Chapter 24 - In Plain Sight

The midday sun reflected sharp and bright across the campus's main courtyard, making the row of angsana trees lining the footpath shimmer under the light. Hours like this were usually reserved for Michi's time in the central library, tucked into the quietest corner she could find, wrapped around a stack of thick classical music encyclopedias, making absolutely sure her presence never caught anyone's eye. It was a habit she'd built so carefully, over so many years, that she'd never once had to think about it—until today, when following it would have meant letting go of Rimba's hand first.

But today, her footsteps carried her down the main walkway with an entirely different rhythm altogether.

Beside her, Rimba walked with one hand tucked casually into the pocket of his leather jacket, while his other hand held her fingers tightly.

The contrast was too obvious for anyone passing by to ignore. Michi, in her cream knit cardigan, neat black midi skirt, and the aura of a model student known for years as cold and entirely untouchable. On her right, Rimba—the campus band's vocalist, with his careless style, a piercing in his left ear, and a sling bag that looked thrown together at best.

The whispers that had once been nothing more than a faint hum in the corridors now turned into open, unguarded stares from other students. A few underclassmen even stopped walking altogether, mouths slightly parted, unable to believe the rare sight in front of them.

Michi felt her old reflex flare up for a moment—the urge to pull her hand back, straighten her clothes, or quicken her pace to escape the spotlight. But before that hesitation could redirect her steps, the grip on her fingers tightened, as if offering her something solid to hold onto in the middle of a storm of attention she'd spent her whole life trying never to attract.

Rimba glanced over briefly, catching the small flicker of doubt on her face out of the corner of his eye. Without slowing his pace, he lifted their loosely joined hands into the air, as if deliberately showing the entire campus that there was nothing left worth hiding behind the shadow of that basement studio anymore.

"What, scared your aesthetic score's going to drop from being seen walking around with a scruffy band kid?" Rimba whispered, his tone thick with mischief, though the corner of his mouth curved into the calmest, most reassuring smile in the world.

Michi let out a soft huff, shaking off the nervous flutter in her chest with a long, steadying breath. She lifted her chin, staring straight ahead with an elegant tilt of her head—no longer the cold, defensive expression she used to wear, but the absolute calm of someone who had finally freed herself from her own pride.

"It's not my aesthetic score that's dropping," Michi replied evenly, her voice clear against the midday wind. "It's the campus cafeteria's reputation that's going to be buzzing all day, now that someone's finally proven they can stand walking beside you for more than five minutes without starting a fight."

Rimba laughed easily, that deep baritone sound drawing even more curious glances their way. "Let them buzz all they want. Everyone's been dying to know for ages who the guy is that could finally wreck an Arunika's perfectly rigid score sheet."

They kept walking side by side, passing through the main lobby toward a small café across the street from campus—the exact spot Michi used to avoid on principle, precisely because it was always crowded. This time, though, she didn't reach for the corner table hidden behind the potted plants the way she usually would. She chose the seats near the large glass window facing straight out onto the main road, letting the sunlight fall directly across both their faces without any barrier between them and the world, without a single thought spared for who might see them from the sidewalk outside.

A café server came by with the menu a moment later, though neither of them opened it right away. Rimba ordered two cups of black coffee in an easy, unhurried tone, his eyes never once leaving Michi's face, as if he kept finding something new and endlessly worth watching in every passing second. Outside, the flow of traffic and the murmur of students drifted in faintly through the thick glass, as if the outside world had entirely lost its power to disturb the new calm the two of them now shared.

Michi took a sip of water from the glass in front of her, feeling a warmth spread through her that came from somewhere deeper than the drink itself—from an inner certainty that now, fully, settled her chest.

For the first time, Michi felt the outside world no longer demanded that she perform flawlessly through every single measure of her life. And across from her, Rimba proved that falling in love didn't always have to follow some complicated set of rules; sometimes, all it took was the courage to hold someone's hand under the blaze of the afternoon sun, and let the whole world see that the two of you had finally chosen to walk the same path.

They stayed there a while longer after the coffee arrived, talking about nothing in particular—which songs Bara had butchered in rehearsal, whether Professor Hendra would ever loosen up before graduation, whether the campus gossip would still be interesting by the following week. It was an ordinary conversation, the kind Michi had never once allowed herself to have with anyone, out in the open, unguarded, without a single calculation running underneath it about what it might cost her later. For once, being seen didn't feel like exposure. It felt, strangely, like relief—like setting down a weight she hadn't fully realized she'd been carrying for years, one table, one glass window, one held hand at a time. By the time they finally stood to leave, the coffee long gone cold, neither of them had once glanced toward the door to check who might be watching.

