Gerald stood up, looking around the room as if seeking a way out. "For what it's worth, I'm sorry," he said. "I'm not in the right frame of mind to continue this conversation, so I'll excuse myself. Please come by the house tomorrow once we've all cooled off. We can talk more then." He glanced at me, adding, "Is that acceptable?" Knox snorted from the table, his amusement evident.

I shot him a glare, then turned to Kael, who nodded his agreement. "Fine," I said. "What time?"

Missy suggested noon, which sounded okay. She and Gerald left, the door closing with a soft thud. I turned back to Kael, who seemed to think that his parents' departure meant he was off the hook. He stood and tried to hug me, but I shrugged him off.

"You can't respond like that anymore," I said. "I know it's hard to control these emotions, especially now, but you can't be tearing up our home. We might have kids living here. I need to know you can keep yourself in check."
