Lyra's POV:

Maya had not moved from where I had settled her against my chest and I had not moved either and the morning was doing what mornings did which was continue regardless of whether anyone inside a particular dorm room was participating in it.

Her breathing had evened out slightly. Not sleep. Just rest. The particular quality of a body that had been held taut for too long finally releasing some of the tension because it had been given somewhere safe to put it down.

  • Mated to My Rival Step Brother   216. Scared to Say Anything

Maya's POV:I stepped into the hallway. The smell hit me first.Warm. Familiar. Something cooking with butter, maybe a hint of herbs.Lyra.Of course.I followed it into the kitchen. She stood by the stove, back to me, moving easily like she always did. One hand held a pan, the other flipping something with a practiced motion.Like nothing had happened.Like she hadn’t just…I leaned against the doorway.“You cook like that every morning and I’m just now realizing it?”She didn’t turn around immediately.“I cook like this when someone needs to be fed properly,” she said. “You’ve been eating like a lost wolf lately.”I huffed. “I am a wolf.”“Not an excuse.”That made me smile before I could stop it.She finally glanced over her shoulder. Her eyes flicked over me quickly.“Feeling better?”I hesitated.“Yeah,” I said. “Actually… yeah.”Her gaze lingered for a second longer. Then she nodded, turning back to the stove. “Good.”That was it.Good.Like she hadn’t just changed everything.I

  • Mated to My Rival Step Brother   215. Act Normal

Maya's POV:I swallowed.I nodded.I didn’t trust myself to say anything else. She took my hand first.Carefully.Like it meant something. Then she lifted it slightly and pressed her lips against my palm.My fingers twitched. It was softer here, but still warm, still… grounding. She kissed across my knuckles. Then the back of my hand.My breathing wasn’t steady anymore.I hated that she could do this to me so easily.Or maybe I didn’t hate it.Maybe that was the problem. She let my hand rest back on the bed and moved down.I felt her shift. Then her hands on my thigh.Even through the fabric, the warmth was there.“Lyra…” I started.“It’s okay,” she said. “Trust me.”I nodded. My heart was racing now.Her lips touched my thigh.I sucked in a breath. That one felt different.Stronger.It sent something through me that made my grip on the sheet tighten again. She didn’t rush. She never rushed.Knees next. Then calves. Each touch carried that same strange warmth, easing tension I hadn’t

  • Mated to My Rival Step Brother   214. Healing With Lips

Maya's POV:For a moment I didn’t move. Not because I didn’t want to.Because I couldn’t.The pain was still there. It lived along my backbone like something coiled too tight, spreading into my ribs every time I even thought about shifting. It felt worse in the mornings, like my body forgot how to exist overnight and had to relearn everything the hard way.I exhaled slowly and tried to turn.Bad idea.A sharp pull shot through my side and I froze instantly, gripping the bedsheet.“Ah… damn it.”Even whispering hurt a little. Every movement felt like I was testing limits I didn’t understand.Lyra's warmth was still there. “Still hurting?”“Just a little,” I said.It was a lie. A weak one."Lol, why do you need to lie in my presence." I shrugged, then immediately regretted it. “What do you want me to say? That it feels like my ribs are trying to break me from the inside?”She didn’t laugh. That made me look at her.Lyra was watching me with that same quiet expression when she is serio

  • Mated to My Rival Step Brother   213. The Weight of Wanting

Maya's POV:I looked at her face.At the calm in it. The particular kind of calm that was not the absence of feeling but the presence of a decision already made. She had decided something about me and she had decided it in the full knowledge that there were gaps in the information and she had decided it anyway.I thought about all the things sitting in those gaps. The number with no name. The border assignments. The rogue wolf with the yellow eyes. The paper folded in my jacket pocket. My uncle's long game and my position inside it and the things I did in the dark of early mornings that I scrubbed off in functional showers so that nobody could see them on my skin. She was looking at me and her eyes were warm and the hand on my back was steady. The thing in my chest pressed all the way up.I had meant to not do this.I had a very clear internal agreement with myself about not doing this. The agreement had been in place for several weeks and had survived multiple close calls including t

  • Mated to My Rival Step Brother   212. She Knows Enough

Maya's POV:I knew this the way I knew the things I did not want to know, clearly and completely and without any of the useful fog that sometimes cushioned difficult knowledge. It had arrived some time ago and I had looked at it and looked at all the reasons to keep it where it was and filed it under things that were true and also things that could not be handed over. She was Silver. I was Thorne. Yeah, not a Thorne for real as well. Biologically, I was also the niece of the rogue Alpha who was currently conducting operations that crossed Silver territory. Which was more complicated. I was in the middle of a life that had things in it she did not know about and things in it that could look, from certain angles, like exactly the kind of thing that would end a friendship if the friendship knew about them. She deserved someone whose life was not a set of concentric complications. The cloth stilled against my back."Maya.""Mm.""You have gone very quiet.""I am often quiet.""You are. Bu

  • Mated to My Rival Step Brother   211. A Silent Confession

Maya's POV:She was looking at me with that question still sitting in her eyes and I had not answered it and she was not pushing for the answer and somehow that was worse than if she had pushed.May I continue further? The words were still warm in the air between us.I looked at my hands in my lap.The honest answer was yes. The complicated answer was also yes. The answer that lived underneath both of those, the one I had been carefully not looking at directly for several weeks now, was something else entirely and much harder to hold without examining."Okay," I said. She tilted her head slightly. "Okay yes or okay you are thinking about it.""Okay yes."She looked at me for one moment and then she said "turn around" in the same quiet practical tone she had used for everything this morning and I turned and faced the headboard and I could feel her behind me settling her weight on the bed.I heard the cloth in the water. The small sound of it being wrung out. Then her hands were at the

Blake’s POV:Late Monday night made the academy feel hollow. The halls were quieter than usual, but not peaceful. Lights were dimmed. Shadows clung to corners like they were listening. Alex's POV:Monday evening crept into the academy like a warning that refused to announce itself. The sky outside the tall windows darkened slowly. Lanterns lit the corridors one by one. Blake's POV:Tuesday early time settled over the academy like a held breath. The halls were quieter than they should have been. Alex's POV:The council chamber felt heavier at night. The stone walls did not change, but the silence did. It pressed closer, like it wanted answers carved into the air. The torches along the walls burned low, their light steady and unforgiving. Every symbol carved into the stone looked sharper th
