Chapter 2

Author: Charcoal Cotton Candy
"Landon, if you can't even handle this with a little decency, then we can skip all the usual breakup formalities and just..."

"Ah!"

Zoe's terrified scream suddenly came through the phone, drowning out the rest of my sentence.

The call disconnected immediately afterward.

Ten minutes later, Zoe posted an update.

Landon's tall frame was crammed into the bathroom, and from the angle of the photo, he seemed to be washing something.

[What a nightmare. My period came out of nowhere in the middle of the night, and I got blood all over my underwear.]

[But someone says girls shouldn't be dealing with cold water when they're on their period, so he told me to leave it to him. Guess I can go back to sleep.]

I thought about what Landon had said to me the night before, accusing me of being dramatic.

It felt like a thousand needles were stabbing at my heart until I almost couldn't feel the pain anymore.

A year earlier, I'd once jokingly asked Landon and Zoe a question while the three of us were playing a game.

"Have you two ever thought about getting back together?"

They exchanged identical looks of disgust before answering at the same time.

"Absolutely not!"

"I'll never forget the way she looked down on me back then just because I was broke!"

"Oh, please! Like I'd ever want a guy whose answer to everything is, 'Drink some water, and you'll feel better.'"

They'd argued until both of them were red in the face.

At the time, that had been enough to put my mind at ease.

Later, Zoe had asked me what I even saw in Landon.

I'd been too embarrassed to admit the truth.

I'd had a crush on him for six years, starting back in college.

Just to get closer to him, I'd started following the bands he liked and even sat through his mind-numbingly boring lectures from a quiet corner of the classroom.

I'd secretly added one of his roommates online, too, hoping to learn more about what he liked.

Then his roommate told me Landon already had a girlfriend.

She just went to a different school.

So I buried the crush and forced myself to move on.

Then, by sheer coincidence, the first project I was assigned during my internship was one he was leading.

Seeing him again, all those feelings I'd thought were long gone came rushing back.

Back in college, I'd been too insecure to tell anyone about my crush, not even Zoe.

And as far as Zoe was concerned, Landon barely even registered among the guys she'd dated. She certainly never bothered telling me the names of every ex she'd had.

So I'd honestly believed that even if they ever crossed paths again, nothing would happen between them.

After I sent Landon the recipe, exhaustion finally caught up with me, and I drifted off.

By the time I woke up, it was already the next afternoon.

I told my landlord I would be moving out, then called my mom.

"That guy you mentioned before... when I come home this time, I can make time to meet him."

My mom paused, clearly caught off guard. She seemed like she wanted to ask something, but in the end, she didn't.

"Okay. When are you coming back? Your dad and I will come pick you up."

Ever since Landon had stood us up that day, my parents never really warmed to him again.

I'd even accused them of judging him unfairly.

Thinking about it now, I could only laugh at myself.

I forced myself out of bed and started packing.

The matching ceramic mugs Landon had made for us two years ago went straight into the trash.

The framed photo of the two of us that we'd spent forever picking out, I burned.

The gifts he'd given me for birthdays and holidays, I photographed and listed them on a resale app.

Six years of secretly loving him.

Three years of actually being together.

It should have ended a long time ago.

"What are you doing?"

Landon stood in the doorway, staring at the pile of things I'd thrown out.

I didn't look at him and kept sorting through the closet.

"Nothing. Just getting rid of things I don't need anymore."

He stood there in silence for a long time before finally speaking, sounding tired.

"Do you really have to make such a big deal out of this?"

Then he walked over and wrapped his arms around me from behind.

A brand-new umbrella, tag still attached, appeared in front of me as he waved it lightly.

"I checked the forecast. It's supposed to rain for the next few days.

"Don't forget your umbrella again."

The scent of Zoe's usual perfume reached me immediately.

It had never smelled so unbearable before.

"Give it to Zoe. She probably needs it more than I do."

I pushed his hand away.

The umbrella hit the floor with a sharp clatter.

Landon's expression darkened instantly.

"Quinn Sterling, what is your problem?

"I never should've listened to Zoe and come over here in the first place."

