Mira's POV
"Honey, smile for the camera!' my mother said. She'd been watching me rather closely ever since I managed to drag myself back into the great hall.
I still couldn't stop thinking about the intense makeup session between me and my soon to be stepbrother.
Every time I looked at him or our eyes mistakenly met, I blushed a crimson color.
I was both intrigued and riddled with guilt, not because I had let him kiss me and almost had his way with me out in the open but because I wanted him to do it again.
In fact, my wolf was beyond eager for him to mark us and it made me sick to my stomach that I was even thinking of him that way…
I needed to reject him, fast.
"No!" Claudia growled from within me but I ignored her.
"You won't reject him, he belongs to us!" Claudia said again, this time with a firmness and authority to her voice.
I smiled as the photographer took another picture of us and another and another.
It was around midnight when the party began to slowly end.
"Your new step brother is super hot," Zane squealed as I was about to gracefully exit the party too. If grace was even an option.
I frowned at her words and then proceeded to scrunch up my nose in disgust.
Not only did I think so too, I had experienced his hotness first hand and I was feeling guilty as hell. If she'd known what had transpired between us earlier, she'd be disgusted too.
I needed to get out of here to think about what the fuck I was going to do…
"Oh, don't give me that look." She pouted.
"I should be pouring some holy water on you," I said with a deadpan expression.
She chuckled and just then, I watched as Kayden walked past me, without so much as a glance in my direction.
I felt a light blow to the chest at his blatant disregard for me yet I completely understood. It couldn't happen.
We just couldn't, besides I had a boyfriend, one that until now was the only man that had ever gotten to second base with me.
Zane and I talked some more before I gracefully exited the function and went up to my room, not wanting to be subjected to the torture of watching him and the mystery she-wolf be all lovey dovey.
******
The next couple of days, I made it a personal business of mine to avoid him like the plague.
In fact, after the engagement party,I decided to go to Zane's house to stay for three days because that was the amount of time he was meant to spend with my mom before he went to his pack and made preparations for my mom and his wedding and the merging of both packs.
I planned on finally telling my mother today, I couldn't betray her. I needed to let her know what the situation was.
"Are you sure you don't want to stay for dinner?"
Zane asked me one more time as I got into her car.
"Yes, today is Lasagna Thursday, I can't miss it." I said to her,
I loved Zane to death but I was tired of eating cereal and junk day after day. I needed something nourishing. Plus there was the fact that Kayden and his father, Alpha Remy were finally gone which meant I could relax in my own home.
I had tried to talk to my mom the next day about the situation but seeing the love in her eyes had caused me to immediately retreat.
I don’t want to be the reason why that light would get dimmed.
"Alright. I'm going to miss you." She pouted and I chuckled.
She turned on the engine of her car and drove off towards the pack house.
"Thanks again for bringing me home and say goodbye to Cameron for me." I waved at her as she drove off.
I took a deep breath before walking through the entrance of the pack house.
The house was quiet, not even the Beta seemed to be around.
I climbed up the stairs and went straight to my room. I took off my clothes and quickly jumped into the shower but when I put on the water after turning on the heater, it was cold.
I ran out of the bathroom screaming bloody murder.
Had they finished all the hot water? Or perhaps Kayden had invited that she-wolf over……
I pushed the thought away and decided to go to my mom's bathroom to shower.
She had the better bathroom and a huge tub and a jacuzzi.
As soon as I was done, I quickly brushed my teeth and immediately, I stepped into my bedroom but literally screamed when I saw Kayden standing in my room.
My towel loosened and fell off my chest as if on cue and his eyes widened in shock and then proceeded to darken with desire as he approached me.
I was frozen for a second but when he was in front of me, my legs moved faster than before.
I ran into the bathroom quickly before he could reach me and closed the door behind me.
"I'm sorry. I didn't realize you were back…" he started to say but I wasn't having it.
"What are you doing in my room?" I yelled through the door.
"This is your mother's room." He pointed out and I swallowed.
"Right! Fuck," I had totally forgotten that I had decided to come into my mother's bathroom when my shower refused to heat up.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to invade your privacy."
