“You were in there a while,” Valerie said. She’d been waiting for me by the bike racks, typing away at her phone.

I shrugged, swinging my bag over my shoulder. “Ruby had a moment.”

Valerie raised her brows. “A violent moment or an emotional breakdown moment?”

“Somewhere weirdly in the middle.”

She made a face. “Creepy. Don’t let her mess with your head.”

“I won’t.”

But I wasn’t so sure. Something about what Ruby said clung to me, hard to shake off no matter how hard I wanted to push any thoughts of her. It wasn’t just about me. There was more to her fire than just spite.

We walked to my car, and just as we were climbing in, a familiar figure approached. Levi was walking toward us, a duffel bag slung over his shoulder. His dark hair was damp with sweat, curling slightly at the ends. He wore the school's black football jersey over a sleeveless compression shirt, and his cleats clacked against the pavement with each step. He looked exhausted, but there was a confident, easy grin on his f

The darkness had teeth.Even though the faint magical orb floated above our heads, casting just enough glow to keep us from slipping into a panic, I couldn’t stop thinking about what might be crawling in the pitch-black beyond the tunnel.Every breath felt like a countdown. The walls were cold. The air was damp. And despite the number of people packed into this underground chamber, I’d never felt more alone.I kept one hand on the small boy sleeping in my lap and the other clenched against the floor, grounding myself. My nails had bitten crescents into my palms, but the pain didn’t matter. What mattered was staying still. Staying strong. For the children. For my brother, and the boy I loved with all my heart.“I can’t sit here,” Ruby muttered, rising again to pace. “What if they need help up there?”“Then they’ll ask for it,” Monica replied calmly from her station near the tunnel exit. “Running back will only get you killed. We’re staying put.”“But we’re warriors—”“No,” Monica cut h

Somewhere in the woods, something howled—louder, angrier, in pain. This wasn’t over. Not by a long shot.Twigs snapped under our feet, leaves whipped against my skin. The wind screamed in our ears as we darted through the trees, the children huddled between us like invaluable treasure we couldn’t afford to lose.Monica led the way with, ever focused and calculative, while Ruby flanked the side, her hands held high just incase we needed a little fire power to help in our aid.My lungs burned, but I didn’t dare slow down. The training cabin came into view—small, stone-built, crouched beneath a canopy of weeping willows. It looked almost insignificant from the outside, a forgotten cottage—but we all knew what it was. Reinforced walls. Escape tunnels. A lock that could hold back gods, if need be.“Go!” Monica shouted, ushering the kids forward. “Inside, all of you—don’t be scared!”Claire was already there, waiting with Sierra. She and Valerie helped the younger ones climb the small porch

The ferals had breached the borders. They were now inside Moondew, sinking their teeth into whoever they could get their hands on. Before I knew it, I was running through the scattered crowd with Jerry and Levi by my side.“How did this happen?” Levi gritted his teeth, shielding me from an incoming body being thrown to the side.“They got in,” Jerry panted, shoving people aside to pave a way for us. “They fucking got in. They finally found a rift in the barrier. Fuck!”Levi swore under his breath too, taking my hand and squeezing it tight as a way to reassure me—or rather, himself. We made it behind the bleachers where Monica stood, protecting about a dozen pups from getting hurt. I looked around, my eyes catching the dent Levi had made on the wall once upon a time, when Damien had tried to force himself on me.But that didn’t matter now. What mattered was getting the children to safety.“Stay here,” Jerry whispered, turning to head out from the cover again.I stepped forward. “Where

ASTRA?I sighted Levi’s text the moment I picked up my phone the next morning. Still snuggled under my blanket, my fingers hovered over the keyboard before I hit send.MORNING. SLEEP GOOD?I stared at the message for exactly three seconds before sighing and tossing the phone onto the pillow beside me.I hadn’t slept. Not really. After Levi left last night—quietly, through the window like some kind of hormone riddled Romeo or shaolin ninja—I lay awake for hours, reliving every second of what happened. Every kiss. Every breath. Every word. Every touch. He’d kissed me again. And this time, I wasn’t confused. I’d never been more sure of anything in my life. I made a choice at that moment, to embrace it instead of running like I’d been so used to. The reality of it sat heavy and warm in my chest, equal parts terrifying and thrilling. The buzz of my phone startled me.BARELY. YOU WRECKED MY SLEEP SCHEDULE, HALF BREED.I grinned, chewing the inside of my cheek.SAYS THE BOY WHO SHOWED UP TO

I’d spent the whole week pretending I was okay.Every time Levi passed me in the halls, every time he smirked from across the training yard or tossed a lazy wave during lunch, I played along. I smiled when I was supposed to, laughed when Valerie cracked a joke, acted like everything was perfectly fine. But it wasn’t.Not after what happened between us. Not after that kiss.We hadn’t talked about it. Not once. Not in words, anyway. He’d been…Levi. Charming, maddening, all so frustrating. He’d ruffled my hair once, made fun of my Billie Eilish obsession, winked across the locker-lined corridor. All like nothing had ever happened. Like we were still just friends and we hadn’t yet done anything that altered the course. And maybe to him, it hadn’t. Maybe I was the only one carrying this thing around like a secret I couldn’t bury.So when Friday finally came, dragging its weight behind me like a wet coat, I was more than ready to escape school. I threw my bag into the backseat of Julian’s t
