Sirella’s pov

I helped him to sit upright as he twisted his face in pain.

“Are you okay?” I asked as he shook his head.

“It’s nothing.”

At first I listened to the crackling fire and the heavy breathing he put out before deciding that his bravery could lead us all to death.

“Yeah I’m not doing this,” I sighed as I grabbed his shirt before he held my wrist. “Let me go. I need to see what is going on with you.”

“It’s just a few scratches. Let it go,” he said as I shook my head.

“Please… let me see it,” I said as we stared at each other for a while before he softened and let me go.

I pulled off his shirt with ease as I saw so many deep cuts and bruises around his chest and arms. His sides were bleeding and I could see he had done a poor work of patching it with some cloth that had turned dark red.

“What are you thinking?” I asked in shock. “Do you want to die?”

I then rushed to get a bowl of clean water and a clean cloth before sitting beside him.

“You should have said something to me. I

Authors povThe morning light hit through the window as Sirella woke up to the light. She yawned and looked around at the still and silent atmosphere. She raised herself upwards with slow care. She then got up and headed to Kieran’s room to see if he was okay. For a moment she simply looked at him. The bashes he had taken on the last battle were all swathed in bandages but now there was a calmness in his face that made her smile.‘I should chop some wood,’ she thought. ‘We’ll need it for the fire.’She dressed quickly and yanked the axe from beside the door. The forest was wet with morning mist and a loud chorus of birds singing in the sunrise.Sirella walked straight to the forest as she got deeper before stopping to see the piles of wood and she knew she would work with the ones here. She went to the pile of felled logs at the far end of the clearing and, lifting one up by a practised twist of her impressive arms, carried it over to the chopping block before swinging her axe down on

Authors povThe afternoon sun painted the sky orange as, side by side, Sirella and Kieran made their way home to the small hut nestled deep within the woods. The scent of pine mingled with rich earth filled the air and for company they had only each other’s presence and that of their soft footfalls upon the loamy ground. In her arms she carried a basket brimful of freshly picked herbs she had picked after chopping woods. With great care Kieran walked by her side so as not to jolt any still healing wound."You should rest when we get back," Sirella said, glancing at him. "Your wounds still need time."Kieran smirked. "I’m fine. You worry too much."She rolled her eyes but smiled. "Someone has to." They reached the hut, its wooden walls warm from the day’s sun. She pushed open the door and entered as she placed the basket on the table.“Why don’t you sit let me go through your wounds?”“Yes, healer,” he said in a mocking way as she rolled her eyes. She sat by his side and peeled the b

Sirella’s povKieran lay beside me that night after we had just finished with our sex session. The crackling of the fire in the hearth warned me up with his hot body as I smiled. My heart was pounding in a good way. I turned to look at him as I noticed him staring at the ceiling.“Are you… okay?” I asked in a gentle voice as he turned to me.The coldness in his eyes hurt me but this was our first time together. Maybe it was how it was for someone like him.“Let’s just get some sleep,” he said. “I’m tired and I’m still healing.”At first his words hurt. I hoped for… more. Something softer, something that might make my heart speed up again. But he only shut his eyes. Like that was all there was to it.I took a deep breath and said yes, even though he couldn't see me. I turned my back to him as I faced another place, pulling the covers to my shoulder and chin. The sting in my heart receded slowly under exhaustion as I closed my eyes and fell asleep.***I opened my eyes and was standin

Kieran's POVThe smell of food filled my small hut as Sirella and I ate breakfast. She sat across from me with bright excited eyes and a small smile on her lips. My chest kept tightening every so often when our hands brushed.I thought of yesterday when we had sax and wondered if it was real. I could feel how I was falling deeper and deeper for her and a thought filled me up.What if it wasn’t real. What if it was just her powers? I tried to remind myself that she doesn’t love me and she had just used me for sex.Everything that moved within me warned me to be careful but I didn’t know why to believe.I’d heard the stories. Sirella’s kind could put emotions in people—love, lust—with a single touch. Was that what this was? Had I been caught in her web like a thousand men before me? Or was this true and I was just being paranoid?“You’re quiet.” Sirella tilted her head. “What’s going through your head?”I shoved another bite of food into my mouth. “Just hungry.”She laughed, the sound l

Kieran's POVI was laying on the cold ground, my chest still rising and falling fast from the workout. Afternoon sunlight filtered through the leaves above me and cast golden stripes across the forest floor. My muscles ached… but it was that good kind of ache that told you you’re still alive.I liked it. I touched my wounds and ripped off the bandages there. I was whole again. No more wounds.I stretched my arms and flexed my muscles. I was okay. No trouble there.I thought of going back to the hut to meet with sirella but thought of how I was still feeling about her. I was still unsure of my relationship with her. Then I heard something.A noise came from the underbrush, too loud and it didn’t sound like it had come from the forest animals.I froze and held my breath, listening.Another sound came as I swiveled my head to the left. It was the unmistakable crisp crunch of a boot on leaves. Someone was running through the woods. But who?My body froze and I rolled onto my knees still

