Chapter 4

Author: Charcoal Cotton Candy
Landon didn't answer.

His eyes flicked to the cut on my forehead, and without a word, he turned to find the first-aid kit. He pressed me down into a chair and gently wiped away the blood before treating the wound.

His touch was careful, but his voice was ice-cold.

"What difference does it make?

"Zoe cares too much about your friendship to ever get back together with me.

"I'd also promised her I'd marry you and take responsibility for you for the rest of my life.

"Isn't that enough?"

I stared at him.

So I was supposed to stay in this relationship and keep pretending to not see the way the two of them kept crossing lines right in front of me?

He was careful not to hurt me, but the moment the medication touched the cut, pain shot through my forehead, and I clenched my fists.

When I finally spoke, my voice was hoarse.

"No.

"Because this whole thing disgusts me."

Because the man you are now doesn't deserve my love.

Landon's hand froze in midair, and for a moment, his expression went completely blank.

Zoe opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something, but Landon stopped her before she could.

"The more you indulge her, the worse she gets!"

He shot to his feet with a cold scoff and looked down at me.

"Quinn, if Zoe and I really wanted something to happen between us, do you honestly think you'd have the chance to still be sitting here, throwing a fit about it?

"Fine. You want to break up?

"Let's see how long you last this time."

With that, he grabbed Zoe and walked out.

The door slammed behind them.

I thought back to the last time I'd tried to end things.

Landon had transferred more than six hundred miles away. For six months, he ignored my messages and refused to take my calls.

I'd even taken time off work and gone all the way there to find him, only for him to start sleeping at the office just to avoid me.

I'd swallowed my pride, apologized over and over, and practically begged him to forgive me.

None of it had worked.

Then Zoe had said just one thing.

"Do it for me, okay?"

And that had been enough.

I wiped away the tears that had already dried on my face.

That was all there was to it.

He simply never loved me.

Landon, this time I'd finally learned how to let you go.

I went back inside, packed my things, and headed to the airport with two suitcases.

While I waited for my flight, notifications kept lighting up my social feed.

Landon and Zoe took turns posting updates.

He took her to the Skyline Tower, the place I'd been talking about wanting to visit for ages. They posed together on the observation wheel hundreds of feet above the city, then jumped from the 106th-floor bungee platform wrapped in each other's arms.

At the revolving restaurant overlooking the skyline, every photo was of Zoe smiling for the camera.

Zoe posted: [Finally got to make good on a promise from years ago, thanks to a certain someone.]

Then Landon posted: [And thanks to a certain someone, I finally got to make up for something I missed out on when I was younger.]

I scrolled through every post and liked them one by one.

Then I blocked them both.

When boarding was called, I got on the plane with no intention of ever looking back.

Third-Person POV

A month later, Landon returned to Quinn's old apartment complex with his parents.

Zoe walked beside them, smiling softly.

"Once Quinn sees you've come here with your family to make things official, she'll understand you're serious about marrying her. No matter how angry she is, she'll have to let it go eventually."

Then she glanced at him.

"You brought the ring, right? Don't mess up the proposal when we get up there."

Landon patted his pocket to make sure it was still there before reaching for the doorbell.

He rang once.

Then again.

No matter how many times he pressed it, no one answered.

Impatience slowly crept across his face.

Eventually, a neighbor opened their door and peeked into the hallway. The moment they recognized him, they called out,

"Stop ringing. Nobody lives there anymore.

"Your girlfriend moved out a month ago. You seriously didn't know?"

Sunlight caught the diamond in Landon's hand, sending a sharp flash of light into my eyes.I'd waited so long for this ring from him. Now that he was finally offering it, it was too late.I reached down and picked it up, almost amused as I turned it over in my hand."SY's newest design. It's beautiful."I looked at him. "Zoe picked it out, didn't she?"Landon's gaze shifted away."I don't know much about jewelry, so I asked her for some advice."I nodded. It sounded exactly like the kind of excuse he would make."And the proposal? I'm guessing she pushed you into this too."His expression grew even more uncomfortable."...Yes."Then he hurried to add, "But I'm the one who genuinely wants to marry you now. This has nothing to do with Zoe."During the month Landon had been giving me the silent treatment, he'd taken Zoe around doing all the things they'd never gotten to do when they were younger, making up for all the reckless memories their relationship had missed. But after they'd spent

Quinn's POVWhen Mom called for me, Miles Zimmerman was still quietly asking if I wanted to try that new restaurant everyone had been talking about for dinner.I was smiling and about to answer when I noticed the strange look on Mom's face. She motioned for me to come over, looking both uncomfortable and faintly annoyed.Confused, I walked over and saw Landon standing there.I stopped short."What are you doing here?"Shouldn't he have been off somewhere with Zoe, enjoying whatever it was they insisted on calling "just friendship"?Landon grabbed my arm and pulled me outside, his expression tense."Who was that guy sitting next to you?"My elbow struck the doorframe, and I sucked in a sharp breath. Irritated, I yanked my arm free."My fiancé.""What?"Landon stared at me as if he couldn't believe what he'd heard."Quinn Sterling, being mad at me is one thing, but this is going way too far. How can you be this reckless?"You broke up with me because you were angry, fine. Then you quit y

Landon turned and walked out of the bar without another word.He had just opened his car door when Zoe came running after him in tears and wrapped her arms around him from behind."You went looking for Quinn, didn't you?"You... really fell in love with her?"Landon turned to face her and gently pulled her hands away."I don't know."When it came to Quinn, he'd never really stopped to ask himself whether he loved her. All these years, he'd simply accepted everything she did for him without thinking much about what he felt in return.Maybe he did love her.Otherwise, hearing her name now wouldn't leave that strange, prickling ache in his chest.Zoe stared at him, her cheeks still flushed from the alcohol. If this had been the Landon she knew before, he would have scoffed and said, "You're the one who kept pushing me to date her. What's all this talk about love? That's ridiculous."Instead, he said nothing.Zoe swayed slightly and had to brace herself against the wall."I'm sorry. I was

An hour later, Landon pulled up outside Quinn's office building and headed straight for the thirty-eighth floor. The receptionist recognized him immediately and teased, "Wow, I haven't seen you come pick Quinn up from work in forever."Landon's throat tightened. Come to think of it, it had been almost a year."Is she here?"That made the receptionist pause."I don't think I've seen her today."Then she spotted another woman passing by and called her over."Hey, you're in Quinn's department, right? I don't think she came in today. Have you seen her?"The woman frowned."You seriously don't know? She quit."Then she shook her head. "No idea what she was thinking. Probably had something to do with that long-distance boyfriend of hers again. She's hopeless when it comes to him."Landon's expression tightened."When did she quit?""About a month ago, I think. "She'd been working overtime for two straight months because she wanted to save up enough time off to go see her boyfriend. She stay

Landon froze where he stood. How had he not heard that Quinn had moved out? Whenever anything happened before, hadn't she always texted him about it and asked for his opinion?Zoe tried to comfort him."Maybe she's still mad. I'll call and ask where she is."She pulled out her phone and dialed, but all that came through was a cold automated message."Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently unavailable."Her expression stiffened. She opened their chat instead.[Quinn, where are you? Still mad?][Landon has a surprise for you today. It's something you're definitely going to love.]Her fingers moved quickly across the screen. Her message went through with a single gray tick, but the second one never appeared.Zoe stared at it in disbelief."Quinn blocked me."Landon frowned, and his anger flared almost instantly."I've let her stew for a whole month, and she still doesn't know when to quit?"Does she really think the whole world has to revolve around her?"As he spoke, he pulled ou
