“Ryland, get Tresia! Jace… Jace, get her mom! Jeremy, help me with her dad. They’re all fucking hurt.” I barely recognize my own voice as it’s full of emotions.
What the actual fuck. I did not have this shit on my bingo card for today. Once we manage to get Tresia and her family, Arlo pulls up next to us in his truck, loading everyone as quickly as possible, the truck tires squeal as he takes off. Looking at our mate, her mom and her dad, I’m speechless that it’s happening just as Gavin said it would. The six of us have always known that something was different about us.
Ryland is ridiculously strong, hyper-intelligent. Arlo, I’m not sure how I feel about it, but he can smell emotions. He says when he’s around a group of people, he feels as though he’s trying to smell a single flower in a bouquet of flowers. Very overwhelming.
Jace is a human lie detector. He’s never been wrong. Jace is another reason we’ve always known that the stories of ole are lies. Being selected to be a mate in a harem is a direct blessing from the Gods. We’ve always known the truth, we didn’t share it with others, but we knew.
Jeremy’s gift has come in handy on many different occasions. He has elemental controls. He can make it rain, snow, cause the wind to blow, whatever it is that’s weather related, he can make it happen. When we were kids, we thought it’d be cool to have a few days off school because of snow. That seriously backfired when he didn’t think about how to stop the snow. After the second night of nonstop snowfall, the consequences of his, or rather our actions, were clear. Road closures, power outages, avalanches and other things. Once he was able to make it stop, we made sure to be more careful in the future.
My gift is healing. All I need in the outside environment to heal a person, an animal or any living entity. No matter where we are, if Jeremy can bring the breathing environment close to where we are, I can use my gift of healing. The downside to using my healing ability is the energy it takes. I don’t mean the energy it takes from me, but the living environment I draw from. To heal one life, another must be sacrificed.
Placing my hand on Tresia’s father, I begin to heal him as we race down the road. Everyone needs to be in peek shape when we reach the mountain pass. When he pushes my hand off and insists that I heal Tresia first, I want to yell at him, but there’s no point in doing that.
Growling a bit, I place my hand back on him and when he looks at me with shooting daggers, I point to Tresia, “Look, she’s not as bad as you and your wife. My brother is taking care of our mate, now please, be still. You took most of the assaults aimed at your daughter. Your wife will be fine. She has a broken wrist, and a stab wound to that same arm’s hand. It won’t take me long to heal her.”
Using the life force of small bushes and patches of grass as we fly down the road puts me at ease. It bothers me when all the damage is in one location. I feel like I’m creating a scar, and I prefer not doing that. We’re almost at the drop off point for our mate’s parents. All our parents have been helping us get ready for this day for damn near as many years as we could explain what we knew.
“Once we reach the pull off a couple of miles from here, Tresia’s parents will go with our parents. Neither of you will ever be safe to return to City Central. A home has been built for the two of you in Outland Town. No matter what you think you know about Outland, I can promise you it’s all a lie. As your sons-in-law, we’ll protect you as much as we will Tresia. That’s an oath and a promise.”
“My parents aren’t coming with us? Why not?”
“Ah my sweet, we must go away for a while, but when we come back, you’ll be able to see them anytime you wish. They’re going to be under Outland protection and will have time to adjust to a new environment.”
Finishing up with her mother’s wrist, she looks up at me in surprise. A smile taking over her face, “We were told anyone with the curse was to be feared and cast out. I don’t understand what’s going on. We’ve already lost our son, Tresia’s twin brother, we can’t lose her too.”
“Misha’s alive and when we get to where we’re going, Tresia and Misha will be reunited. Reggie’s been truthful with you about everything and the rest of us will do the same. You know who I am, and you know the others; Ryland, Jace, Gavin and Arlo. The only one missing is Jeremy and you know him as well. You will understand everything soon enough. For now, we need your blind trust.”
It’s easy to see the leeriness in their eyes, but behind that is a resolve to protect each other and I admire that. Clark and Matty put their arms around Tresia while the three of them rest their foreheads against each other. The talk Clark gives them is emotionally charged and full of determination, but the pride he’s showing for Tresia is tear jerking.
“You’re a Michaels, and we know that everything happens for a reason. Your mother and I have always known you and your brother were gifts to us and destined for great things. Be true to yourself and your harem. We will be reunited one day and when that happens...”
Clark stops speaking when he feels the truck veer off the road and slide to a stop. We all look to the side of the truck as our parents scramble up onto the side of the truck. Clark embraces Tresia tightly and releases her as hands reach out to them.
“Clark, Matty, everything has been taken care of. Your house in City Center has been emptied and all your belongings has been moved to your new home in the Outlands. It’s an exact copy of your City Central home with slight variations, which we’ll show you after we arrive. Now, please say see you later to Tresia as she, her mates and Misha have a prophecy to fulfil.”
They’re all confused, but curious at the same time, which is good. Each of them will need an open mind to understand and deal with what’s to come. We reluctantly agreed not to say anything to Tresia’s family because Gavin told us that telling even her would alter how things happen. Jace backed up what Gavin said and made us all swear an oath not to say anything to anyone other than our parents.
Clark and Matty let go of Tresia to climb out of the bed of the truck. They give us stern parental looks, and my peripheral vision shows me that we each give them a nod of understanding and acceptance. She is our Fated Mate and the future of our world; we would give our lives before allowing any harm to come to her.
