Asher’s POV

Callaghan stepped forward. “You really don’t want to keep talking, Crowne.”

“Oh, but I do,” Philip said, his gaze never breaking from Asher. “Because you’re not here for justice. You’re here for her. To prove she was never one of us. That she didn’t know what we were doing. Am I right?”

Asher didn’t answer. His jaw flexed once, twice, his silence a hardness that needed no words.

“I thought so,” Philip continued softly, as if they were old friends reminiscing over a ruined chessboard. “But you’re too late, Asher. The damage was done years ago. The files, the lies, the buried truths, they all serve their purpose. Even if you drag me out of here in handcuffs, the game won’t end. Because you’re still playing it.”

The officers behind Callaghan shifted like coiled ropes. Callaghan’s face was a mask, professional, unreadable, but Asher could see the impatience at the corner of his eye.

He’d wanted this moment clean: a room, an arrest, then the long, hard work of undoing what ha

Asher’s POV Asher sighed, rubbing his temple. “Yeah. You’re still on my payroll, Nolan. But right now, this case matters more than company lines. If your skills can speed things up, then that’s where I want you.”That earned him a faint grin. “Got it. I’ll keep you updated every step of the way.”“Good,” Asher said. “And keep everything logged, every move, every file, every handoff. If this goes to court, I don’t want anyone saying the evidence got lost or tampered with.”“Understood,” Nolan said. “I’ll make sure everything’s clean. If Crowne’s people try to erase anything, I’ll catch it before they can blink.”Asher gave him a look of quiet trust. “I know you will. Just be careful, alright? This isn’t just about data anymore. These people don’t play fair.”Nolan zipped up his laptop bag and nodded once. “I’ll watch my back,” he said simply. Then, with a quick glance at Callaghan, “Let’s go make them sweat.”Callaghan checked his notes and then looked back at Asher. “We have to move

Asher’s POVThe server room smelled like cold metal and dust, sterile, humming quietly with the energy of a hundred blinking lights. Asher hadn’t expected a shrine of evidence. He had expected a folder, a few lines of transactions, maybe the smoking gun. What they’d found made the air feel thicker, as if gravity had doubled.Project Eclipse glowed on the secure drive like a wound.Callaghan moved through the racks like a man who’d lived in places like this before. He hadn’t smiled since they’d led Philip Crowne away. That wasn’t the mood for smiles. Instead, his jaw worked as he scanned line after line: shell companies, offshore transfers, front vendors that didn’t exist, money siphoned through layers until it landed in accounts that had nothing to do with business and everything to do with power.“They’ve been careful,” Callaghan said, almost to himself. “But not careful enough.”Nolan was already here, tablet in hand, every muscle taut. “They fingerprinted dozens of accounts back

Asher’s POV Philip chuckled lowly. “Idealism. How charming. Tell me, does that keep you warm at night, now that your company’s in ruins and your reputation’s barely scraping by?”Asher’s teeth clenched. “I rebuilt. From the ashes you left me in. And Laurel, ” He caught himself, too late.Philip’s eyes sharpened instantly, catching the slip. “Ah,” he said slowly, his tone almost delighted. “So the girl survived, after all.”Asher said nothing, but his silence was enough.Philip laughed softly, shaking his head. “Fascinating. I had heard… other things.”Asher’s heart pounded, fury laced with disgust. “You heard wrong.”“I see.” Philip’s tone turned almost curious. “And where might our dear Laurel be these days? Still hiding behind your protection, pretending she’s a ghost?”Asher didn’t flinch. “She’s alive because she outsmarted you. And that’s something you’ll never forgive, is it?”Philip’s jaw twitched, the first real crack in his polished exterior. “She should have stayed gone,” h

Asher’s POV The cold air outside the corporate high-rise stung Asher’s face like needles. Sirens flared in the distance, but it wasn’t the noise that unsettled him, it was the realization of how deep the rot ran. From the tinted glass of the SUV, he could see men in navy jackets moving through the gleaming lobby, badges glinting under the lights, boxes in hand, evidence bags piling up by the minute.Detective Callaghan stood tall at the front of it all, clipboard in hand, issuing orders with calm precision. His voice carried authority, the kind that made people move without question. The building they were raiding tonight belonged to Vorenth Holdings, a sprawling financial firm whose reach extended like a spiderweb, from venture capital to tech startups, even government contracts. And beneath that polished surface, Asher now knew, it had been the heart of everything that destroyed him seven years ago.The heart of what destroyed Avery too.It all began to connect in Asher’s mind l

Laurel’s POV She ran a hand over her face, feeling the weight of it all settle in her chest again. “Every time I close my eyes, I still see that fire. The way the smoke swallowed the sky. And that ring, gleaming in the dark like it was mocking me.” She mumbled in a shaky voice.Callaghan was silent for a moment, then said quietly, “You said the files they burned could’ve proved who was really behind the transfers. Do you remember what was in them?”Laurel shook her head, her eyes unfocused as she tried to recall. “Not exactly. But I know one of the files mentioned offshore accounts and a project labeled ‘V-14.’ I never found out what that meant. But I think… I think that’s why they wanted me gone. Because I was starting to piece it together.”The detective jotted down the note and looked up again. “We’ll find out what ‘V-14’ means. You did good, Laurel. Really good.”Callaghan exhaled slowly. There was a brief silence where she felt that everything she was saying was perhaps too much
