My foot pressed the throttle pedal to accelerate on the state highway with the scenic Cascade Mountains in the distance.

I was in a hurry.

This was an emergency.

It was now or never. My pulse quickened from the anxiety.

Ten minutes away from Tara’s café. I’m tapping my index fingers on the steering wheel and whistling to the tune of ‘You and I’ by Lady Gaga. Glancing at the time, it was around one o’clock now. The phone screen lit up on the dashboard, chiming ridiculously non-stop. I took it out of the holder.

It was Andrew, Duke’s father. Oh, goddess. My breath hitched. Letting it go to voicemail was a better option. I’ll call him back soon. I managed to lose the warriors who were assigned to be my bodyguard. Even knowing how worried they were because I was not at the pack house would not deter me from my goal. I had to be quick about it before going home. Therefore, I drove adequately fast.
