Chapter 4

Author: Whimsical Wind
That evening, the doorbell rang.

The butler opened the door, and an elegantly dressed woman walked inside.

It was Kristina Wynn, Caden's childhood friend. In their social circles, it was an unspoken assumption that she was the one destined to be the true Mrs. Bradley.

As our eyes met, a perfectly rehearsed flicker of surprise brushed across her features.

"Oh? Is Ms. Kennedy home as well?"

Ms. Kennedy. Never Mrs. Bradley.

For the past three years, she'd always addressed me that way. I never used to care.

Now it irritated me.

[Oh great. The queen of jealousy is here. Out of all the women on the planet, she is easily Dad’s least favorite. No one else even comes close. Whenever she stops by, his frown gets so intense he could practically swat flies with his eyebrows.

[Mom, forget the pleasantries. Give it to her straight.]

I leaned lazily against the sofa without moving. Then I gave her a calm glance. "Can I help you with something, Miss Wynn?"

Kristina sat down across from me, as if she owned the place, elegantly smoothing the skirt over her knees.

"I came to see Caden and Mrs. Bradley as well." She smiled gently. "Caden seems especially busy lately. He looks exhausted."

Her gaze drifted meaningfully toward my stomach. "Given your pregnancy, you really ought to be more considerate of his situation. After all, the weight of the Bradley family business isn’t something just anyone can manage."

The words sounded caring on the surface, but every sentence was carefully sharpened.

You’re immature.

You’re a burden.

You came from nothing and contribute nothing to his world.

In the past, I would've quietly endured it because, deep down, I thought she was right.

But today?

I had no interest in swallowing it anymore.

Slowly, I straightened up and rested a hand over my rounded stomach. "As his wife, I believe I understand Caden's state of mind better than you do, regardless of how tired he may or may not be."

I offered her a faint smile. "So I won't trouble an outsider like you to concern yourself about him."

My sudden retaliation clearly caught her off guard; she wasn't used to the docile, passive version of me fighting back.

However, her composure returned almost instantly.

"Ms. Kennedy, you've misunderstood me. I didn't mean anything by it." She lowered her eyes delicately. "I just want what's best for Caden. We grew up together, after all..."

[Here we go again. The childhood memories routine. Every single time. Aren't they tired of recycling the same stories?

[One time, she tried touching Dad’s cufflinks, and he dodged her like she carried a contagious disease. Dad even said her perfume smelled like cheap air freshener.]

I nearly lost control of my expression.

My voice wasn't loud, but in the dead silence of the hallway, it landed like a thunderclap. All the color drained from Caden's face instantly.Even Vivian froze for a second before a smug, satisfied smile slowly spread across her lips.I turned and walked away immediately, refusing to stay there another second. Tears burned behind my eyes, but I forced myself not to let them fall. After all, my dignity was the only thing I had left. Then suddenly, a powerful grip clamped around my wrist as Caden yanked me back toward him. With his other hand, he snatched the divorce papers off the floor and tore them apart violently. The shredded pieces scattered through the air like a snowstorm."I'm not divorcing you!"His voice exploded through the hallway, raw with panic and fury unlike anything I'd ever heard from him before. His eyes were bloodshot as he stared at me. He looked like a beast cornered with nowhere left to run.[Whoa! I just woke up! What happened?![Dad was practically a

I changed my clothes and put on a light layer of makeup. Then I picked up the Thermos I'd prepared earlier and drove to the hospital.I wasn't there to interrogate anyone, and I definitely wasn't there to cry. Instead, I was there to make a statement. The moment I pushed open the hospital room door, the scene inside matched the photo perfectly.Caden's mother sat elegantly on the sofa, sipping tea.Kristina remained seated beside the bed, still holding Grandma Bradley's hand. The second they saw me, I caught the flash of triumph in Vivian's eyes.Meanwhile, Kristina stood up and offered me a provocative little smile. "Lara, what brings you here?"Clearly, they expected me to storm in like some hysterical wife and start causing a scene.Unfortunately for them, I ignored both of them completely. Instead, I walked straight toward Caden. The moment he saw me, surprise and panic flashed across his face. "Why are you here?""I brought you some soup."After opening the Thermos and

My cold got better.Somehow, the tension between Caden and me softened, too.He stopped deliberately avoiding me. He still didn't talk much, but at least now, he would sit across from me during meals instead of disappearing into the study.I noticed the subtle tremble of his fingers whenever he picked food onto my plate and the way he quietly left a light on in the hallway whenever I got up in the middle of the night. These were minor shifts that were seemingly trivial gestures.Nonetheless, they felt like spring rain reaching the parched emptiness within me after a bitter, endless winter. For the first time in years, I started wondering if maybe we could actually live like a real married couple. Then a single phone call from the Bradley family estate shattered everything.Sarah Bradley, Caden's grandmother, who was the one person who had always loved him most, had suddenly been rushed into emergency treatment. The moment he answered the call, all the color drained from his fa

The next morning, I came down with a cold. It was probably from wandering around barefoot for too long the night before. My head felt heavy, my throat burned, and every inch of me felt miserable.I had just reached for my phone to call the family doctor when the bedroom door suddenly slammed open.Caden rushed inside. There were dark circles under his eyes so obvious that it was clear he'd been up all night. The second he saw the unnatural flush on my cheeks, his expression changed instantly. He strode toward me and instinctively reached for my forehead, only to jerk his hand back halfway there, like he was afraid touching me would hurt me somehow.[Dad is panicking! He is losing it! He spent the entire night doomscrolling relationship forums and didn't find a single useful answer![Now Mom's sick and his brain has completely crashed!]Caden abruptly turned and headed for the door while pulling out his phone."Dr. Joey Bolton! Get to the villa immediately. Right now." His voice

The air seemed to freeze solid. Time stretched unbearably long.Caden's lips moved slightly, but no sound came out. For the first time ever, I saw genuine panic and fear in his eyes, like a child caught red-handed hiding something precious.Somehow, seeing him like this only made my tears fall harder. My chest felt warm and aching all at once.Honestly, I almost wanted to laugh.[Oh no. Dad's secret base has been exposed. His CPU is overheating. He's definitely panicking right now, trying to figure out how to explain this without sounding like a creep. Dad! Say something already!]I sniffed quietly and tried to steady my emotions. Then I stood up from the floor and clasped the necklace around my neck. The cool diamonds rested against my skin.Slowly, I walked toward him.Under his completely flustered stare, I curved my lips into a faint smile, then deliberately leaned closer, tilting my neck toward him."Does it look good on me?"My voice remained thick from my previous tears

That night, Caden disappeared into the study again. Like always, he never came back out.I lay in bed tossing and turning, unable to sleep. My mind was a complete mess. The baby’s voice.Caden’s burning red ears.Kristina crying as she ran out of the villa.Everything that had happened today had shattered the image I'd built of him over the past three years.[Mom can't sleep. Is she thinking about Dad?[Dad isn't sleeping either. He's in the study looking at her photo again. The ultrasound picture. He's practically staring holes through it.[Seriously, keeping up with these two and their emotional repression is absolutely exhausting.]I slowly sat up in bed. Something inside me kept urging me forward. I had to look and find out for myself.Barefoot, I quietly made my way to the study, where the door wasn't locked. Carefully, I turned the handle and pushed it open just enough to peek inside.Caden sat at the desk alone. From behind, he looked strangely lonely. He was holding
