he first scream came just before midnight.

It sliced through Shadowridge like a blade, sharp and sudden, jolting wolves from sleep and snapping guards to attention.

Aria was already awake.

She sat up instantly, the bond flaring hot and urgent in her chest.

“South tower,” she said.

Varek was already moving, pulling on his boots. “You felt it too.”

They burst into the corridor together, joining a rush of warriors pouring toward the southern battlements. Torches flared to life as alarms echoed through the fortress.

By the time they reached the tower, Lyra Nightfall was already there, blade drawn, eyes scanning the darkness beyond the walls.

“Report,” Varek ordered.

“No breach,” Lyra replied. “But someone screamed from inside the pack territory.”

“That wasn’t fear,” Aria said quietly, gripping the stone railing. “That was pain.”

A moment later, Finn Ashwalker sprinted up the stairs, breathing hard.

“Found the source,” he said. “It’s Tarin—one of the outer patrol runners. He collapsed near

The unease began long before anyone could name it.Aria felt it while walking the eastern corridor, a sudden tightening in her chest as if the bond itself had drawn a sharp breath. She slowed, fingers brushing the stone wall.“Something’s wrong,” she said quietly.Varek stopped beside her immediately. “Inside the pack?”She nodded. “Yes. Not an attack. Something… subtle.”That was more dangerous than claws at the gate. Before either of them could speak again, hurried footsteps approached. Finn Ashwalker appeared from the stairwell, his usual careless grin nowhere in sight.“Good. I was looking for you both,” he said. “Patrol schedules don’t match the Alpha’s orders. Someone’s been adjusting rotations.”Almost on cue, Lyra Nightfall emerged from the opposite corridor, sword already strapped to her side.“And one of the lower gates was loosened,” she added. “Just enough to cause confusion later.”Varek’s expression hardened. “Someone wants us to turn on each other.”Aria exhaled slowly.

Shadowridge breathed uneasily. The fortress was awake long before sunrise, not with panic, but with preparation. Torches burned along the stone corridors. Footsteps echoed. Wolves moved with purpose instead of fear.Aria noticed everything. She stood on the upper walkway overlooking the inner courtyard, arms folded loosely as she observed the pack below. Warriors rotated training shifts. Scouts checked weapons. Healers organized supplies beneath the eastern archway. No chaos.Just readiness.“You watch like you’re memorizing us,” a voice said nearby.Aria turned to find Elder Maelis, her silver hair braided tightly down her back, sharp eyes softened by curiosity rather than judgment.“I am,” Aria replied honestly. “If I’m going to help lead them, I need to know them.”Maelis nodded approvingly. “Most Lunas speak first. You observe.”Aria smiled faintly. “Talking makes me tired.”The elder chuckled. “Then you are exactly what this pack needs.”THE TRAINING YARDSteel clashed against st

The night after Aria’s speech did not rest easy.Shadowridge slept, but its borders did not.Torches burned along the walls, casting long, restless shadows across the stone. Wolves patrolled in rotating shifts, senses sharpened, ears tuned to every whisper of wind through the trees.Aria lay awake beside Varek, staring at the ceiling.Sleep brushed her thoughts but refused to stay. Every time she closed her eyes, she felt it—the faint tug at the bond, like distant claws scraping against something sacred.“You feel it too,” she murmured.Varek didn’t open his eyes, but his arm tightened slightly around her. “Yes.”They lay in silence for a moment.“The Crimson Howl is closer than they want us to believe,” Aria said quietly.Varek finally turned his head, studying her in the dim light. “You’re not afraid.”She considered that. “I am,” she admitted. “But fear isn’t leading me anymore.”A slow smile touched his lips. “That’s when power settles.”She sighed softly. “I don’t want power.”“I

Dawn came slowly over Shadowridge. The sky shifted from deep indigo to pale silver, the moon reluctantly yielding its throne to the rising sun. Wolves gathered in the courtyard below—hundreds of them—warriors, hunters, healers, elders, and younglings standing shoulder to shoulder. They were quiet.Waiting.Aria stood at the edge of the balcony overlooking them, her fingers curled tightly around the stone railing. Her heartbeat thundered in her ears, loud enough she wondered if the entire pack could hear it.Behind her, Varek watched in silence. She felt him before she heard him—his steady presence anchoring her spiraling thoughts. The bond between them hummed softly, reassuring, grounding.“You don’t have to be perfect,” Varek said gently. “You just have to be honest.”She nodded, though her throat felt tight.“I’ve never liked speaking in front of people,” she admitted. “I prefer… observing.”A corner of his mouth lifted. “Funny. They already see you as their Luna.”Aria let out a so

The return to Shadowridge was anything but peaceful.Wolves rushed through the gates in full alert, guards sprinting across the battlements, the warning horns echoing through the fortress like thunder. Word of the Crimson Howl ambush had traveled faster than Varek expected. As soon as Varek, Aria, and Caelan crossed the border, warriors closed ranks around them, forming a protective escort. Aria could feel the tension—sharp, vibrating, heavy—as if the air itself sensed the war approaching.Varek never loosened his grip on her hand. Not once.Even with blood on his arm, even with his jaw tight and eyes burning with fury, he kept her close, guiding her through the chaos with a protectiveness that pulsed through the bond like a heartbeat.Inside the main hall, the high council was already waiting.Elder Korran jumped to his feet. “What is he doing here?” he snapped, pointing at Caelan as if the Moonbreaker Alpha carried a plague.Caelan’s lip curled. “Nice to see you too, Korran.”“We we
