe. The Apex circle is not just a council; it is a brotherhood bound by blood oaths and sacred traditions. After showering, I stepped back into the room and headed straight to the wardrobe still undressed. The wardrobe was filled with neatly arranged clothes that Zane had bought: suits, shirts, joggers, cargo pants, and more hoodies than I could count. I had no idea what to pick. Honestly, I wasn’t used to wearing anything besides my hoodies.Eventually, I settled on cream-colored cargo pants, a loose T-shirt, and, of course, a black hoodie. Not like I was heading anywhere fancy. As I dressed, I realized something strange. I didn't have the nightmares nor the heat symptoms, which was a good thing but I wasn't sure how to interpret that. Does that mean Zane's affecting me too? The same way everyone kept saying I was affecting him?My phone rang, dragging me out of my thoughts.Lucien.“Ehm…” I cleared my throat before answering. “Hello?”“We're waiting for you, you do know that, right?”Shit. I thought they'd start without me. I mean it's their house after all.“Sorry,” I mumbled, sliding i

I woke up to the strong smell of something warm and expensive clouding my nose—woodsy, smoky and a little sweet. It reminded me of oud wood. I scrunched my nose and shifted a little, trying to figure out where it was coming from. That’s when I realized I couldn’t move.I cracked my eyes open and blinked into the curve of someone’s neck. Zane’s neck. His arms were wrapped tightly around me, holding me against him like he wasn’t planning on letting go anytime soon.My heart started hammering as I realized just how close we were. When did this happen? How did I not wake up before now?Carefully, I tilted my head up to get a better look at him. Even asleep, he looked like something straight out of a painting, strong jaw, messy hair, and that annoyingly perfect mouth. I don’t even know how long I stared before my hand started moving on its own, reaching up to brush a strand of hair off his forehead.“Which part of my face do you like the most?” he asked, his voice low and rough with sleep.

“Zane. Zane.”The voice echoed faintly, like it was calling through water.“Wake him up! Undo whatever the hell you did to him—now!”Who’s yelling?“I didn’t do anything!”My brain felt like sludge. Someone was shaking me.“Zane, wake up. Mr. Alpha. Alpha Zane? Fuck! Why aren’t you waking up?!”A sharp sting landed on my shoulder, snapping the darkness like glass. My eyes flew open just as Jayden raised his hand again.“You’re awake,” he breathed, stepping back in relief. Before I could respond, Lucien shoved past him and crouched beside me.“Zane—are you okay? What the hell happened?”I pushed myself upright. My limbs were heavy. Everything felt... slow.“What happened?” I asked, scanning the room. It was dim—the sun already gone.“You slept. The entire day,” he said, eyes filled with concern.“I did what?” I shot wide awake, heart thudding. My mind raced to recall the last thing. Jayden—he was having a panic attack. I told him to come to my room. He laid down on the bed. And then… n

By morning, we were back at the mansion. I could barely keep my eyes open.“Luke, tell the cook to prepare food…” Zane started.“Skip me,” I muttered, dragging myself up the stairs. My body felt like a log of wood. Every step was a full-body negotiation. I reached my room, collapsed onto the bed, and everything went dark the moment my head hit the pillows. For maybe an hour, there was peace. Then the nightmare came.It was the same one. But this time it was sharper, like someone had adjusted the focus just to torture me. The woods were darker, the air thicker. I was running again—barefoot, heart pounding, chest tight. The men were right behind me. Their footsteps thundered in sync with my pulse. I turned once and saw them. Clear as day.Buzz Cut was there. He wasn’t the biggest, but he was fast. Faster than before. My legs burned, lungs screamed. I kept running—until I tripped. That had never happened before. My body hit the ground hard. My knees scraped the dirt and suddenly they wer
