Heartbreak

MIA'S POV

“I need the ring back”

I heard Matt say as we both sat inside our favorite coffee shop enjoying coffee and delicious jam stuffed doughnuts. We had decided to meet up for lunch finally after being apart for about two whole weeks.

‘Work was tedious’, Matt had said with other weird excuses as to why he couldn’t meet up with me. This was weird and downright suspicious as we were the kind of couple who couldn’t stay apart from each other for just a day and now he suddenly became fine with not seeing me for almost two weeks! . It took a lot of bugging for him to agree to a mini date today.

I had just stuffed my mouth with a big bite of doughnut when he uttered  those words and I immediately started to choke and cough.

“Stop it! You’re making people stare.” He grumbled and gave a conscious look around as my choking and coughing had gotten the attention of the other people also having lunch around us.

My eyes went wide as I  noticed he didn’t even try to offer me a cup of water after dropping that bombshell on me but he cared a lot more about drawing attention to us by my coughing.

I reached for my cup of iced cappuccino and took a long sip, trying to wrap my head around what I just heard.  'I probably heard him wrong.' I thought to myself .

“I’m sorry babe. I must have heard you say something wrong and it caught me by surprise.” I tried to laugh it off but looking at Matt’s serious face wiped the laughter off my face in a second.

His eyes avoided mine  and danced around the shop while saying “You heard me. I want the ring back!”

“But we only just got engaged a month ago!”

I spluttered as I tried to reach out to take his hand. He pulled his hand back forcefully from mine and spoke in the harshest tone of voice i had ever heard.

“Well I don’t want to marry you anymore! Don't you get it?”

I looked very confused as  I tried pinching myself to wake up from this bad dream.

Matt and I were high school sweethearts. We had been together for ten years and I had no doubt in my mind that he was the one I  would be spending the rest of her life with. When he finally popped the question last month I  was so excited that I screamed a big yes. So this whole conversation with Matt right now was a lot confusing,

“But why?”

“You know my mom and sister don’t like you and I can’t marry a girl who’s going to destroy my family” Matt spat out.

“What are you talking about? Your mom and sister loves me”  I had never been this confused before and I  could feel a headache coming on as I tried to piece the pieces of this troubling puzzle together.

I took a deep breath and  wiped my sweaty palms on my jeans and tried to calm my heart from beating so fast. I could feel tears threatening to escape my eyes. Matt’s mom Lucy and his sister Clara adored me. I always took them shopping and showered them with gifts. They came to me for financial assistance almost every day and I was always more than happy to give. They had several designer bags and expensive jewelries thanks to me.

I also took them on expensive trips outside the country with my dads private jet severally and they bragged to everyone that I, Mia Silverstein, the only daughter of the billionaire Marcel Silverstein would be married into their family.

I  suddenly remember that Matt started acting weird just days after the news of my father being kicked out of the board of directors of his company was publicized. And his mother and sister stopped picking my calls and suddenly everyone was too busy to see or meet up with me. Surely, this has nothing to do with Matt’s sudden decision to end the engagement, right?

I looked up and saw Matt watching me closely.

“Is this because of my dad?”

He avoided my eyes as he stammered “Not really. Well we are aware your family is bankrupt now but that’s not why. You know I love you baby girl but right now I don't think we are ready for such a big step. You know marriage is a lot of work.”

I gasped and tried to stop my tears from falling. He couldn't look me in the face and I could tell he was lying.

“Then why!” I  screamed.

I  saw the moment he decided to snap and stop playing nice with me. “Fine! You’re right. Your family is bankrupt and I have no use for a broke stupid bitch.”

I sat frozen in my seat as the tears I tried so hard to keep poured out of my eyes. I could feel my heart breaking into a million tiny pieces.

“What am I going to do with you? You’re useless to me and my family now. You’re a spoilt daddy’s girl that no longer has daddy’s money. I’m sorry but I’m done with this rubbish. You’re annoying and you whine about everything, the money made it bearable being with you but now. I’m done.”

He reached over the table, grabbed my hand and forcefully pulled out the engagement ring he gave me from my finger, scratching my hand and drawing blood in the process.

“Don’t try to call me or come close to my family. We don’t want anything to do with broke bitches anymore. I'm off to work, today is a busy day for me."

He gave one last look at me and walked out of the coffee shop leaving me shaking and crying. I watched him walk away and drive off in the ferari my dad got him as a surprise after their engagement party.

I could feel the stares of the other people in the shop as I sobbed loudly and could hear them mumbling and pointing in my direction. I quickly picked my bag up and ran out of the shop.