Kieran's POVThe bodies laid at my feet, their blood seeping warmly into the dry earth of the forest floor. I crouched down and wiped my knife clean on the cool green grass, already thinking. Can't leave them here. Can't burn them — smoke would bring more. It would be like a signal drawing them close to me.I pulled the first killer along by his feet, bumping him over the roots in the trees. My side was on fire from where he had sliced me with his blade, but I didn't care. The pain meant nothing. It seemed like an eternity later when I came to the edge of the cliffs, a straight fall into shadow beneath me. I threw them over, one after another, until they vanished in thin air.Their weapons I kept. Knives, daggers, that strange little spear they'd used to kill themselves. I turned them over in my hands, looking for markings. Nothing.Of course.Salvatore wasn't stupid. He wouldn't have left any evidence behind.I sheathed the knives in my belt and turned to go back to the hut. The sun

Kieran's POVWe laid together on top of the bed, looking up at the wooden ceiling. Designs of new light traveled over the uneven slabs, and I thought how odd it was—just to be alive with each other."Do you ever think about what you actually want?" I said.“I don’t get?”“Do you ever think about what we’ll do… after? I mean like… after all this. If we win.” I gestured vaguely upward. “No, you tell me first,” she said, propping herself up on one elbow. “What does a perfect life look to Kieran?”I kept my eyes on the wood of the ceiling and focused on the grain in a particular knot. “Small house,” I said slowly. “Near mountains. No one bothering me. Good weapons.” I shrugged. “Better food.”She laughed. "That's it? No pack? No family?" I shrugged. "Hadn't thought that far."“Let me guess - you’d sit out on the porch and glare at anyone who came near you?”“Damn straight.”She flopped back down, still giggling. "Mine's different." "Yeah?" “I want a big garden,” she said, her eyes tr

Kieran's POVThe sun crested the mountaintop and beat down as we entered the small clearing in the forest. Sirella shifted her backpack she had carried and dropped it onto the ground and readied her staff, twirling it in her hand. “We don’t want to make any hasty decisions,” she cautioned.I took my own staff from the weapon rack by the corner close to the axe. “Three days isn’t much to determine some kind of decision but we need to make sure we are ready.” “Then get ready to make the most of it.” She settled into a fighting stance. “Attack me.”I swung first—testing her strength. She blocked easily, the wood cracking loud in the quiet forest. “You've gotten better,” I noted, circling her.She smirked. "Had a good teacher." Another swing. Another block. This time she countered fast, nearly catching my ribs. I barely dodged her but smiled."Numbers," I managed to wheeze, blocking another blow from Sirella as I spoke. "Donovan has numbers. We have… what? Just us?"Sirella faked a th

Donovan’s povI walked into my throne room that morning. The heavy doors opened as I approached, and a slant of the coming winter sun crossed before me to lay its brightness on the far wall. I looked in that direction without interest or pleasure.Three generals were drawn up there, waiting.“Good morning, Alpha,” they all bowed and said.I walked slowly with my boots tapping on the marble floor. I reached my seat and sat down on my black throne and kept one leg over the other.“Well?” I said, looking at the man to the far left. “Report.”One of my generals, a tall guy with a scar across his chin, stepped forward to speak. “We’ve reached battlefield contact, Alpha. We’ve established our camps. The troops are prepared.”I nodded. “And Salvatore?”“We haven’t seen him yet,” another general said. “But reports say he is close. They are setting their own camps as well.”“Setting camps,” I scoffed. “He might as well be laying his deathbed because I’ll make sure this isn’t like before. I’ll

Sirella’s povI woke up that morning with a burdened heart. My chest felt constricted and my hands were icy, though it wasn’t from the chill. I just had so much on my mind.I wanted so much to talk to Kieran at least once before he would get to the war and start fighting. Already I was missing him, I just needed to hold him even if it was just for a few seconds. He was the only one who could make me feel okay. At least while all this war was going on, I just wanted to know how to go through this tough time without even thinking of the sad times we were going through.I strolled the room, the world beyond the door was hushed, unnaturally so.Something would happen, I could feel it. Deep in my bones I knew something heavy was about to happen. I didn’t know what but I knew that it would be something big.I couldn’t stop the war, but I could be able to help in the little way I could.I looked out of my window to see so many warriors still leaving for the war with Donovan and his son Dami

Authors povThe march had begun.Wolves padded through the forest in a silent train, barely stirring the leaves as they traveled single-file behind their Alpha, Salvatore. The war was upon them. Hot breath streamed from their nostrils making white puffs that hung in the stagnant air. No one spoke, their thoughts too occupied with what was coming.Salvatore was proud of this movement. Minus the last time he had attacked, this would be an official battle that would drive those idiots to the edge and he would have the chance to take them down. He smiled within himself as he knew that there was no use in lying to himself. He would make sure they regretted coming to him for anything. He would destroy them. But Kieran had other plans. He stopped walking and dropped back until he was near the rear of the group. Then he walked up to Salvatore, his voice low.“Alpha, I have to leave. There’s something important I need to do.”Salvatore turned, his eyes narrow slits. He couldn’t believe that h