Why was he in my mother's bathroom?
"It's… fine." I said with a strained voice. "Where's my mom?" I asked, my legs still shaking.
"She's in a council meeting."
"I thought you'd be gone by now!" I said through the closed door. “What are you doing here?”
"Yes but there was an emergency meeting your mother had to attend and she asked my dad to wait for a day or so…" he grunted.
He sounded almost like he didn't even want to be talking to me and that hurt me more than it should.
"I see…" I said.
"What are we going to do about this situation?" I asked after a long stretch of silence.
"Nothing, we are to pretend like it never happened." He whispered, his voice commanding and authoritative.
My wolf immediately responded to him.
"But…"
"No buts, Mira. Are you trying to hurt your mother?" He asked, impatience in his voice. “Surely you're not a selfish daughter that would have your needs before hers, right?”
"No…. I Just don't want to lie to her!" I yelled.
I couldn't see his face but I could definitely feel him from behind the bathroom door.
"It's not a lie. It's an omission, one that won't matter since I already rejected you anyway,"
My legs finally gave way and I collapsed to the ground. The force of my fall sent the door flying open and exposing me to him again.
He gasped as he saw me and ran towards me but I pulled away from his touch.
“Don't touch me,” I began to examine my body for bruises acknowledging the pain in my body and in my heart.
What the fuck was wrong with me? This was the right thing to do. But why was it so hard?
“I'm sorry I didn't mean it like that but you understand that it's for the best.” His eyes swept over my form after saying that and I gulped at the look of raw desire in his eyes.
"Fuck," he shook his head, why is it so hard to resist you?!" He grunted and before I knew it, he had me pinned back against the wall, his lips crashing into mine.
"Yes," I moaned as I kissed him back feverishly and in a frenzied motion.
The hurt wedged in my chest earlier, completely vanished as he continued to kiss me crazy.
His lips and his body pressed up against mine did things to my body that made me never want to stop. Claudia was all too happy too as she demanded to be marked.
Just when I was beginning to melt into him, the sound of his phone ringing caused me to immediately jump.
"Fuck!" He cursed.
"It's my father,”
I blinked at him as I came back to my senses. A now reinforced guilt came to lodge its way on my chest.
"Hello, Dad" he picked up the call and hearing his father's voice made me unable to bear being so close to him any longer. “I found it Dad and I'm bringing it…”
I ran out of the room and locked myself in my own room. I threw myself on my bed and screamed into the pillow, feeling too many emotions at once.
How can this be fucking happening to me? Just how???
Why my new stepbrother? Why couldn't I have been paired with someone else, say Cameron for instance?
Why did this happen when my mum had just met the first man she seemed to genuinely care about?
I needed to call her, I needed to speak to her. I picked up my phone and was about to dial her number when my phone buzzed indicating an incoming message.
I tapped on the message and found a message from a private number.
I gasped and nearly dropped my phone when I read the content of the message…
I know what you've done, with your stepbrother, you little slut…
Kayden’s pov“Dad, I didn’t start it, he did. All I wanted was some peace and quiet. I tried to tell him it wasn’t a good idea.”“You absolutely eviscerated that poor guy.”“He deserved worse.”My father raised a brow but didn’t respond to that. “Lucas is still an elder, Kayden. You should hold back some more. Stop tossing people around. What’s gotten into you? I thought you’d be happy for me.”“I am.”“Then what were you doing in a secluded place and why were you involved in a fight?”I couldn’t say anything. We stayed in silence for a while before I sighed.“I’m really sorry dad,” I muttered. And I meant it. Not for the fight. But for causing him trouble on a day that was supposed to be perfect for him.He looked at me, then nodded once. “You’re lucky. Witnesses said Lucas swung first. Said you held back. That’s the only reason this won’t escalate further.”I nodded.“But you need to stay out of trouble. At least for tonight. Can you do that for me?"I smiled slightly and nodded. "
