I sat staring out at the ocean for hours, or what felt like hours. My back was stiff by the time Gunnar’s car pulled up next to mine. He got out and sat down next to me on the hood of my Jeep. We sat in silence for a while and I felt like a bad friend. I hadn’t talked to him about anything that really mattered for weeks now. I was caught in my own web of confusion and guilt.

“What’s going on with you, Kai?” he finally asked me. I could hear it in his voice. He was worried about me but he was also a little irritated.

“It’s complicated,” I said.

“Then uncomplicate it. We’ve shared everything since forever. Whatever it is, I’m here,” Gunnar said.

“That’s just it, when I start talking you won’t be here anymore,” I said and realized too late that I’d said more than I should’ve said. I should’ve just kept my mouth shut.

“Kai, come on, man. It’s you and me, talk to me,” he said coaxingly.

“It’s my fault that Kari almost died,” I said and glanced at him.

“How could it possibly be your fault?”
