I shrugged and headed to my bedroom. There was a girl sitting on my bed and she watched me as I put my bag down next to my desk. She had deep purple marks around her neck and her eyes followed me as I moved around. She had probably hung herself.

“What do you want?” I asked her.

“She promised me that they would die,” she said and I turned to look at her.

“I can’t let her keep that promise, it’s wrong,” I said and she stood up. Her face was inches from mine and I could smell the decay on her.

“Then she’ll pay,” the girl said.

“I can promise you that they’ll pay for what they did,” I said.

“If you don’t keep this promise to my satisfaction, I’ll make you pay,” she said and pushed me up against the wall with her hand around my throat. She was strong and angry, her eyes were empty hollows of darkness, malicious and evil. She was gone in an instant and I stood against the wall and took a deep breath.

Sometimes spirits want something from you and when they don’t get it, they get angry. What

Bryan met Malachi and Levi on the tarmac as they exited the Council jet in New York. Malachi had received an image from an unknown number the night before. Conrad Baugarten’s lifeless body with a bullet hole in his forehead had been the subject of that image, just like Alex Jennings had promised.Malachi sat in the back of the SUV next to Levi, as Bryan drove through traffic to the Council building. There would be an uproar about Conrad’s murder, and the Council would expect a full investigation into one of their own.Malachi headed up to the boardroom, flanked on either side by Bryan and Levi, and Quintin trailing behind them. The three other sitting Alphas were already waiting for him.“Lucas, Gregory, Joseph,” Malachi greeted them, and they bowed their heads as he took his seat at the head of the table.“People are whispering that Conrad’s been executed,” Joseph said.“And so he has been,” Malachi said.Joseph narrowed his eyes. “You knew about this?”“Yes,” Malachi confirmed.“Did

Malachi and Levi drove to the Council ranch in silence. Levi had spent two full days silencing the Mexican cartel in Anaheim, making sure there would be no blow back to Kai.The Council’s ranch, in Montana, was located on Bitterroot Lake. It was built on the river with groves of trees flanking the house. It had wide open spaces, and it was quiet. The Council held meetings there, and once or twice, they’d invited future Council Alphas to the ranch.Malachi had another such meeting that night, and tomorrow they’d fly back to Alaska. He was tired, and he knew Levi was exhausted, as well, although he never showed it, and he would never complain about it.Malachi sat in the study, and was going through the Council’s financial records, when Levi opened the door. He seldom knocked, and he would appear in Malachi’s house, even when he knew all the doors had been locked. Levi was gifted like that, he could get in anywhere, and you never heard him coming.“I’ll be back in a bit. I know you’re

Kiran shook his head and looked at Adara. “Easy, Adara. He just got back like five minutes ago. Give him a chance to just be at home before you bombard him with questions.”Falcon stood up suddenly, realization dawning in his eyes as he looked intently at Jace. “What is it?” I asked him.“Jace has something he needs to tell you,” Falcon said, and I looked from Falcon to Jace.“What?” Jace asked him.“About that night you were taken,” Falcon said, and clenched his fists. Jace looked down, and I frowned.“Talk,” Kiran said in his Alpha voice, and I saw Jace swallow nervously.“When those guys came to the club, Kevin pointed me out to them. I don’t know what happened before I got there, but Kevin basically sold us out,” Jace said, softly.“Who is this Kevin?” Kiran asked.“I thought he was my friend,” Jace said.Kiran stood up, and gave me a look before walking off toward his study. I followed Kiran down the hall and prayed that Jace would keep his mouth shut about the other adventures

I drove up the familiar dirt driveway, and the house came into view. Jace gaped through the windshield, and I parked the car on the far side, on the outside of the garage. Falcon and Jace climbed out when I did, and they were both staring at the house. It was imposing when you saw it for the first time.I opened the garage and noted that neither of my parents were at home. That would make this a little easier. We walked in through the side door, and I wondered where they were. Adara mostly worked from home. The house felt too quiet but I was glad we were alone.“Home sweet home,” I said, as Falcon looked around, and I put my bag down on the floor.“Are you sure it’s okay that we’re here?” Falcon asked me, and I chuckled.“Of course, it is. Let me show you the guest rooms,” I said, and led them upstairs. “Make yourselves at home, take a shower, and relax. We’ll sort all the details out later.”I left them in their rooms to settle down, and went to my room. Everything was exactly as I’d

“Come on,” I said to Jace urgently, and he ran to me.“You’re bleeding,” he said, and I looked down.“I’ll be fine,” I said.I moved down the block of containers, about three rows away from where Falcon was, and toward the entrance where we had come in. The shots came at intervals now, and I hid Jace in a corner where he wouldn’t be spotted behind the pallets of wood.“I’ll come get you. Don’t move, no matter what,” I said. Jace didn’t say a word, but he crouched down low behind the wood. I went back to the front part of the containers, and crouched down on one knee, and started shooting.I saw it too late, and I felt the barrel against the back of my head. I lowered my rifle to the floor, and lifted my arms in surrender. “Get up, you’re that fag’s friend, the one from the club,” he said, and I stood up, and turned around. He smiled as he aimed the rifle at my face. “Move there where your friends can see you.”He shouted something to his friends in Spanish, and they withdrew to the s

“Do your thing, Kai. We’ll move in single file. I’ll be in front and Falcon can bring up the rear. We’ll find Jace first and extract him. If you can’t keep us hidden to extract, then we’ll go out shooting,” Levi said, and Falcon nodded.“Hylja sála,” I said, as I kept my hands on their shoulders. We followed Levi as he made his way to the building. We reached the warehouse, and Levi stopped and turned to look at me.“Can you open the door?” he asked me.“Rof,” I said, as the blue flames leapt into my hands, and the door creaked open. We walked into the building, and I caught Jace’s scent immediately, it was mixed with fear and blood.“This way,” I said, and turned left at the first container. They were stacked two on top of each other, about four feet apart, and stacked three deep, so that it almost made a maze. We walked past them, toward the back, where Jace sat tied to a chair with two men sitting at a table, smoking and playing cards.“I’m going up,” Levi said, and started climbin