“Tresia, we promise to take care of your parents. Trust in your own instincts and trust your men. They’ve been preparing for this day since childhood. They love you more than life itself.”
Smiling at my mom, she backs away from the truck as Arlo begins to pull forward. “Keep them safe, stay safe, we’ll be back before you know it, and we’ll even do our best to bring back Misha’s troublesome ass.”
Everyone chuckles and we watch as longtime friends finally connect in a way they’ve not been allowed to. Our parents were kept apart because of birthright, money and politics, but not anymore. Now, we’ll all be one large happy family.
Elio woke me up with great news and amazing coffee. I not only get to see my parents again but I get to see Tresia and meet all her mates. I don’t know how my sister’s going to handle the six pack. Thinking about her and her mates hurts me because I should be starting my life with my mate and no one will give me a straight answer.Walking out of my kitchen I set my plate of pancakes down on the table while I slide into my chair. I’m not sure who Elio is talking to but I really need him to explain a few things to me. Taking a bite out of my breakfast, I raise an eyebrow at Elio when he turns around.“What?”“What do you mean, ‘what’? How about filling me in on what the hell is going on. My sister wants to see me and boom, she gets what she wants. She asks to see our parents, boom, she gets what she wants. I ask one question that should be a yes or no answer and I can’t get either out of you.” The look he gives me causes my temper to begin rising to the surface. “I already told you tha
Jeremy’s brown hair catches my attention as we’re touring the garden and the small plot of forest that we own. I really want to run my fingers through his hair, but his mind is elsewhere. It’s obvious he’s in his element as he’s telling me about all the different plants and the water features. They didn’t miss any detail I had noted in that book. They even got the exact wood I wanted.Once we’re done touring the outside, we walk through the Rustic Spanish Revival double doors. I was not paying too much attention to the style of house when we arrived, but I am now. The house, as well as the mother-in-law suites are designed in a rustic Spanish chalet. All of the buildings are made of white stucco. The main house has the red clay roofing tiles while the other buildings have a more traditional brown clay roofing tile. The contrast is beautiful.Closing the double doors behind me Ryland wraps his arms around my midsection and bends until he’s even with my ear. Kissing my neck and clearing
While the others are off checking in with other teams, checking on all of our parents and getting a report on the Veil distortion, I get to watch Tresia cook. It wasn’t until she entered the kitchen that I could truly see how happy she is. I’m not sure what’s exactly making her happy, us, the house or a combination of things. Personally, I vote it’s a combination of things. She needs this time of happiness because I’m sure there are rocky times ahead, so we’ll take the good moments when we can.As a Law Warden I’m trained to read people. I was selected to be a profiler but chose field work instead. I’m not the type to be content sitting behind a desk or in an office looking at reports and pictures. I much rather be out and about seeing things first hand and solving a mystery. “Tresia, what are you humming?”“Huh, oh…it’s an old song my mom used to sing to me and Misha to help pass the time.”Watching her cheeks flush to a rose red makes my heart speed up a bit. I’m hoping she’ll volu
We’ve all focused on five girls for years. We never knew which one exactly would be our mate, but we knew it would be one of them. All five of them had a lot in common. Tresia was the oldest, whether it be by days, weeks or months. She’s also the most intelligent and good gods, am I glad for that. It’s always been my job to observe her and it doesn’t look as though that’ll be stopping any time soon. None of us are in any kind of hurry to push her into things she may not be ready for. It’s one thing to prepare your entire life to mate with one partner. It’s an entirely different story when you all of a sudden have six mates.“You’re telling me everything, am I mean every…thing, I’ve been taught my entire life is based on a pack of lies made up by the Elders to discredit The Veil Goddess and everything to do with the Veil. How the heck has this never come out before? There have been new Elders and all kinds of changes through time. What is this, some kind of conspiracy held together by
When all the guys walk away to do whatever it is they need to do, I finally take a moment to look around the house I’m in. It’s easy to see that I’m in either a living room or a parlor. There’s a bay window in the center of the wall directly in front of me and the couch I’m sitting on is so comfy I could easily fall asleep on it.There are matching chairs on both sides of the couch. They look big enough to swallow me whole, but then I need to consider the size of my mates… Holy smokes. My mates. I have six mates. I know I had fantasies about having six mates, but it was just that, a fantasy.Redirecting my attention from the chairs, I see beautiful bookshelves full of all kinds of books. Turning to look around the room I see two more bookshelves, a China Cabinet and last but I’m sure not least, a big screen television. The colors they chose for this room are so perfect I don’t think I could have done better… wait. “What in Hadees handbag is going on?” Standing up and spinning around
“Ryland, you need to start talking to me. Everyone seems to know what’s going on, except me. I mean, I know my brother is gone. We just left my parents in the middle of nowhere and now we’re in the truck, on a trail up a mountain I didn’t know existed.”I hate that she’s been kept in the dark, but to be honest, we all have been, to a point. Her tears are what’s breaking me. So much has happened in a couple of days. Scooting over to sit beside her, I take a deep breath and ready myself for everything I need to tell her.“Tresia, listen. We don’t know everything. I wish we did. It might make whatever’s coming easier to handle. I’ll tell you what we do know, so bare with me.First of all, everything you were taught about the last Veil Mistress is a lie. Well, except the six mates. That part is true. The Elders at the time became threatened by her and her men. The reason she’s only referred to as Mistress is because her name was stricken from all records. Your six’s parents were told her
