Chapter 3

Author: Charcoal Cotton Candy
"Hey, hey. Why are you getting so worked up?"

Only then did I notice Zoe had come with him.

She gave Landon an exasperated look, caught him by the sleeve, and tugged him back behind her before turning to me.

"Can you do me a favor and stop digging your heels in for once, Quinn?"

My gaze dropped to the way her fingers were still curled around his sleeve, but I said nothing.

Zoe hesitated, then tried again in a coaxing tone.

"Haven't you been wanting him to move back? I spent all night talking him into it.

"He handed in his resignation this morning. You won't have to keep traveling back and forth to see each other anymore.

"Come on. That should make you happy, right?"

I gave a faint smile.

For six months, I'd begged Landon to apply for a transfer back. Every time, he'd brushed me off with the same excuse: the project wasn't finished yet, and he didn't trust anyone else to take over.

Yet the moment Zoe asked, suddenly even his job didn't matter.

Zoe shot Landon a meaningful look.

"I'll let you two talk. I need to use the bathroom."

With that, she disappeared down the hall.

I picked up the black bag from the floor and held it out to Landon. Inside were the toiletries and other things he'd left at my place.

"We're already broken up. There's nothing left for us to talk about."

Landon impatiently knocked the bag aside.

"Can you stop threatening to break up with me every time you want to test me?"

"Ah! There's a roach! Landon!"

Zoe's scream came from behind us.

Landon's expression changed instantly. He brushed straight past me and rushed into the bathroom.

A moment later, he scooped Zoe up with one arm hooked high beneath her thighs and carried her into the bedroom.

A flash of bare skin caught my eye.

I looked toward the bathroom.

Her underwear and skirt were still sitting on the counter by the sink.

She wasn't wearing anything from the waist down.

For a second, my mind went blank.

Before I could even process it, Landon came back out, reached past me for her clothes, and handed them into the bedroom. This time he stayed in the doorway instead of going inside, but the tips of his ears had turned red all the way down his neck, and there was a heat in his eyes I couldn't ignore.

Zoe laughed softly from inside.

"Oh, please. It's not like there's anything you haven't already seen when we dated. Why are you acting shy now?"

Nausea surged up my throat.

I couldn't take it anymore. I stormed into the room, grabbed Zoe, and started dragging her toward the door.

"Get out! Both of you, get out! I don't want to see either of you!"

"Quinn, you're hurting me!"

Zoe cried out and struggled against me.

The words had barely left her mouth when someone shoved me hard.

I went down, and my forehead slammed into the corner of a cabinet.

Pain exploded through my head, and my vision went black for several seconds before I could finally focus again.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Landon checking Zoe's reddened wrist with obvious concern.

When he turned to me, all that concern was gone. His face was filled with anger.

"Why can't you just talk things out like a normal person? Did you really have to get physical with her?"

I braced a hand against the wall and forced myself upright.

When I touched my forehead, my fingers came away sticky.

Tears slipped down my face as an inexplicable ache tightened in my chest.

"Zoe, what have I ever done to you for you to treat me like this?"

Out of all the men in the world, she had to choose my boyfriend to blur every boundary with.

"Don't forget, if my parents hadn't supported you back then, you wouldn't even have made it through college!"

Zoe's face went pale. She pushed Landon away, and within seconds her eyes were even redder than mine.

"Quinn, Landon and I are never getting back together. You're reading too much into this."

"Yet you've never once turned down all the things he does for you!"

All that attention, with absolutely no sense of boundaries.

Zoe pressed her lips together as tears began spilling down her cheeks. It took her a long moment before she finally spoke.

"I'm sorry. I'll leave."

I hadn't even had a chance to respond before Landon stepped in front of her.

As if she were the one who'd been wronged.

"What right do you have to throw her out?"

"If Zoe hadn't found out you had a crush on me back then, she never would've broken up with me!

"And that company you joined after graduation? She was the one who asked me to pull strings and get your resume in front of them, all because she wanted to set us up!

"She's always treated you like her best friend and gone out of her way for you. You're the one who gets jealous over every little thing and turns it into a huge fight."

My mind went completely blank.

I stared at Landon, unable to tear my eyes away from him.

"So what are you saying?

"You only accepted my confession and got together with me because Zoe told you to?"

