Chapter 9

Auteur: Dear Elpis
Jeremy jogged up. "You okay?"

I nodded. "I'm fine."

He glanced at Todd, then looked down at me. "Your boyfriend?"

"Ex-boyfriend."

"Here to win you back?"

"Yeah."

Jeremy swallowed whatever he was going to say next and nervously rubbed his hands together.

Noticing his hesitation, I added, "If we were getting back together, he wouldn't be an ex."

His steps instantly grew lighter. "Well, if you ever have any questions at work, just ask me. I'll tell you everything I know."

I nodded. Out of

Jeremy jogged up. "You okay?"I nodded. "I'm fine."He glanced at Todd, then looked down at me. "Your boyfriend?""Ex-boyfriend.""Here to win you back?""Yeah."Jeremy swallowed whatever he was going to say next and nervously rubbed his hands together.Noticing his hesitation, I added, "If we were getting back together, he wouldn't be an ex."His steps instantly grew lighter. "Well, if you ever have any questions at work, just ask me. I'll tell you everything I know."I nodded. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Todd still standing in the same spot. His shoulders were slumped, his posture so listless it looked like every trace of energy had drained out of him....A few days passed with Todd never showing up again. I figured he had finally gone back. One day, I happened to come across Lula's social media. She had posted a group photo from a high school reunion with the caption: [More than a decade of friendship, ruined by an outsider's few words.]I had no idea what had h

When I stepped out of the restaurant, Todd was still glaring fixedly at Jeremy. I called out to him, and he finally followed me to a quiet corner with a dark expression."You broke up with me because of him?" he demanded. My nails dug into my palm as I let out a helpless sigh. "After all this time, you still don't understand why I left?"He looked like he hadn't shaved in days. His chin was covered in stubble, and his eyes were bloodshot from a lack of sleep.Hearing my question, he stared at the ground. His voice came out hoarse. "I remembered. You really are allergic to peaches. That peach spritzer could have sent you to the hospital."Then Lula made you another one and bought you a peach crepe cake. She booked the rooftop restaurant even though you're afraid of heights. You have every reason to be mad. I'm sorry."I was speechless. He had flown all the way here, and the only things he could comprehend were these surface-level mistakes. My brow furrowed. "So, you came to apolo

Todd hadn't even considered buying a different kind of flower. The HR assistant had work to do and asked him to leave. Outside, the rain fell harder, blurring everything. The graduation photo on my phone and those two academic gowns crossed his mind. He finally remembered the gowns weren't rented. He had bought them for our future wedding photos. But he had thrown the box away. What else was inside it? Our graduation pictures, anniversary gifts, and the photo album I made for him.As the wind and rain whipped around him, a crack of thunder split the sky. Todd yanked open his car door and drove off like a madman....After I joined the new company, my days were quiet and steady. The short commute meant no crowded subway and an extra hour of sleep. No matter what time I woke up, breakfast was already set on the table by my parents. My lunch and afternoon fruit were packed in the fridge. I didn't have to worry about allergies; I could just grab them and go.In this calm routine

While Todd frantically pressed the elevator button, Lula sobbed on the phone. "Has Harper really left? It's all my fault for buying her that peach crepe cake and the drinks. I'm so sorry."Lula had always been the lively one, so hearing her talk like this upset him. When the elevator reached the ground floor, Todd's first thought wasn't chasing me.He drove straight to Lula's place in case she did something stupid. After making sure she was okay, he stayed with her until morning. As he was leaving, Lula grabbed his hand. "Is Harper really not coming back?"He forced a confident smile. "She's just throwing a tantrum. She'll cool off."But now staring at the peach chunks in the crepe cake, he wasn't so sure anymore....Three days later, it rained.Todd stared out the window from the moment he woke up, eager to welcome me if I returned. But work called him in to handle a massive backlog.Without a choice, he begged our neighbor to call him if I came back. The neighbor looked co

The elevator descended. When I stepped out of the building, the night was quiet. The cab driver helped load my suitcase into the trunk."Didn't leave anything behind, did you?" he said. "Going to the airport this late, it'll be a massive pain to come back if you forget something."I slid into the backseat. "No. Anything left behind is just trash anyway. Let's go."The car pulled out of the neighborhood. Half an hour later, just as we were nearing the airport, Todd's call finally came through."What now?" he grumbled. "What do you mean by not coming back? Who said anything about a breakup? Aren't you just visiting your parents for a few days?"I watched the dark trees blur past the window. I had lived in this city for seven years, ever since my freshman year of college. After dating with Todd, every single day of mine had revolved around him. Yet, leaving it now, I didn't feel a shred of regret."I've never thrown a tantrum with you," I replied calmly."Because I asked you to b

I cut him off. "I'm allergic to peaches."Todd froze. "What? Since when?""Since I was born.""Then why didn't you tell me earlier? Lula picked it out specially. You're wasting her kindness!"I turned to see him holding a fork, looking irritated. He noticed my expression, then let out a heavy, dramatic sigh, as though he were making a grand concession."Fine. No more peach flavors for you from now on, okay?" he said, his tone still condescending. He genuinely believed that I was just throwing a tantrum and that a minor compromise would make everything go away."Yeah." I didn't bother correcting him.I just turned around and tucked my documents into my handbag.Todd sat at the table, eating the cake. "Going on a business trip?"I shrugged. "Back to my hometown."He nodded thoughtlessly. "You haven't been back in a while. Oh, Lula mentioned she loved the yogurt from your hometown, and she really liked the local chili sauce, too."Bring some back for her. Make sure to check th
