I shrugged and headed to my bedroom. There was a girl sitting on my bed and she watched me as I put my bag down next to my desk. She had deep purple marks around her neck and her eyes followed me as I moved around. She had probably hung herself.

“What do you want?” I asked her.

“She promised me that they would die,” she said and I turned to look at her.

“I can’t let her keep that promise, it’s wrong,” I said and she stood up. Her face was inches from mine and I could smell the decay on her.

“Then she’ll pay,” the girl said.

“I can promise you that they’ll pay for what they did,” I said.

“If you don’t keep this promise to my satisfaction, I’ll make you pay,” she said and pushed me up against the wall with her hand around my throat. She was strong and angry, her eyes were empty hollows of darkness, malicious and evil. She was gone in an instant and I stood against the wall and took a deep breath.

Saga started walking down the beach and every now and then she would stop and look over at the cluster of trees. It broke my heart to watch her and when I caught up to her, she started talking and I listened. She had really thought this through and she had been busy with a plan of her own for the last three months. Her plan also scared the shit out of me.“We have to do something, Kai,” she said and her eyes seemed to plead with mine.“I know, Sis, but luring them out to the forest and killing them? That’s murder. How are you planning to kill them once you have them here?” I asked her.“Dad has journals, death spells…” Her voice trailed off and my eyes widened.“No way! You know what happens when you do that! He almost died using death magic!” I said to her.We both grew up hearing the stories of the twelve witches that came to Seward to kill him, his time in Helheim and the physical pain you feel when you use that type of magic. Kiran had closed off that part of his life and he had n

The next few months went by and Saga had become withdrawn and spent more and more time by herself. She got like that sometimes and I wasn’t particularly worried. She had these weird phases she went through and it was best to just leave her alone when she got like that. She started a club at school for girls and whenever I asked her about it, she removed the memory, so eventually I stopped asking. The last few weeks though, she seemed more like herself and I felt like I could breathe easier. She laughed and talked and it seemed that emotionally she’d moved on. I still felt guilty about what had happened to her. She was my sister, I’d always feel guilty about it.What happened to Saga had affected me as well and it had taken me weeks to be myself again. I was constantly looking over my shoulder, wondering when the police would barge into our house and arrest me for murder. As the days passed though, I relaxed and slowly but surely I became myself again, much to Adara’s dismay. We didn’t

“I just heard her, she was trying to scream. I ran and I saw…I saw Greg on top of her. I just saw red. I hit him and he went down. I think I killed him,” I said to Kiran as he paced up and down in front of us.“Gunnar said they were all dead, details, Kai!” Kiran said harshly.“Kyle and Pete were holding her down. Gunnar pulled me off Kyle, he’s definitely dead,” I said.“And the other boy?” James asked and Gunnar looked down.“I bit him,” he said and looked up at his father.“You shifted in front of them?” James asked as he looked worriedly at Gunnar.“No, I shifted as I ran when I heard Kai yelling Saga’s name. They just saw a wolf coming out of the trees,” Gunnar said and looked at me.“They’re just as guilty, they were holding her down,” I said angrily. I could never unsee what I saw that night.“Calm down,” Kiran said and I sat down, feeling useless and helpless. I could see his mind working overtime and he finally stood up. He took his keys from the bowl and looked at James. “S

Six months later, Saga and I turned seventeen and we had a huge party down at the Point. The four of us, Gunnar, Saga, Kari and I always went everywhere together. We ate lunch together at school, had the same circle of friends and went to the same parties. Saga kept my secrets and I kept hers.We arrived at the Point, an hour late to our party. We liked to make an entrance. Gunnar and Kari drove behind me and Saga and parked next to me. Saga had her own car but for some reason she preferred to ride with me most of the time. She would drive herself only when she wanted to be alone, which didn’t happen very often. We got out of our cars and joined our friends on the beach. Some of them were already half drunk. I shook my head as Kari took my hand and I smiled at her as we headed toward the keg to get our own drinks. I’ve loved her for as long as I could remember. I knew how things worked, we would finish high school, go to college, get married and live happily ever after.Gunnar was fie

Kiran pulled out of the parking lot and headed toward our house, high up behind the forest, and glanced at me. “Your mother’s at home.”“Great,” I said with fake enthusiasm and Kiran laughed at me. If she’d been at the school instead of Kiran, she would have made me apologize to Mr. Jones in front of the whole class.Kiran drove up the dirt road and the house came into view. I looked at the strange Jeep parked in front of the garage and frowned. Kiran parked next to it and turned to look at me. I knew what was coming even though I wasn’t completely wrong.“Do we have visitors?” I asked him.“Happy belated birthday, Kai,” he said and sighed. “Although, after today I don’t know what your mother’s going to say.” Kiran took the keys from his jacket pocket and threw them over to me. “Really?” I couldn’t help the smile that spread across my face.“Yeah, just as I hoped you could go a few days without making trouble,” he said and chuckled.I spent a few minutes checking out my new Jeep and
