If her life were any more boring, she’d be six feet under. Tabby Stuart had this sobering thought as she looked past her reflection in the large plate glass window and out into the dark night as snowflakes started to fall slowly onto the city street below.
Another Friday night and Tabby was still sitting at her desk in the high-rise office building that was home to many companies, including the accounting firm that employed her. She’d always been a hard worker but lately it had become an absolute obsession. She’d needed to work harder, longer hours to make partner. She’d given up her social life in order to accomplish this goal, but in doing so had managed to give up all other goals in her life. Goals like finding love and having friends. This year, she’d set out to change things.
She looked down at her desktop calendar and noted that it was already the first of February and she wasn’t any closer to accomplishing her New Year’s resolution than she had been a month ago. She thought back to the office party during which she’d leaned against the back wall and watched her drunken co-workers battle it out with the worst karaoke of all time.
She’d made a promise to herself that this year would be different. Now that all her hard work had paid off and she’d been named a partner, she’d resolved to lead a more exciting life. She’d try to be more like her sister. She thought of her sister and how she lived a seemingly carefree life. She was always on the go as a fashion photographer. She brushed elbows with famous people on a daily basis. She had a zest for life that Tabby had somehow never achieved. Tabby had always been the diligent, hard worker of the two sisters, the responsible one.
While Tabby had gone to college and then studied hard for her CPA exam, her sister had never attended college and instead had used her tuition money to buy a bunch of expensive photography equipment and take a tour of the world. She’d come home and turned those photos into a portfolio and had been quickly working her way up as a hotshot photographer ever since.
Meanwhile, Tabby was making a good living as a financially sound accountant in one of the most prestigious accounting and investment firms in New York City. She had wanted to be the first woman partner in the firm and she was willing to put in the long hours necessary to accomplish this goal. In order to do this, she’d had to sacrifice her social life completely. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d had a date and as far as sex was concerned…she wasn’t even sure that she’d remember how the pieces fit together.
She sighed as she pressed her fingertips to her temples and then looked at her waiting computer screen. The cursor mocked her as it waited for her to input more figures into the accounting spreadsheet that she was creating. Her eyes felt blurry from staring at the screen too long. The clock read eleven-thirty and she was ready to call it quits.
She stood and gathered her purse from her desk drawer and her coat from the back of the door. She locked her office and headed for the elevators. As she made her descent, she watched the numbers count down from fifteen to the parking levels below the building. She was parked on G3 and when the elevator finally came to a stop with a small bounce, she exited and made a left turn towards her car.
She took a few steps and then realized that her silver BMW was not there. She stopped and looked around. Her car was nowhere to be seen. She started to walk towards the ramp that led up to the next level, but she knew she’d parked here this morning. She was sure of it.
She took a few tentative steps up the ramp, thinking maybe she had parked one level up. If not, then there had to be some other explanation. There was a guarded booth at the top of the parking deck and Sam would be on duty. If she couldn’t find her car she’d have to get Sam to call the police. How could anyone have stolen her car out of a secure parking garage? Her mind suddenly felt tired and bogged down with stress.
Just then she heard the sound of screeching tires and she turned to see a black Mercedes bearing down on her at an unsafe speed. Her mind started screaming, “Run! Move!” but her legs were frozen in place. She just stood there with her mouth open in disbelief.
She saw the car come to a screeching stop just inches from her legs and she heard the sound of the door handles clicking as both the back doors swung open simultaneously. She didn’t wait to see who was about to exit the car. Something about that car seemed ominous and without another thought she turned and started to run up the ramp.
She didn’t make it very far when a strong pair of arms engulfed her from behind and she felt a hard chest being pressed into her back. The arms pressed her chest so tightly she thought she might faint. It was difficult to gain the air needed to let out a scream when her lungs were being compressed by the vice-like arms.
Then she felt something sharp and cold touch the back of her neck and she saw nothing but darkness.
