I called Kari’s number again, and with each word spoken, my heart sank more. It went to voicemail again, and I turned around. Kiran frowned as he put his glass down and looked at me with a worried expression on his face.

“What is it?” he asked me.

“Nobody knows where Kari is,” I said, and James walked over to us, as well. “Saga hasn’t spoken to her all day, and now her phone’s off.”

Levi took his phone out and dialed a number. “Bluebird, get me the location of the number I’m sending to you.” Levi typed on his phone, and went back to his conversation with Bluebird. He listened to whatever she was saying, then he ended the call.

“Her phone pinged from a tower in Sterling at 6 p.m.,” Levi said, as we stood apart from the rest of the people who had already arrived.

“That’s when I phoned her. It just rang and rang, and I assumed she might be busy getting ready.” I turned around and walked out of the room and into the garage. Kiran, Levi, and James followed me outside.

“Get in,” Levi said,

Kari stood in the boutique and looked at herself in the mirror. She turned from side to side and sighed. She liked the dress, but it just didn’t feel like the right one. She wished her mother was there. Shoran always had a great sense of style.“I don’t think blue’s really my color,” she said to the assistant, who smiled at her.“The emerald green dress will really compliment your coloring,” she said to Kari.“I’ll try it on next,” Kari said, with a smile. The assistant returned with the dress, and Kari smiled again. “It’s beautiful.”“I think it will look perfect on you,” the woman said.Kari put the dress on and stepped out of the dressing room. It fit her perfectly, and she knew this was the dress. She stood in front of the mirror again and studied herself. Would Kai like it? A light blush appeared on her cheeks, and she smiled again.Kari walked up to the pay station and placed the dress carefully on the counter. “I left my handbag in the car. Can you wrap this up for me? I’ll be

I was still in bed, my muscles still sore from the previous day’s extreme training with Kiran. Kari’s phone call had woken me up, and I wished I could just roll over and go back to sleep. I was still tired, even though I didn’t mind her waking me up.“I’ll see you tonight,” Kari said.“I haven’t seen you in four days,” I said.I’d been busy with Kiran and my family, spending time with Saga and William, and with my mother. It was nice to be home, and Kiran had gone overboard on the whole hotel thing. He took me to work with him every day, and tried to teach me everything he knew, so that when my acceptance came through, I’d be ready to complete my first year in one month. At least, that’s what it felt like.“Liar, we have breakfast together every morning. I do miss you, but I have to go get my dress. Imagine the rumors if I show up in something I’ve already worn,” she said, and chuckled. It was her resurrection later that night, and though it was barely 6 a.m., she was ready to head ou

Kiran crossed his arms on the counter and briefly closed his eyes. “I found out about Lucy when she was five–”“Dad, I shouldn’t have …” I began to say, but it was like he didn’t even hear me, or maybe, he just wanted to get it off his chest.“I didn’t tell your mother, because I didn’t want to hurt her again. I send Marissa money, and I pay for her schooling, and things like that. I see her whenever I go to Fresno, where I’m just Uncle Josh’s friend, she doesn’t know who I am to her.”“Dad, Lucy knows exactly who you are,” I said, and they both looked at me with a frown. I was surprised because Lucy had told me that she was going to confront Marissa with the news, that she wanted to know for sure, and meet Kiran as her father, and not just as a family friend. Obviously, she hadn’t, or she had, and Marissa hadn’t contacted Kiran yet.“How?” Kiran asked me. “Well, she didn’t say Kiran Sinclair is my father, or anything like that, but she suspects that you’re her father because of the

Adara walked down the stairs, and she looked up seeing me and Kiran. I walked toward her and hugged her tightly, and she started to cry. Kiran put his arms around both of us from the side, and we stood there, hugging each other.“I’m sorry, Mom. I never meant to hurt you,” I whispered.“I know,” she said, and I kissed her cheek. She wiped her tears after we all let go of each other and made coffee while we sat down at the kitchen counter. Kiran’s eyes followed her movements, and I felt worse for betraying his secret to her like that. It was obvious how much he loved my mother.“Are you staying with James?” Kiran asked me carefully, when Adara placed the mugs down in front of us.“I’m staying down at the Point, in one of the cabins. I wanted to give James and Kari some alone time, so she’s staying there,” I said.“Why would you stay at the Point when you have a home?” Adara asked me, and I chuckled.“When I made the reservation, I didn’t know I still had a home,” I said, and Adara gave

James finally put Kari back on her feet and let her go. She was still crying, and I could see the emotions in his eyes. “Kai.” He stretched his hand out, and I shook it.“Uncle James, safe and sound, as promised,” I said, and he smiled as he put his arm around my shoulder. We walked up the steps to the porch and into the living room.“You look good,” he said. I’d grown a few more inches over the last four months, and my exercise regimen had bulked me out more. I was probably as tall as Kiran now, and I had gained about 50 pounds, so now I was close to 220 pounds.“Thanks, I’ve been training hard,” I said, as we sat down, and he got beers from the kitchen and handed me one.“Where’s your bag?” he asked, since I’d only brought in Kari’s luggage from the Jeep.“I’m staying down at the Point. I wanted to give you some alone time with Kari,” I said, and he nodded.“I’m not going to say no thank you,” he said, and his face grew serious. “Have you spoken to your father?”“Not yet. It’s compl