Sunlight caught the diamond in Landon's hand, sending a sharp flash of light into my eyes.I'd waited so long for this ring from him. Now that he was finally offering it, it was too late.I reached down and picked it up, almost amused as I turned it over in my hand."SY's newest design. It's beautiful."I looked at him. "Zoe picked it out, didn't she?"Landon's gaze shifted away."I don't know much about jewelry, so I asked her for some advice."I nodded. It sounded exactly like the kind of excuse he would make."And the proposal? I'm guessing she pushed you into this too."His expression grew even more uncomfortable."...Yes."Then he hurried to add, "But I'm the one who genuinely wants to marry you now. This has nothing to do with Zoe."During the month Landon had been giving me the silent treatment, he'd taken Zoe around doing all the things they'd never gotten to do when they were younger, making up for all the reckless memories their relationship had missed. But after they'd spent

Quinn's POVWhen Mom called for me, Miles Zimmerman was still quietly asking if I wanted to try that new restaurant everyone had been talking about for dinner.I was smiling and about to answer when I noticed the strange look on Mom's face. She motioned for me to come over, looking both uncomfortable and faintly annoyed.Confused, I walked over and saw Landon standing there.I stopped short."What are you doing here?"Shouldn't he have been off somewhere with Zoe, enjoying whatever it was they insisted on calling "just friendship"?Landon grabbed my arm and pulled me outside, his expression tense."Who was that guy sitting next to you?"My elbow struck the doorframe, and I sucked in a sharp breath. Irritated, I yanked my arm free."My fiancé.""What?"Landon stared at me as if he couldn't believe what he'd heard."Quinn Sterling, being mad at me is one thing, but this is going way too far. How can you be this reckless?"You broke up with me because you were angry, fine. Then you quit y

Landon turned and walked out of the bar without another word.He had just opened his car door when Zoe came running after him in tears and wrapped her arms around him from behind."You went looking for Quinn, didn't you?"You... really fell in love with her?"Landon turned to face her and gently pulled her hands away."I don't know."When it came to Quinn, he'd never really stopped to ask himself whether he loved her. All these years, he'd simply accepted everything she did for him without thinking much about what he felt in return.Maybe he did love her.Otherwise, hearing her name now wouldn't leave that strange, prickling ache in his chest.Zoe stared at him, her cheeks still flushed from the alcohol. If this had been the Landon she knew before, he would have scoffed and said, "You're the one who kept pushing me to date her. What's all this talk about love? That's ridiculous."Instead, he said nothing.Zoe swayed slightly and had to brace herself against the wall."I'm sorry. I was

An hour later, Landon pulled up outside Quinn's office building and headed straight for the thirty-eighth floor. The receptionist recognized him immediately and teased, "Wow, I haven't seen you come pick Quinn up from work in forever."Landon's throat tightened. Come to think of it, it had been almost a year."Is she here?"That made the receptionist pause."I don't think I've seen her today."Then she spotted another woman passing by and called her over."Hey, you're in Quinn's department, right? I don't think she came in today. Have you seen her?"The woman frowned."You seriously don't know? She quit."Then she shook her head. "No idea what she was thinking. Probably had something to do with that long-distance boyfriend of hers again. She's hopeless when it comes to him."Landon's expression tightened."When did she quit?""About a month ago, I think. "She'd been working overtime for two straight months because she wanted to save up enough time off to go see her boyfriend. She stay

Landon froze where he stood. How had he not heard that Quinn had moved out? Whenever anything happened before, hadn't she always texted him about it and asked for his opinion?Zoe tried to comfort him."Maybe she's still mad. I'll call and ask where she is."She pulled out her phone and dialed, but all that came through was a cold automated message."Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently unavailable."Her expression stiffened. She opened their chat instead.[Quinn, where are you? Still mad?][Landon has a surprise for you today. It's something you're definitely going to love.]Her fingers moved quickly across the screen. Her message went through with a single gray tick, but the second one never appeared.Zoe stared at it in disbelief."Quinn blocked me."Landon frowned, and his anger flared almost instantly."I've let her stew for a whole month, and she still doesn't know when to quit?"Does she really think the whole world has to revolve around her?"As he spoke, he pulled ou

Landon didn't answer. His eyes flicked to the cut on my forehead, and without a word, he turned to find the first-aid kit. He pressed me down into a chair and gently wiped away the blood before treating the wound. His touch was careful, but his voice was ice-cold."What difference does it make?"Zoe cares too much about your friendship to ever get back together with me."I'd also promised her I'd marry you and take responsibility for you for the rest of my life."Isn't that enough?"I stared at him.So I was supposed to stay in this relationship and keep pretending to not see the way the two of them kept crossing lines right in front of me?He was careful not to hurt me, but the moment the medication touched the cut, pain shot through my forehead, and I clenched my fists. When I finally spoke, my voice was hoarse."No."Because this whole thing disgusts me."Because the man you are now doesn't deserve my love.Landon's hand froze in midair, and for a moment, his expression went complet