Kayden’s povSince I was done with Mira, I turned away from the garden as I needed to stay alone for a while.I needed to clear my head. The noise of the party was drowning out my thoughts.I didn’t want to control her. I just didn’t want that guy around her. Not Lucas. Not after what he had done to her in the past. And now she hated me for it.I slowly walked with my hands in my pockets as I made my way to the back of the packhouse and went to a small lake where no one would find me.I stood there for a while as the muffled sounds of music bared through the crowds. Then I heard it.A soft rustling of grass. I heard footsteps.I didn’t even need to turn to know who it was. The smell of it hit me before anything else. Thick. Familiar. Arrogant.“Stop hiding, Lucas,” I said loud and clear, not having to turn around to know it was him. “You’ve always been a chicken, don’t start sneaking now.”Then I turned, slowly, and there he was — Lucas, stepping out from behind the trees. His face wa
Mira’s povThe celebration was still in full swing. Music drifted through the air. Laughter and clinking glasses echoed all around. My mother was dancing with Alpha Remy, glowing like a moonlit queen. Jamie was off somewhere, probably sneaking more cupcakes. But I wasn’t smiling. Not anymore.Because standing right in front of me… was Lucas. His face had my heart pounding in my chest as I looked at him with disgust. This was the bastard who had dumped me like I was worth anything. After all I had given to him, he had thrown me aside like a piece of used gum.It had been hard for me to open up to him. I was already having a hard time with Kayden and this bastard showed up to give me hope that he was better.Well, better my ass, he had showed me he was worse. Now he had the guts to show his face before me.“Mira,” he called me as I snapped back to reality.“You have no right to call me that. It’s princess Mira to you and I’ll address you by your title, elder.”He chuckled nervously. “Mi
Mira’s povThe sun kissed over the trees that morning, illuminating the sky in shades of rose and gold. Today was the day. The day of my mother’s wedding. Alpha Freya was marrying Alpha Remy.I stood there by my window, overlooking the pack grounds below, as they steadily filled with life. Flapping flags of gold and white peppered our lands. Flags from near packs billowed too—packs with wolves, moons and foreign symbols I hadn’t ever seen. The guests had come last night but more were still arriving- lined carriages down our long driveway while standing warriors scanned them coming through.Everything inside the packhouse felt like a rush. Maids were rushing up and down hallways, fixing ribbons, flowers, lightning scented candles. The entire place smelt of fresh roses and sweet vanilla. I could hear laughter and music from outside as soft drums played in the courtyard. It was happening.Jamie burst through into my room in her little flower girl dress. Her hair was curling up so it had
Mira’s pov“I can’t say anything to reassure you of my love. It’s not going to work,” he said. “This is… the end. For both of us. For real this time.”I waited there for a while as I got up to leave before the door opened and the tailor came in.“Alright, let’s get you two set up.”“I’ll do mine at another time,” I said with a frown as I headed out of the room.I needed some time alone as I did whenever I was not happy. Why did everything have to be a disaster? Ignoring my feelings for the rest of that day and avoiding Kayden, I had a blank day doing random things.Even when I was happy for my mother and I knew she needed to be happy, I still felt empty at the thought of never having the happy ending I deserved. For the days that showed up leading to the wedding, I moved like a zombie. I tried my best to act normal and smile when called upon, but it wasn’t as easy as I had imagined it to be.On the day before the wedding, I walked through the halls while brushing my fingers at the cu
Kayden’s pov“Kayden,” I said shaking his hand as he nodded.“You’ve got a firm grip there,” he chuckled nervously. “No wonder your pack members keep on praising your strength. Your guards especially.”I nodded and tried to walk around him as he spread his arm to halt me.“You’re free today, yeah?” He asked as I held my breath and tried to not say anything that would piss me off.“I’m kind of busy.”“I know but… we can hang out. I just want to get to know the guy who would soon be the stepbrother to my best friend.”I nodded. “Fine, what do you want to know?”“Just wanted to know if you were free.”“Now I’m not thanks to you.”My words were abrupt and a bit rude but he needed to know that as he looked away from me to see the oncoming maids.“You don’t have to be rude. How about we hang out together?”I shrugged. It didn’t look like I would hate him so I agreed. We went to a balcony to look out amongst the crowds before us. That was when I saw her.Mira stood among the maids, talking a