Sunlight caught the diamond in Landon's hand, sending a sharp flash of light into my eyes.I'd waited so long for this ring from him. Now that he was finally offering it, it was too late.I reached down and picked it up, almost amused as I turned it over in my hand."SY's newest design. It's beautiful."I looked at him. "Zoe picked it out, didn't she?"Landon's gaze shifted away."I don't know much about jewelry, so I asked her for some advice."I nodded. It sounded exactly like the kind of excuse he would make."And the proposal? I'm guessing she pushed you into this too."His expression grew even more uncomfortable."...Yes."Then he hurried to add, "But I'm the one who genuinely wants to marry you now. This has nothing to do with Zoe."During the month Landon had been giving me the silent treatment, he'd taken Zoe around doing all the things they'd never gotten to do when they were younger, making up for all the reckless memories their relationship had missed. But after they'd spent

Quinn's POVWhen Mom called for me, Miles Zimmerman was still quietly asking if I wanted to try that new restaurant everyone had been talking about for dinner.I was smiling and about to answer when I noticed the strange look on Mom's face. She motioned for me to come over, looking both uncomfortable and faintly annoyed.Confused, I walked over and saw Landon standing there.I stopped short."What are you doing here?"Shouldn't he have been off somewhere with Zoe, enjoying whatever it was they insisted on calling "just friendship"?Landon grabbed my arm and pulled me outside, his expression tense."Who was that guy sitting next to you?"My elbow struck the doorframe, and I sucked in a sharp breath. Irritated, I yanked my arm free."My fiancé.""What?"Landon stared at me as if he couldn't believe what he'd heard."Quinn Sterling, being mad at me is one thing, but this is going way too far. How can you be this reckless?"You broke up with me because you were angry, fine. Then you quit y

Landon turned and walked out of the bar without another word.He had just opened his car door when Zoe came running after him in tears and wrapped her arms around him from behind."You went looking for Quinn, didn't you?"You... really fell in love with her?"Landon turned to face her and gently pulled her hands away."I don't know."When it came to Quinn, he'd never really stopped to ask himself whether he loved her. All these years, he'd simply accepted everything she did for him without thinking much about what he felt in return.Maybe he did love her.Otherwise, hearing her name now wouldn't leave that strange, prickling ache in his chest.Zoe stared at him, her cheeks still flushed from the alcohol. If this had been the Landon she knew before, he would have scoffed and said, "You're the one who kept pushing me to date her. What's all this talk about love? That's ridiculous."Instead, he said nothing.Zoe swayed slightly and had to brace herself against the wall."I'm sorry. I was

An hour later, Landon pulled up outside Quinn's office building and headed straight for the thirty-eighth floor. The receptionist recognized him immediately and teased, "Wow, I haven't seen you come pick Quinn up from work in forever."Landon's throat tightened. Come to think of it, it had been almost a year."Is she here?"That made the receptionist pause."I don't think I've seen her today."Then she spotted another woman passing by and called her over."Hey, you're in Quinn's department, right? I don't think she came in today. Have you seen her?"The woman frowned."You seriously don't know? She quit."Then she shook her head. "No idea what she was thinking. Probably had something to do with that long-distance boyfriend of hers again. She's hopeless when it comes to him."Landon's expression tightened."When did she quit?""About a month ago, I think. "She'd been working overtime for two straight months because she wanted to save up enough time off to go see her boyfriend. She stay

Landon froze where he stood. How had he not heard that Quinn had moved out? Whenever anything happened before, hadn't she always texted him about it and asked for his opinion?Zoe tried to comfort him."Maybe she's still mad. I'll call and ask where she is."She pulled out her phone and dialed, but all that came through was a cold automated message."Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently unavailable."Her expression stiffened. She opened their chat instead.[Quinn, where are you? Still mad?][Landon has a surprise for you today. It's something you're definitely going to love.]Her fingers moved quickly across the screen. Her message went through with a single gray tick, but the second one never appeared.Zoe stared at it in disbelief."Quinn blocked me."Landon frowned, and his anger flared almost instantly."I've let her stew for a whole month, and she still doesn't know when to quit?"Does she really think the whole world has to revolve around her?"As he spoke, he pulled ou

Landon didn't answer. His eyes flicked to the cut on my forehead, and without a word, he turned to find the first-aid kit. He pressed me down into a chair and gently wiped away the blood before treating the wound. His touch was careful, but his voice was ice-cold."What difference does it make?"Zoe cares too much about your friendship to ever get back together with me."I'd also promised her I'd marry you and take responsibility for you for the rest of my life."Isn't that enough?"I stared at him.So I was supposed to stay in this relationship and keep pretending to not see the way the two of them kept crossing lines right in front of me?He was careful not to hurt me, but the moment the medication touched the cut, pain shot through my forehead, and I clenched my fists. When I finally spoke, my voice was hoarse."No."Because this whole thing disgusts me."Because the man you are now doesn't deserve my love.Landon's hand froze in midair, and for a moment, his expression went complet
