Mira's POV
"Honey, smile for the camera!' my mother said. She'd been watching me rather closely ever since I managed to drag myself back into the great hall.
I still couldn't stop thinking about the intense makeup session between me and my soon to be stepbrother.
Every time I looked at him or our eyes mistakenly met, I blushed a crimson color.
I was both intrigued and riddled with guilt, not because I had let him kiss me and almost had his way with me out in the open but because I wanted him to do it again.
In fact, my wolf was beyond eager for him to mark us and it made me sick to my stomach that I was even thinking of him that way…
I needed to reject him, fast.
"No!" Claudia growled from within me but I ignored her.
"You won't reject him, he belongs to us!" Claudia said again, this time with a firmness and authority to her voice.
I smiled as the photographer took another picture of us and another and another.
It was around midnight when the party began to slowly end.
"Your new step brother is super hot," Zane squealed as I was about to gracefully exit the party too. If grace was even an option.
I frowned at her words and then proceeded to scrunch up my nose in disgust.
Not only did I think so too, I had experienced his hotness first hand and I was feeling guilty as hell. If she'd known what had transpired between us earlier, she'd be disgusted too.
I needed to get out of here to think about what the fuck I was going to do…
"Oh, don't give me that look." She pouted.
"I should be pouring some holy water on you," I said with a deadpan expression.
She chuckled and just then, I watched as Kayden walked past me, without so much as a glance in my direction.
I felt a light blow to the chest at his blatant disregard for me yet I completely understood. It couldn't happen.
We just couldn't, besides I had a boyfriend, one that until now was the only man that had ever gotten to second base with me.
Zane and I talked some more before I gracefully exited the function and went up to my room, not wanting to be subjected to the torture of watching him and the mystery she-wolf be all lovey dovey.
******
The next couple of days, I made it a personal business of mine to avoid him like the plague.
In fact, after the engagement party,I decided to go to Zane's house to stay for three days because that was the amount of time he was meant to spend with my mom before he went to his pack and made preparations for my mom and his wedding and the merging of both packs.
I planned on finally telling my mother today, I couldn't betray her. I needed to let her know what the situation was.
"Are you sure you don't want to stay for dinner?"
Zane asked me one more time as I got into her car.
"Yes, today is Lasagna Thursday, I can't miss it." I said to her,
I loved Zane to death but I was tired of eating cereal and junk day after day. I needed something nourishing. Plus there was the fact that Kayden and his father, Alpha Remy were finally gone which meant I could relax in my own home.
I had tried to talk to my mom the next day about the situation but seeing the love in her eyes had caused me to immediately retreat.
I don’t want to be the reason why that light would get dimmed.
"Alright. I'm going to miss you." She pouted and I chuckled.
She turned on the engine of her car and drove off towards the pack house.
"Thanks again for bringing me home and say goodbye to Cameron for me." I waved at her as she drove off.
I took a deep breath before walking through the entrance of the pack house.
The house was quiet, not even the Beta seemed to be around.
I climbed up the stairs and went straight to my room. I took off my clothes and quickly jumped into the shower but when I put on the water after turning on the heater, it was cold.
I ran out of the bathroom screaming bloody murder.
Had they finished all the hot water? Or perhaps Kayden had invited that she-wolf over……
I pushed the thought away and decided to go to my mom's bathroom to shower.
She had the better bathroom and a huge tub and a jacuzzi.
As soon as I was done, I quickly brushed my teeth and immediately, I stepped into my bedroom but literally screamed when I saw Kayden standing in my room.
My towel loosened and fell off my chest as if on cue and his eyes widened in shock and then proceeded to darken with desire as he approached me.
I was frozen for a second but when he was in front of me, my legs moved faster than before.
I ran into the bathroom quickly before he could reach me and closed the door behind me.
"I'm sorry. I didn't realize you were back…" he started to say but I wasn't having it.
"What are you doing in my room?" I yelled through the door.
"This is your mother's room." He pointed out and I swallowed.
"Right! Fuck," I had totally forgotten that I had decided to come into my mother's bathroom when my shower refused to heat up.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to invade your privacy."
