LOGINELARA’S P.O.V.The hissing came again, this time it was louder and angrier. My wolf surged forward, hackles raising, prepared to shift, but my body didn’t move, and Lucien refused to release my hand. He didn’t flinch, and I looked up at him with concern. If he was too weak to stand, he didn’t need to be fighting any shadows tonight. His exhaustion was still there. I could feel it in the bond. The pain was still there, but at the sound of another hiss, it was also joined by anger. “Enough!” He snapped, and the creature fell so silent I could have forgotten that it was there at all.Lucien took one slow step toward the bed, shadows sliding forward with him like a cloak that had come alive, and I resented that I didn’t want them to touch me. I stayed back, our arms stretching between us as I refused to move. His eyes shot back to me for a split second with confusion, as if wondering why I didn’t move before I looked down, and he followed my gaze. “Do they bother you?” he said calmly
ELARA’S P.O.V.She looked like she’d been lying awake for days, unable to sleep as she waited for him, but I knew that was a lie. She had been perfectly fine just this morning.Plus, her hair was still perfectly arranged, her dress and jewelry had been too carefully picked for someone supposedly panicked with worry. Her eyes widened dramatically as soon as she saw Lucien, her hand flying to her mouth as if she couldn’t believe it.Then she ran, heading right toward us, and I tightened my hold on my mate's hand.“Lucien!” she cried, her voice cracking on his name like she hadn't expected to ever see him again. Before I could even process it, she threw herself at him.Her arms wrapped around his torso, pressing her face into his chest like she belonged there, sobbing as she held him tightly.Lucien’s body went rigid, his grip on my hand loosened, and I felt it.The shift in him, the mask slowly slipping as the pain became too much, as she pushed herself tighter against him.A low grow
ELARA’S P.O.V.The confidence in his voice as he said I was important gave me an extra push of strength, and I sped up, allowing him to guide our speed, moving as fast as he could bear.My mind was moving a mile a minute as I tried to figure out what he meant by that. Was I important because, as his mate, other packs may want to use me against him? Or was I important to him?I lifted my chin. “I needed air, so I went on a run, but I stayed on the pack land. The guards were just too slow to keep up.”For a moment, he looked impressed, but then his jaw clenched. “That doesn’t make it safe!”“No, but right now, nowhere is safe,” I said, trying to sound braver than I felt. Lucien didn’t need me to remind him that Death was still inside of him, watching and waiting for my light to go out.Lucien’s fingers tightened around my wrist. “Humor me then, and slow down. Keep my guards with you. I can’t lose you, Elara.”My mouth went dry. Maybe he had meant that I was important to him.“I’ve nev
ELARA’S P.O.V.Death looked from me to the pond, letting out a low growl of excitement before he suddenly turned back to smoke, melting down to cover the ground.I jumped a step back, not wanting the darkness to touch me, but quickly realized that he had no interest in me as he lined the water's edge. The black pond was so still I could see it reflecting the sky above us. It was unsettling how peaceful it appeared, even though I knew it was made with dark magic. That was Death’s cauldron of souls, and I wanted no part of it.I hated that Lucien was in it, and I hated even more that I couldn't see any sign of him, or any proof that he had even gone underwater. There wasn't a single ripple or bubble in sight. I stood at the shore with my hands clenched so tightly my nails were on the verge of cutting into my palms.I reached for the bond again, but it was still muted, as if the bond itself between our souls was also underwater. My wolf paced restlessly beneath my skin, furious that we
ELARA’S P.O.V.The words hit harder than any threat, settling deep in my gut. If I wouldn’t come back, how could I guarantee Lucien would? They echoed in my head, louder than the screaming souls, louder than the low waves hitting the sand before me. “That’s a lie. He seems just fine in there.” I spat, forcing my gaze away from the shadow and back to Lucien. “Plus, he wouldn’t let that happen.”Lucien didn’t answer right away, and my eyes flicked back to him, seeing his jaw clenched and his eyes squeezed tightly shut. All of his muscles were flexed and coiled. The water surged higher, climbing his thighs as he was pulled further from me. “Elara,” he said finally, and my heart sank at the sound of my name on his lips. Not a warning. Not an order. It almost sounded like a goodbye.“You have to trust me. I’ve done this before. ”My throat burned. “I don’t trust it,” I snapped, jerking my chin toward Death as it hovered at the edge of the pond. My throat tightened as he smiled at me aga
ELARA’S P.O.V.The clearing seemed to brighten around it, somehow making the darkness of the shadow figure before me even more prominent and defined… as if he were real. The mist rising from the black pond thickened, swirling over the water like a storm building before it moved from the water, reaching for Lucien. My wolf pushed forward, hackles raised, ready to fight, but my body refused to listen. My feet were pinned, not by the earth, but by fear. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t even shift. The shadows were holding me prisoner, and I hated it. I searched inside me, reaching for my gift, needing to find the light I had used before, but as Lucien swayed forward, my panic clouded my control. His chest rose and fell in uneven breaths, and I knew whatever had happened to him, he didn’t have too much longer. “Leave him alone!” I growled at the shadow before me. I had shocked him once before with the kiss when he took Lucien’s form, but now he was just darkness, and he wouldn’
