The girls were led off the horses and taken through a series of cavernous, echoing hallways.

The interior was as bleak as the exterior. The walls were bare, dark stone, the floors were cold, and the only light came from torches set high in iron sconces, casting long, dancing shadows that seemed to writhe and grasp. There were no tapestries, no rugs, no furniture beyond the occasional severe looking stone bench. It felt less like a home and more like the inside of a mountain.

  • Mated to the Alpha King   125 - Hurt Worse

Winter looked across the clearing to where Ezekiel stood. His posture was tense, alert, but when he glanced her direction his expression softened. Just for a second. Then the mask came back. "He's still learning how to feel things," Winter said quietly. "Twenty two years of the curse suppressing emotions. It doesn't just disappear overnight." "But it did disappear. Because of you." Alice's voice held wonder. "You broke an impossible curse through sheer stubbornness and love. That's actually incredible." "Morwenna designed it that way. The curse, I mean." Winter turned the dried meat over in her hands. "She could have made it permanent. But she left a way out. Hope disguised as revenge." "Your grandmother was either brilliant or cruel." "Both." Winter thought about the witch she'd never met. The woman whose curse had shaped Ezekiel's entire adult life. Whose blood ran in Winter's veins. "She lost everything in the massacre. Her family. Her people. Her life. And with her last breat

  • Mated to the Alpha King   124 - The Witch Girl

The attack came on the second night.Winter was asleep when Jax burst through the door. No knock. No warning. Just sudden noise and Ezekiel rolling out of bed already halfway shifted."We need to leave." Jax's face was grim in the torchlight he carried. "Now. They're coming from three directions."Winter's brain struggled to catch up. She'd been dreaming about shadows and white hair and her father's face. "Who's coming?""Everyone." Jax started grabbing supplies from around the room. Weapons. A pack. "Griselda sent word to every disgruntled pack within two hundred miles. Told them the Alpha King was compromised by witch magic. That killing you would break the spell and restore him."Ezekiel's shift reversed. His voice came out rough. "How many?""At least forty wolves. Maybe more." Jax threw the pack at Ezekiel. "And that's just the ones I counted. There could be others circling."Winter's hands shook as she pulled on her boots. Her shoulder still ached from the fight with Rasmus but

  • Mated to the Alpha King   123 - Hostile Alphas

Winter woke to voices arguing. Her shoulder throbbed and her mouth tasted like old copper. The room was darker than before. Evening probably, based on the dim light filtering through the single window. Ezekiel wasn't in bed. He was standing near the door speaking in low tones with Jax. Both looked tense. Winter sat up slowly. Vex raised his head from the corner and made a questioning sound. The movement caught Ezekiel's attention. "You're awake." He crossed the room in three strides. "How do you feel?" "Like I fought a wolf and barely won." Winter touched her bandaged shoulder experimentally. "What's happening?" Jax answered before Ezekiel could. "Rasmus and about fifteen wolves left. Packed up and headed east toward the minor territories." "Because of me." Winter's stomach sank. "Because they're cowards who can't adapt to change," Ezekiel corrected. "Good riddance." "Fifteen wolves is a significant loss," Jax said carefully. "And they're spreading word to other packs. About t

  • Mated to the Alpha King   122 - Thinking Too Loud

Jax pushed through the crowd with a first aid kit. He went straight to Winter and started examining her shoulder without asking permission. "Deep but not terrible. You'll need stitches." "Later." Winter was watching the crowd. Trying to gauge their reaction. "Now." Jax's tone left no room for argument. "Before you bleed all over the courtyard and pass out dramatically." Ezekiel moved closer to Winter. His hand found the small of her back. The touch was possessive but also grounding. "Let Jax work. I'll watch them." Winter nodded and let Jax guide her toward a bench near the gate. Vex followed and settled at her feet. The beast's presence was comforting. Jax cleaned the wound with quick efficient movements. "Rasmus fights dirty. Going for the throat on a first strike is excessive." "He wanted to prove I was weak." Winter hissed as Jax applied antiseptic. "Did I prove otherwise?" "You proved you're dangerous." Jax started stitching. "Whether that makes them respect you or fear yo

  • Mated to the Alpha King   121 - Not Luck

Rasmus recovered fast. He feinted left then went right. Winter's shadows moved to intercept but he was already past them. His clawed hand caught her shoulder and spun her around. Pain bloomed hot and immediate. Winter gasped and reacted without thinking. Shadows exploded outward from her body in all directions. Rasmus was thrown back. He hit the ground and rolled, coming up in a crouch. Blood dripped from his arm where the shadow explosion had caught him. They stared at each other across the courtyard. Both breathing hard. Both bleeding. "Not bad for a witch." Rasmus's grin was all teeth. "But you're still just playing with darkness. I'm a warrior." He shifted fully this time. The transformation was brutal. Bones breaking and reforming. Skin splitting to make room for fur. Within seconds, Rasmus stood on four legs, a massive grey wolf with yellow eyes fixed on Winter. The crowd's energy spiked. This was what they wanted. A real fight between wolf and witch. Winter felt her own

  • Mated to the Alpha King   120 - Scared?

Rasmus didn't attack immediately. That surprised Winter. She'd expected violence the moment Ezekiel challenged the pack's authority. Instead, Rasmus circled them slowly, his eyes calculating."You say she fights at your side," Rasmus said. His voice carried to the watching crowd. "Prove it. Let's see what this witch can actually do."Ezekiel's growl vibrated through Winter's hand. "This isn't a performance.""No. It's a test." Rasmus stopped circling. "You claim she's powerful enough to stand beside the Alpha King. Show us. Or admit you're keeping her for softer reasons and we all know you've gone weak."The crowd's energy shifted again. Winter could feel their attention sharpening. They wanted to see blood. Wanted proof that she was worth the disruption her presence caused."Don't." Ezekiel's voice had gone quiet. The dangerous kind of quiet. "Don't push this.""I'm not pushing anything. I'm asking a reasonable question." Rasmus's smile didn't reach his eyes. "If she's truly your eq

The silence he left behind was louder than a scream. Winter sat frozen on the hard wooden chair, her entire being vibrating with the aftershocks of his presence. • Mated to the Alpha King   14 - Unexpected

This must be Elspeth, Winter thought, recalling the name from Jax's earlier comment. She had served the Citadel for a long time, and her loyalty was to the Alpha King alone. The woman’s eyes, the color of slate, flickered over Winter once. It wasn’t a glance; it was a judgment. It was a look that