Why was he in my mother's bathroom?
"It's… fine." I said with a strained voice. "Where's my mom?" I asked, my legs still shaking.
"She's in a council meeting."
"I thought you'd be gone by now!" I said through the closed door. “What are you doing here?”
"Yes but there was an emergency meeting your mother had to attend and she asked my dad to wait for a day or so…" he grunted.
He sounded almost like he didn't even want to be talking to me and that hurt me more than it should.
"I see…" I said.
"What are we going to do about this situation?" I asked after a long stretch of silence.
"Nothing, we are to pretend like it never happened." He whispered, his voice commanding and authoritative.
My wolf immediately responded to him.
"But…"
"No buts, Mira. Are you trying to hurt your mother?" He asked, impatience in his voice. “Surely you're not a selfish daughter that would have your needs before hers, right?”
"No…. I Just don't want to lie to her!" I yelled.
I couldn't see his face but I could definitely feel him from behind the bathroom door.
"It's not a lie. It's an omission, one that won't matter since I already rejected you anyway,"
My legs finally gave way and I collapsed to the ground. The force of my fall sent the door flying open and exposing me to him again.
He gasped as he saw me and ran towards me but I pulled away from his touch.
“Don't touch me,” I began to examine my body for bruises acknowledging the pain in my body and in my heart.
What the fuck was wrong with me? This was the right thing to do. But why was it so hard?
“I'm sorry I didn't mean it like that but you understand that it's for the best.” His eyes swept over my form after saying that and I gulped at the look of raw desire in his eyes.
"Fuck," he shook his head, why is it so hard to resist you?!" He grunted and before I knew it, he had me pinned back against the wall, his lips crashing into mine.
"Yes," I moaned as I kissed him back feverishly and in a frenzied motion.
The hurt wedged in my chest earlier, completely vanished as he continued to kiss me crazy.
His lips and his body pressed up against mine did things to my body that made me never want to stop. Claudia was all too happy too as she demanded to be marked.
Just when I was beginning to melt into him, the sound of his phone ringing caused me to immediately jump.
"Fuck!" He cursed.
"It's my father,”
I blinked at him as I came back to my senses. A now reinforced guilt came to lodge its way on my chest.
"Hello, Dad" he picked up the call and hearing his father's voice made me unable to bear being so close to him any longer. “I found it Dad and I'm bringing it…”
I ran out of the room and locked myself in my own room. I threw myself on my bed and screamed into the pillow, feeling too many emotions at once.
How can this be fucking happening to me? Just how???
Why my new stepbrother? Why couldn't I have been paired with someone else, say Cameron for instance?
Why did this happen when my mum had just met the first man she seemed to genuinely care about?
I needed to call her, I needed to speak to her. I picked up my phone and was about to dial her number when my phone buzzed indicating an incoming message.
I tapped on the message and found a message from a private number.
I gasped and nearly dropped my phone when I read the content of the message…
I know what you've done, with your stepbrother, you little slut…
Kayden’s povI got out of my room and walked through the hallways as the morning sun slanted through the hallways windows.Just when I got to the dinner table, I saw Jamie sitting at the table by herself. She was eating there with her two friends as they seemed to be playing with their foods.“Hey,” I said to her.She glanced up, milk spilling out the side of her mouth. “Morning.” Her voice was garbled. She reached for her sleeve and wiped.I leaned against the chair. “Where’s Mira?”“Uh… no idea. Haven’t seen her since yesterday.”"Not at all?""Nope." She popped the 'p' and glanced at her friends who just kept staring into their bowls. Something in her voice bugged me. Mira wasn’t one to disappear without a word, even if it was just a door slam or some pissy muttering on her way out. This silence was not normal.I wanted to ask for more details when I heard someone behind me.“Kayden!”I turned to see one of the warriors from alpha freya’s pack coming close to me.He was a big man,
Mira’s povHe smirked. “Not my kind of scene.” His eyes flicked back to me. “Be safe.”There was a pause… just a second too long and then I nodded without saying anything.“We will. Let’s go before the driver leaves without us.”As we went to the door, Kim giggled about how cute Kayden was but I ignored that.We made for the door, the horn sounding again. As we stepped outside, I couldn’t get the feeling out of my mind that Kayden was watching us from the window in the hallway.I refused to look back as we got into the car and the driver drove us to where we needed to go.In the car only Kim and Zane talked while also singing to the songs on the radio. They tried to coerce me into joining them but my mind was filled with the pain of what I was going through. Yeah, I couldn’t think of anything but where I was going to get out a hundred thousand dollars to pay the strange person.Soon we got to the venue and we got out.Zane came to stand before Kim and I as she looked at our dressing.