Two weeks passed since that night on the porch, and slowly, the rhythm of their life together began finding its shape again. The campaign video never resurfaced. Not because Surya had truly given up—Rimba knew his father well enough to know that a man like that never truly stops, only waits for a more advantageous moment. The last update to reach Rimba's ears was that his father's media team had their hands full managing the agenda ahead of next year's election season, and for the time being, neither Rimba's name nor Michi's was useful enough to bother with. The threat hadn't disappeared. It was only sleeping, waiting for a better time to wake up again. What he knew for certain was that, for the first time in years, he was no longer carrying every anxiety that surfaced from his father's shadow alone. Every time that name crossed his mind, he told Michi about it, sometimes Bayu too, sometimes Kelana over the long phone calls they'd started making a regular habit e

Michi was rearranging some sheet music in her room when the notification sound on her phone rang out—a message from Rimba, brief but different from the empty messages she'd been receiving so often lately, the kind that used to arrive hours late with nothing real inside them.I'm outside your house. Can I come in? I promise, this time I'll tell you everything. She stared at that screen for a long time before finally heading downstairs, opening the front door with a hand that trembled slightly. Rimba stood there, his face tired but his eyes showing something different from the past few weeks—no longer that evasive look, but a seriousness he rarely ever showed. They sat on the front porch, among the potted flowers Akari usually tended, lit by the dim yellow light that evening, the same porch light that had watched over every homecoming and every quiet argument this family had ever had."Chi, I'm sorry," Rimba said, starting with

Maharani's dance studio was still lit even though the hour had grown late, dim lights illuminating the wooden floor her students usually used to practice Pakarena dance in the afternoons. The building was otherwise silent, the kind of silence that only settles into a place built for music and movement once both have gone quiet for the night. Rimba found his mother alone there, sitting cross-legged in the middle of the empty room, staring silently at the large mirror reflecting her own image back at her."Not asleep yet, Ma?" Rimba stepped inside, sitting down on the floor not far from his mother."Hard to sleep with a head this full of thoughts." Maharani turned, smiling thinly at the sight of her eldest son's tired face, far more tired than he usually let show. "You look the same way, Rim. What's wrong?"For a few moments, Rimba simply sat still, staring at his own reflection in the mirror, trying to arrange words that had felt too heavy to say out loud for wee

Michi hadn't spoken much since that night in the studio. She still went to her classes as usual, still smiled in front of her parents, still answered every question at the dinner table the way she always had, but Bayu—who had grown up learning to read his sister since childhood—knew perfectly well that something was wrong behind that thin, forced smile. He didn't ask right away. Bayu wasn't the type to push someone to talk before they were ready, a restraint he'd learned the hard way after his first, clumsy attempt to interrogate Rimba in this same basement months earlier. But this time, he pointed his old habit—following political news, digging through the track records of public figures purely as material for casual class debates—toward one name that had kept appearing on his social media timeline these past few weeks: Surya Pratama. That night, in his room, Bayu sat for hours combing through old news archives, political discussion forums, eve

Ten days passed since that meeting, and the campaign video that had briefly caused an uproar was finally taken down quietly, as though it had never existed at all. For everyone else, the problem felt resolved. For Rimba, that was exactly where his unease truly began. He knew his father wasn't going to stop that easily. And the only solution he could think of to make sure Michi wasn't targeted again was to distance himself—to make the two of them look no longer close enough to be turned into material for any story. He started canceling plans one by one, quietly, without ever framing it as what it actually was. The excuse of "a lot of studio work" became the sentence that left his mouth most often. Replies to messages that used to come quickly now arrived hours later, short, half-hearted. Even in the basement studio, the very place that had once witnessed the beginning of all their secrets, Rimba started showing up alone at odd hours more often, leaving behind mess

The message came through personal WhatsApp, not from any group—just a link with no long explanation, sent directly by Bayu to Michi's phone, followed by one of his characteristically brief sentences.Sis, this is your boyfriend, right?Michi opened the link with her brow furrowed, and the next second her blood seemed to stop flowing entirely. An official promotional video from Rimba's father's political party's social media account appeared on the screen—thirty seconds long, titled "Young Generation, the Nation's Future," featuring a clip from the modern sonata collaboration concert Michi and Rimba had once performed together at the Swasemesta Conservatory, months before they'd officially gotten together—the official campus recording that had once been covered by a few local media outlets for its bold breakthrough in fusing classical and contemporary music. The video had been edited a certain way, the party logo blinking in the corner of the