Kieran’s POVThe cheers in the war room were still ringing in my ears. My face stayed neutral, but inside, I felt sick. They had no idea.None of them did.Not Salvatore. Not his trusted generals. And yet they all clapped for me, thinking I was one of them.I stared at the map again, the valley, the forest… the places I had just mentioned.I was marking death zones — but not for the people they thought.Everything I said in that room would help my allies, not Salvatore’s army.“Excellent idea,” Salvatore said with a slight smirk, standing and clapping my shoulder. “You’re sharp, Kieran. You remind me of myself when I was younger.”I forced a smile.I wanted to punch him.But not yet.Later that NightThe packhouse was quiet, except for the guards at the doors and the distant hoot of an owl. I moved quietly down the hallway, my footsteps light on the stone floors. My room was dark when I entered, just how I liked it. But I didn’t rest. I couldn’t. Not with the war coming.I sat at my d

Authors povThe generals slapped Kieran on the back.Warriors grinned and shouted his name. But Kieran only smiled a little.Inside, he had plans of his own.He wasn’t really fighting for Salvatore. He was just humoring him.Everyone went on to talk but said nothing important.Meanwhile, in Donovan’s territory...Inside Donovan’s war room, the tension was palpable. There was a large map on the wall.Candles were burning.Donovan sat at the head of the table, his arms crossed.Beside him stood his son, Damien. The war Generals, strong wolves with cold eyes, were around them.“Let’s begin.” Donovan said. One of the generals opened a scroll.“My Alpha,” he said, bowing, “the spies have all returned.“And what did they discover?” Donovan asked quietly. The general pointed at the map.“They found Salvatore’s traps in the forest. They found guards by the river. But they also found a weak spot.”“A weak spot?” Donovan asked, leaning forward.“Yes, here,” the general said and he pointed to

Kieran’s povI snuck out of the barn, as silent as I possibly can as I made my way walking and slightly jogging.I got to the edge of the pack and zipped away with my super speed. The trees blurred by as I moved without holding back.I had to get out of Donovan's land and fast. I ran, and ran until I found myself at the borderlands between my pack's territory.I didn’t stop there either. I kept moving until I saw an old broken-down building far ahead. It was dark and there were no people around, perfect. As I ran, I got a call from someone as I halted and listened to the call. The allies I had sent messages to were at the building waiting for me. Good.I then walked up to the building and I noticed a couple of shadowy figures standing at.They were not moving, their gaze anchored to the shadows.I approached them with stealthy steps. They saw me and relaxed a little. “You made it,” one of them said.“Yeah,” I panted. “I’m here.”“And no one saw you?”“No,” I said. “I’ve been careful.

Sirella’s povI could feel their eyes on me all throughout the day as I got out of my room after having my bath. I knew some of the guards watched and followed me and I knew who had sent them.Even when I went to my room, sometimes I’d hear footsteps outside.I knew they had been sent by Donovan. The trust was gone. He didn't believe me anymore. And he wanted to follow me, to see if I made a mistake.I kept my head low, pretending not to see them.I was careful about everything I did. Finally the day got over. I was sitting in my room on my bed with an open useless book, just pretending to read it.The house was quiet now. Most of the wolves were asleep.Even the guards had relaxed a little, but I knew they were still there, hiding in the dark corners. Then my phone vibrated.I jumped a little.I quickly grabbed it and checked the screen.Kieran.My heart started to race.I opened the message. “I’m at the barn. Come.”I got up slowly, trying not to make any noise. It was risky but I h

Sirella’s povI as sirella sat on the dusty floor. Cracks lined the walls and I admired how quiet it was here. It was always cold and dark. That’s what I loved most about this place. I held the phone in my hand tightly as I called Kieran. My hands were shaking a little but I still pinched myself every now and then to be more confident in myself. Finally, after a few rings, he picked up. “Sirella?” Kieran’s voice came through the phone. It sounded worried.“Hey, I’m here,” I said as I looked around to make sure no one was listening.“Are you okay?” He asked. “What’s going on?”I took in deep breaths and closed my eyes for a moment. How could I tell him? How could I tell him what I had witnessed? How could I tell him Donovan and Damien were more evil than we realized? I was already tired of saying that to him and I was sure he knew.“I’m alright,” I said after a second, keeping my voice steady."Sirella," Kieran said slowly, like he didn't believe me. "Don't lie to me." "I'm not lyin

Kieran’s povI stabbed my fork into the meat harder than I needed to.I couldn’t get Donovan and how he was doing things in his pack out of my head.At first I had my doubts; perhaps he was just another greedy alpha like so many of the others. But now… now I knew something was deeper wrong. Stealing wolves? He was clearly using them against their wills. The way he acted. The way he smiled too much. The way he always had to be in control of everything and everyone around him. It made my skin crawl.I exhaled and lowered my fork.I glanced at my hands.I thought of Sirella and thought of her bruises I had seen.Bruises that appeared as if she’d been manhandled, thrown, injured.I haven’t asked her about it yet. I pushed it aside.Maybe I just didn’t want to hear her lie.Or maybe I just wasn’t ready to hear the truth.Something bad was happening to her and she was keeping it from me.“Why, Sirella?” I whispered to myself. “Why are you keeping secrets?”I sat back in the chair and rubbe