Mira’s povMy mouth went dry. I threw the phone on my mattress and walked in a tight, dizzy little circle, trying to breathe. The window was open just a bit and the freezing air came over me but it wasn’t enough air.I had to keep telling myself, it’s nothing. It’s nothing. That if I ignore it, it would go away. But who was I kidding. For months now I had been blackmailed and now it was just too apparent that this person would not stop until they destroyed me.At that moment, my phone rang.I literally jumped. My heart almost punched through my ribs. The same unknown number.I didn’t want to pick up. I really, really didn’t. But my thumb moved before I could stop it.I picked up the phone. “Hello?”Nothing at first, just a low static buzz, like at the end of a record. Then I heard a voice—or something like one.It wasn’t male. It wasn’t female. It was… wrong. Flat. Robotic.Like one of those creepy voice changers you see in movies.“Till sunrise,” it said. “Just pay the money… or you
Mira’s povThe next day felt… heavy. Almost like I had a lot of weight pressing me down.Hadn’t even slept well after all those messages. The text was still sitting there on my phone, glowing in my mind even when the screen was black.I was in Zane’s room, sitting cross-legged on her worn-out gray couch, pretending to listen while she and Kim complained about how they’d gotten chewed out by their parents for coming home late.“I swear, my mom nearly ripped the door off when I got home,” Zane said, falling back against the cushions like the memory alone was exhausting her. “She had that look—you know the one—like she was gonna give me the whole ‘I’m not mad, just disappointed’ speech, but nope. Straight to yelling.”I smirked weakly even when my mind wasn’t even there.“Oh and my dad,” she continued. “My dad wasn’t even happy. He just yelled as well. So yeah. Double yelling. Ten out of ten would not recommend it.”Kim laughed, but there was no real joy in it. She was sitting on the fl
Mira’s povI could feel his hand around my wrist before I’d even fully stepped past the dining table.“Let go of me,” I said, not wanting to bring attention to us.But Kayden being Kayden refused to do that.He looked around and saw no one was looking as he got even closer to me. “They’re not here.” He finally spoke again when he must have realized I wasn’t going to make a dash for it despite having had plenty of time already.I looked at him. “I don’t care. I don’t have to be here with you.”“I need to know now,” he said, voice high and panicked. “Where were you tonight?”I almost laughed, if only there were anything remotely amusing about his expression. “I went to a party.”“You were too seductive for that.”I scoffed, pulling my arm free. “Too seductive? Seriously? What are you, the fashion police of bad excuses? And it’s none of your business.”“What do you mean it’s none of my business. You’re my…”“I’m nothing to you,” I growled at him. I then turned and started walking away
Mira’s pov“Good evening,” was all I could say as I walked towards them.My stepfather looked up from the head of the table—Alpha posture, shoulders straight, jaw set. “Mira,” he said, as if my name were a greeting and an order to get in my seat already. My mother flashed me a smile.“I…” I waved vaguely toward the hallways. They knew where I’d been. they didn’t want me late anyway. I slipped into the chair beside Kayden directly across from Jamie and wished instantly that I’d chosen someplace elseKayden was chewing slowly, eyes flicking at me like I’d interrupted his peaceful dinner. Jamie smirked, not that I could tell who she meant it for – me or just her face. Either way, I didn’t look at her and concentrated on dishing soup into my own bowl.“So,” my mother began cutting through the quiet clinking of silver on porcelain. “How are things with your new friend?”I looked up, halfway through the act of bringing a spoonful of cereal to my mouth. “Kim? Oh, um. She’s,” I shrugged best
