The knock on my door came just after two in the afternoon, sharp and impatient, three quick raps that made my stomach tighten before I even opened it.

Ivan stood on the other side, arms crossed over his chest, filling most of the doorway. He was one of Silas's men, the quiet, broad shouldered kind who never smiled and never explained more than he had to.

"Get your coat," he said, no greeting. "You're going shopping."

I blinked at him. "Shopping."

"Boss wants you seen. A woman with your money do

"Get up right now! We do not have time for you to sleep!" Ivan shouted, rudely shaking my shoulder to wake me up.I sat up on the bed, rubbing my groggy eyes. "What is going on, Ivan? Why are you barging into my room at this time of night?"Ivan completely ignored my question. He thrust a dark wig into my hands, along with a makeup kit and a set of plain, worn clothes."Put these on immediately," Ivan ordered, his tone cold and rigid. "We leave in two minutes."I hated this overwhelming feeling of control slipping out of my hands, but I had no choice. I went with the flow, stripping off my silk pajamas and transforming myself back into Vivian. Looking into the vanity mirror, I felt uneasy. The transformation felt barely convincing, especially after everything I had done, the surgeries, the voice training, and the posture changes, to become Veronica Vance."Are you going to stare at yourself all night?" Ivan snapped, grabbing my wrist to pull me away from the mirror. "Move your legs!"

Julian’s POV"Bring me the latest portrait photograph of Veronica Vance right now," I barked into my desk phone, slamming my palm onto the polished wood.Even though my digital signature was already recorded on her loan document, a deep, restless agitation gnawed at my chest. That sudden, violent slap in her suite kept replaying in my head. Veronica had always been ruthless and proud, but the raw, unscripted fury in her eyes felt wildly out of place. My assistant hurried into the office, placing a crisp, high-resolution photo on my desk before retreating without a word.I picked up the picture, holding it close to the light. I traced every line of her sharp jaw, her polished eyes, and her arched brows, searching frantically for whatever missing piece my mind was failing to grasp. Something was wrong. The woman in the suite looked like Veronica, spoke like Veronica, yet the atmosphere around her felt strangely off.Unable to shake the suffocating suspicion, I tossed the photo onto the

"I am sorry about earlier, Veronica," Julian said, his hands moving nervously as he walked back into my living room, his eyes scanning my face for any remaining anger. "I genuinely thought we shared a mutual connection, and I was just...""Stop talking, Julian," I said, holding up a hand to cut him off immediately as an uncomfortable, heavy silence settled between us. "What happened just now was not entirely your fault. I was simply thinking about a bitter ghost from my past."Julian blinked, his brow furrowing as his eyes searched my expression. "Give me a name, Veronica. Who made you look like that? Who hurt you?""It is not needed," I said, shaking my head with a cold, flat expression that left no room for further questioning. "The man has already been taken care of."Julian swallowed hard, his shoulders relaxing slightly as he let out a quiet breath. "Alright. If you say so."I took a slow, deliberate breath, stepping back toward the dining table to fully assume Veronica’s cold, b

"Get your hands off me, Julian!" I screamed, the touch of his lips sending a jolt of pure nausea through my entire body.I pushed against his chest, trying desperately to create distance between us, but his grip on my waist only tightened. He was ignoring my resistance, leaning in further as if he had every right to touch me. The sheer audacity of the man who framed me, who stole three years of my youth, touching me with fake affection broke something inside my head. Before I could process the action, my right hand flew forward and cracked across his cheek with a loud, stinging slap.Julian’s head snapped to the side. He stumbled back, holding his face in complete disbelief."Veronica?" he gasped, his cheek turning bright red. "What was that for?"I did not answer him. My legs moved on their own, walking briskly over to the large glass window, completely forgetting that I was supposed to be faking a weak, painful stomach limp. I pressed my forehead against the cool glass, trying to ca

"What are you doing here at midnight, Julian?" I asked, my voice trembling as panic surged through my chest.Panic threatened to choke me as I stood in the doorway. Through the tinted glass of the elevator walls, it was clear Silas could not see us clearly, but he was standing right there. I grabbing Julian’s arm, yanked him into the apartment, and slammed the door shut.Julian turned around to look at the hallway, but I gasped loudly and bent over, clutching my stomach."Ah, my stomach," I groaned, making a face of intense pain. "Julian, please, get me a glass of water from the kitchen. Quickly.""Are you okay?" Julian asked, his brow furrowing as he took a step back. "Where is the kitchen?""Straight down the hall, on the right," I panted, keeping my hands glued to my midsection. As soon as he turned his back and rushed down the corridor, I whipped open the front door by an inch. I looked through the gap and caught Silas’s eyes as he stepped out of the elevator. I pointed two finger

Chapter 10"Get inside, Vivian, and stop staring at the pavement," Silas said, his hand tightening on my elbow as he pulled me through a heavy wooden door. The smell of stale beer and fried food hit my nose immediately."A pub, Silas? Really?" I whispered, looking around at the sticky tables and the dim neon signs. "I do not think the Baroness belongs here.""That is exactly why we are here," Silas said, steering me to a small booth in the back corner. "It is the last place anyone would look for you."I was not born rich, but my family had never frequented places like this, and the rowdy atmosphere made my stomach twist with nerves. A weary bartender with a dirty apron over his shoulder appeared beside our table."What can I get you two?" the bartender asked."Just water for me, please," I said quickly.Silas gave a short, dry laugh. "Water is not allowed in a place like this. Give her a Cosmopolitan. And I will have a neat whiskey."The bartender nodded and shuffled away.Once he was
