Chapter 3

Author: Linda Clark
Caleb frowned, and his security officer nearly put me in a restraint hold.

I dodged him and shouted as quickly as I could.

"Mr. Whitaker, I'm Nora Keppler from the computer engineering program at Crestmont Institute of Technology. You saw my automation project during Homecoming.

"I'm here because I want to discuss an investment."

Professor Cole had hinted that someone wanted to buy my technology. At the time, I had been proud and determined to remain an independent researcher, so I hadn't even agreed to a meeting.

Caleb studied me from head to toe, then seemed to remember.

"You have ten minutes."

I climbed into the car before he could change his mind.

"The project has progressed steadily since your visit, but the testing phase requires enormous computing capacity.

"The administrator controlling our budget doesn't understand the field. He sees only the cost, so he refuses to release more funding.

"You do understand it. Avenrix is one of the leading technology companies in the industry. You know the potential return is substantial.

"I want you to join the development as an investor. Based on our current projections, the money you put in now should at least double within two years of launch."

Caleb reviewed the data package I sent him. Approval flickered in his eyes, though his expression stayed unreadable.

"You know your field.

"But I could simply buy the project. Why should I finance your company instead?"

I met his gaze.

"Because I would destroy the program before surrendering ownership of my work.

"Your engineers could reproduce the technology eventually. The real question is how much time that would cost. In this industry, the first company to market captures the profit.

"Backing me now is the most efficient option. It gives you the shortest path and the strongest lead."

When he gave the slightest nod, I pressed harder.

"I'll accept a performance-based investment agreement. I'll stake everything I own on the project becoming profitable within three months of launch."

Caleb smiled, clearly surprised.

"You're young, but you have nerve.

"I reviewed your technology when I visited the institute. It meets our standards.

"I'll have legal draft an investment agreement immediately. Finance can transfer the first installment to the university tomorrow.

"I want a progress report every three months. If the work stalls, I reserve the right to pull further funding."

When I stepped out of his car, my knees nearly buckled on the sidewalk.

Relief and wild joy filled my chest. I wanted to sit down and sob.

But too much remained unresolved. I forced myself to breathe and called Professor Cole.

"Professor, the project can continue.

"I just met with Caleb Whitaker. Avenrix Systems is willing to fund the research, so we don't have to worry about the university grant anymore.

"The first transfer can arrive tomorrow. I'll submit the revised funding report tonight."

Silence answered me. It was nothing like the celebration I had imagined.

Dread returned at once.

Then Professor Cole's furious voice came through the phone.

"Continue? Not a chance.

"Nora, I never expected this from you. Debt collectors have been calling the dean's office looking for you.

"The institute takes integrity complaints seriously. Your mother is already here. Get back to campus now."

I froze. The version of me ten years in the future sounded older now."The Whitakers control an enormous business network. Once you marry him, everyone treats your work as another division of Avenrix."You stop being Nora Keppler, founder, and become Mrs. Whitaker. After three children, your name disappears from the patents, and the industry stops treating you as an independent entrepreneur."You spend your days talking with other executives' spouses about schools, handbags, and whether your husband is cheating while his family judges every choice you make."I can't say that life is terrible. It simply isn't the future I wanted."Nora, there is still time. Do you want to change it?"After the call ended, I stayed awake all night. The next morning, I walked into Caleb's office."I've made my decision."Confidence and hope brightened his eyes."I hope it's the answer I want."I took a deep breath and inclined my head."Caleb, you're an extraordinary man, but marrying into a d

"Linda, Tyler finally picked up his car today."Where did the money come from? I used Nora's Social Security number to get the loan."You remember Connor Hayes, the grandson of that friend from our old neighborhood? He just started working at Alderline Consumer Finance. He needed applications, and I needed cash. It worked perfectly."Why would Nora be angry? She failed her latest performance review. I'm pushing her because I want her to become better. One day she'll thank me."Mom loved to brag. Avery had searched her own mother's phone on a hunch and found the voice messages Diane had sent to Aunt Linda.Mom's face drained of color, and she began to stammer."I... I was exaggerating."Avery ignored the desperate excuse and introduced the evidence one piece at a time."These are the deposits into Tyler Keppler's bank account."This is security footage obtained from Alderline Consumer Finance. It identifies Connor Hayes, the employee named in the recording."Yesterday, Mr. Hay

Mom raised a hand to strike Caleb, and I threw myself between them. She began screaming at full volume."Now you're protecting the man who pays for you? I wasted all those years raising you."If your father could see what you've become, he'd never rest in peace."Caleb's disgust grew more visible, and despair flooded me again.Security arrived with officers from the Crestmont Police Department. It took several people to remove her from the property. Before they led her away, she twisted around and glared at me."Hiding behind a man won't save you. I'll come back every day and see how long your lover can keep protecting you."My coworkers were already whispering. I stood in the center of it, cold all over.It was happening again. That woman had destroyed my last chance.Caleb gestured for me to follow him upstairs. Once we were in his office, he frowned."How do you plan to handle this?"I bit my lip and fought back tears."I'm sorry. I know my mother crossed every line."

The sight of the court papers sent a chill up Mom's neck. She skimmed the first page, and her unease deepened.Tyler shuffled over in his slippers, glanced at it, and kept grinning."You think she made this with AI? It looks pretty convincing."Mom steadied herself and sneered."You're right. Where would she get money for a lawyer? She's trying to scare us."She called me with absolute confidence, but the automated message said I was unavailable.Tyler yawned."Women love playing hard to get. She's waiting for you to beg her to come home."Ignore her, Mom. Let her go hungry for a few days and she'll remember who takes care of her."Mom nodded in silence. After several unanswered calls, the certainty in her eyes began to fade. While we waited for the hearing, I moved every file and prototype into Avenrix's building. At the institute, scarce funding and a full course load had kept me from giving the project my complete attention. Now I had capital and nowhere else to go. My entire body went numb. When I reached campus and saw Mom sitting there with her chin raised, delayed anger and grief finally surged through me.Dean Pierce looked me over with clear displeasure. Professor Cole spoke with a hard expression."Explain why you owe this much money to an online lender."I opened my mouth, but Mom cut in with a shrill voice."Why do you think? You failed to guide her. My daughter was always obedient before this school led her astray."You're supposed to be a respected professor. She follows you around every day, and you noticed nothing?"This entire department is negligent. Maybe the Bellweather Board of Higher Education should hear about it."Both administrators went rigid with anger. I stared at her, unable to believe the performance."You stole my identity."She widened her eyes in manufactured shock."My daughter never lied until she came here. Someone on this campus has corrupted her."I will not support her staying at this institute. I'm