Steele searched the house and knew in the first ninety seconds that Tabby hadn’t left of her own free will and that it had been Tremaine who had taken her. After he found the wet towel and cleared the ground floor, he’d found two pairs of foot prints leading out of the bathroom and down the hall. The most troubling part was that both of the foot prints were men-sized and wearing shoes. That could only mean that one of them was carrying Tabby. They’d grabbed her right out of the shower. Naked, scared, and all alone. His heart had nearly exploded out of his chest at the thought and he’d had to depend heavily on his training to keep his heart rate in check. He knew that they wouldn’t immediately kill her because no matter what, she was great leverage for both her sister and for him. They were assholes, but they weren’t stupid. He knew Tremaine and he knew that he only wanted two things–his money and Tabby’s sister. He didn’t do too well with betrayal and Trish wouldn’t survive ten min
For the second time in as many days, Tabby awoked to find herself tied up. Only this time, she wasn't looking into the handsome face of Steele.Instead, she was looking at the inside of what appeared to be a dungeon cell. She tried her arms and legs but they were both bound and she was spread eage on a dingy mattress on the floor. She was also completely naked.Tears burned her eyes and she hoped and prayed that she hadn't been molested in any way. She just wasn't sure. Her whole body ached and she could feel her left eye swelling where Tremaine's hard, bony fist had knocked her completely unconcious in Steele's bathroom. She tried to take slow, deep breaths. A panic attack was creeping just below the surface and she it felt difficult to take a full breath. She wondered if Steele even knew she was missing. For all she knew, he was still at work and had no idea that Tremaine and his goons had found her and taken her.She had no idea where she was, how long she'd been there, and if sh
Gavin “Steele” McSteeley was tired. He felt the exhaustion creeping up his neck and he squeezed the taut muscles with his left hand as he maneuvered the car back towards home. His mind was swirling with so many different thoughts and emotions that he felt drained. He feared his undercover operation that he’d been working day and night for months now was over and that he’d not managed to collect enough hard evidence to put Tremaine away. People had a habit of mysteriously disappearing around Tremaine and Steele had been very eager to be the one to take him down. He didn’t like the man and he wanted him to spend the rest of his life behind bars for the multitude of laws that he’d broken over the years. He had some evidence but he wasn’t sure it was enough to get the kinds of convictions he wanted against the crooked man. Tremaine and his crew of thugs were off the radar and no one had spotted him since early this morning. It was getting close to sunset now and s
Tabby awoke for the second time, but this time it was late afternoon. Following their incredible sex, she’d curled up in bed beside Gavin and slept soundly. She’d been lulled into a safe, warm, calming sleep by his slow, rhythmic breathing and the feel of his hands caressing her back. She hadn't dreamt, but instead, actually rested and renewed her mind. Now, she rolled and stretched and felt better than she had in ages. She looked at her wrists and there were no indications of where she’d been bound to the chair the night before. She thought about the fact that it was Gavin who had taken her to Tremaine’s penthouse and bound her to the chair. He’d been playing a role, but he’d taken care to be sure that she was never harmed. She felt the coolness on the empty sheets beside her. She’d not even been aware of him slipping out of bed. As she lay there in the silence, she gazed at the late afternoon sun as it cut across the foot of the bed. The town home was complete
When she’d finally reached the end of her climax, he looked up at her. Her face was flushed and her eyes were dilated wide with pleasure. He’d never seen anything or anyone look exactly like that. “Dammit, that’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen,” he said. “What is?” she asked with a raspy voice. “Your face, after you came.” “I want you,” she said, matter-of-factly. With that declaration, he lifted her off the counter and into his arms and began to ascend the stairs to his bedroom. He gently placed her on the cool sheets and watched as chill bumps formed on her naked body. Seeing her in his FBI shirt had been sexy as hell but the body underneath was better than he ever could have imagined. Her breasts were high and firm with small, pink nipples that formed tight little peaks as he circled the palm of his hand over them. He lay down next to her on his side and stroked her bare abdomen with his fingers. Slowly, she sat up and pushed him down to lay flat on his
Tabby awoke to the unmistakable sounds and smells of early morning. The smell of fresh coffee brewing made her roll over and stretch like a cat. She blinked her eyes at the soft rays of sunlight that had begun to creep through the slat in the nearby window. She crossed her arms under her pillow and behind her head as she listened to the soft, tinkling sounds of dishes being stacked and moved in the kitchen. She’d had a rough night. She vaguely remembered noting the time on the clock as her head hit the pillow in the early morning hours, she knew that it was now late Saturday morning and she was in Gavin McSteeley’s house. She pulled herself up into a sitting position and looked down at her smooth, bare legs. She wore only the oversized, blue, FBI t-shirt that Steele had placed outside the bathroom door last night. He’d also left a pair of matching jogging shorts but even with the elastic waistband, they were way too big for her small frame. She’d stayed in the hot shower fo
Max was no lightweight and it took Steele a little longer to put him out cold like he had the old man, Tremaine. He finally subdued him and wasted no time in his pursuit of the fleeing Rocco. He knew his actions had just about definitely blown his cover, but he had to worry about that later. Ri
At the sound of Tremaine’s voice, Tabby stilled her protests against Steele. She couldn’t see what was happening from her awkward position over Steele’s shoulder, but she could feel his body tense beneath her. “Why is she loose and why is she not naked in my bed by now?” Tremaine growled at t
He sat beside her and put his hand on her back. “Tabitha, what is going on? Who is Trish?” The gears in his mind started to turn as he tried to make sense of this. When she looked up, the tears in her eyes sent a stab of pain through his chest. She looked tired, scared, and hurt. He knew tha
