My mother was a veteran HR director, so she built a performance scorecard for my entire childhood. A perfect test score earned me ten minutes on my phone. Finishing first in school earned me a milkshake. Whatever I wanted, I had to earn with grades. After I entered Crestmont Institute of Technology, I spent three straight years at the top of my program. According to her rules, that was worth one thousand dollars. When I came home, she tossed a single dollar bill at me. "So what if you're still first? Your GPA has slipped by a tenth of a point every year. You have the nerve to ask for a reward?" Beside her, my brother lounged with the keys to his new Hawthorne sedan spinning around one finger. My stomach sank. "When I got into Crestmont Tech, you said I wasn't valedictorian, so all I deserved was a used scooter. "Why does he get a new car for barely making it into community college..." Mom's eyes flashed. "You and Tyler are completely different. "He went from having no chance at college to getting accepted somewhere. That's progress. You're moving backward. "Since you've chosen to coast, I'm cutting off your living expenses next semester. We only invest resources in people who improve. "Raise your GPA by finals, then come trade your grades for money." I walked outside without another word and made a call. "You really are me, ten years from now. You were right. Her performance system only applies to me." Future me answered calmly. "Tomorrow, sell the artwork Dad left you. Three of the pieces are genuine old masters. "Put every dollar into your research project. No matter what anyone says, don't abandon it. That project is your way into Crestmont's tech elite. "Let this family lose a future multimillionaire over one thousand dollars."

Chapter 1

"I've called you three times. So this is where you've been hiding with your phone.

"You're giving me attitude over one thousand dollars? Think about how many thousands I've spent raising you."

I ended the call and tried to slip past Mom on my way upstairs, but she blocked me.

She held out one hand and wiggled her fingers.

I stared at her.

"What is that supposed to mean?"

She reached for my phone.

"You've been away so long you've forgotten the house rules?

"Screen time has to be earned with results. After three straight years of declining performance, you haven't earned a phone in this house.

"I paid to send you to college, and apparently all you learned was how to run wild."

More than a decade of her control rushed back at once, leaving a dull ache in my chest.

"I bought this phone myself. I pay my own tuition too.

"Why do your rules only apply to me? Tyler has failed nearly every class he's ever taken, and you let him do whatever he wants."

When I was little, everything I asked for came with a price tag. Lose one point on a test, and I spent the month eating plain toast and canned beans.

In the middle of summer, I had to finish ten practice tests to earn one hour of air-conditioning.

Tyler stayed in the cool living room all day, eating ice cream and watching cartoons.

Whenever I cried over the unfairness, Mom gave me the same patient lecture.

"I've worked in HR for ten years. I can read people's underlying personalities at a glance.

"A girl like you needs pressure to keep improving. Your brother has high emotional needs, so he requires encouragement.

"I'm using the method that's best for you. How could making you successful possibly hurt you?"

My answer clearly infuriated her. She gave a cold laugh.

"Under my roof, you follow my rules. Since you're so capable, try living without another cent from me.

"Go on. Let's see how far you get."

I let out a long breath.

"Fine."

I went to my room, packed quickly, then carried out the stack of unwanted paintings Dad had left in the storage room.

Mom leaned against the doorway, watching my hands with a thoughtful look.

I pulled the paintings behind me.

"Dad left these to me. They aren't yours."

Tyler, sprawled across the couch, burst out laughing.

"Who wants that junk? I wouldn't take it if you paid me.

"Mom, I'm hungry. What's for dinner?"

Mom looked away from the paintings and patted his cheek.

"I'm making your favorite cheeseburger casserole. Some people are just like their father, always dragging home garbage. Ignore her."

I smiled, though I couldn't name the mixture of emotions behind it.

Dad had left a substantial estate: a house, two vehicles, cash, and investments. Mom controlled most of it, while nearly every major asset had already been placed in Tyler's name.

Whenever I objected, she brushed me off.

"I'm saving your share for you. You can earn it with your doctoral diploma."

When I asked my future self about the inheritance, her voice had turned cold.

"The second your mother learned those paintings were valuable, she sold them and transferred everything to Tyler.

"Do you really think any of her promises were ever meant for us?"

I left the house and followed her instructions to Founders' Row, Crestmont's antiques district, where I found Mr. Bellamy.

His eyes lit up the moment he saw me.

"You're Michael Keppler's daughter, aren't you? He had an exceptional eye. These are serious pieces."

My heart pounded.

"Can you make me an offer?"

After a moment of thought, he entered a number into his calculator.

My hand tightened around the edge of my jacket when I saw it.

Two million eight hundred thousand dollars.

That was enough to finish my project.

I forced down my excitement and nodded.

"Deal."

After inspecting the condition of each painting, Mr. Bellamy pulled out his phone and initiated the transfer.

"The money has been wired. Check your account."

I opened my banking app, and cold sweat broke across my back.

My account had been frozen under a court-ordered garnishment.
