“Ryland, you need to start talking to me. Everyone seems to know what’s going on, except me. I mean, I know my brother is gone. We just left my parents in the middle of nowhere and now we’re in the truck, on a trail up a mountain I didn’t know existed.”
I hate that she’s been kept in the dark, but to be honest, we all have been, to a point. Her tears are what’s breaking me. So much has happened in a couple of days. Scooting over to sit beside her, I take a deep breath and ready myself for everything I need to tell her.
“Tresia, listen. We don’t know everything. I wish we did. It might make whatever’s coming easier to handle. I’ll tell you what we do know, so bare with me.
First of all, everything you were taught about the last Veil Mistress is a lie. Well, except the six mates. That part is true. The Elders at the time became threatened by her and her men. The reason she’s only referred to as Mistress is because her name was stricken from all records. Your six’s parents were told her men's names by Dreamwalkers. Each of us are named after her men.”
I was expecting Tresia to look shocked at the bit of news she was just told, not the horrified expression I currently see. “You mean to tell me that not one of you owns your name? You were each named after someone else who was killed for crimes against City Central? And you’re all just accepting and alright with this?”
“Whoa Mate, you need to hear everything before you begin spouting the bull crap the City Central Elders have brainwashed you with. A lot is riding on the line for the seven of us, including all of our parents, siblings and siblings' futures. So how about you listen without spewing the holy that thou shit.”
Well hell. Jace just had to pop off at the mouth. I understand how he feels but he has to remember we’ve all been on this side for some time, Tresia hasn’t. She’s gone through a whirlwind in less than forty-eight hours. Rubbing my hand together, over my face, and through my hair, I clap them together, grabbing everyone’s attention.
“Jace, stop. You’re not helping and you’re forgetting that she’s just learning all this. Learning that everything you’ve been taught about one’s history isn’t easy. I remember you having a hard time with it. So, let up and give her time. To be honest, I never gave thought to not owning my name, as our mate so eloquently put it. What I did was consider it an honor to be named after the hero that gave his life trying to protect Outland from the attack that the Elders ordered.”
“We don’t have time for Missy here to go through all her feels about what’s real and what’s not. None of us want to be the bad guy pertaining to our reality, so I will.”
We’ve stopped and all but Jace and Tresia have unloaded from the truck. I don’t know if I’m annoyed or impressed with Jace at the moment. He’s told her everything, not sparing a single detail. Brutally telling her of how people were killed. How the Elders killed every child under the age of five out of a made up story. Scare the population enough they will flock like sheep to anyone that cries and shouts loud enough of salvation. The Elders became the unquestionable leaders. What they held and no one dared to question them, until now.
When they begin to exit the bed of the truck Tresia reaches out for me and without hesitation allow her to grab onto me. With her arms wrapping around my neck, her legs wrapping around my waist, I damn near cover her entire body with my arms. Her tears are soaking my shirt and I couldn’t care less. We all understand that her world has been flipped upside down and the best way to relieve stress is to cry.
Carrying her into the house through an already open door, the door closes behind us. I know Jace is the one that was following behind us, as he’s the one that walks around the two of us asking if we’d like some tea.
“Do you have any peppermint tea? It’s my favorite.”
The smile that takes over Jace’s face is contagious. I see the same smile on Arlo, Jeremy, Reggie, Gavin and myself. “Gorgeous, that is not a problem as it’s all of our favorite tea as well.”
Giving Gavin the credit for smiling is something of an inner joke. He doesn’t smile. Not in the average description of both ends of your mouth turning up into a smile. He more…smirks. Only one side of his mouth turns up. I think we’d all hit the ground if he were to give a full smile. He was born smirking and that’s all he’s ever done. Even his parents back that up.
When all the guys walk away to do whatever it is they need to do, I finally take a moment to look around the house I’m in. It’s easy to see that I’m in either a living room or a parlor. There’s a bay window in the center of the wall directly in front of me and the couch I’m sitting on is so comfy I could easily fall asleep on it.There are matching chairs on both sides of the couch. They look big enough to swallow me whole, but then I need to consider the size of my mates… Holy smokes. My mates. I have six mates. I know I had fantasies about having six mates, but it was just that, a fantasy.Redirecting my attention from the chairs, I see beautiful bookshelves full of all kinds of books. Turning to look around the room I see two more bookshelves, a China Cabinet and last but I’m sure not least, a big screen television. The colors they chose for this room are so perfect I don’t think I could have done better… wait. “What in Hadees handbag is going on?” Standing up and spinning around

After heating the kettle and placing everything we’ll need for a proper tea on a tray, I carry it into my small but adequate parlor. Setting the tray down, mom immediately busies herself pouring up the tea. They look as lost as I feel.“Mom, dad, the first thing I need you to know is…I’m sorry. I’m sorry I couldn’t say anything to either of you or my sister. A dreamwalker came to me a week ago and every night since then. Everything was planned out and before you ask, yes, even adding the alcohol to the punch. I don’t have a lot of answers, but what I do know… what I do know is going to change everything you both know.”I hate seeing the fear that’s taking over their expressions. I hate knowing I’ll never see the happy go lucky parents Tresia and I were raised by ever again. Hopefully, things will get better and quickly.“Misha, your mother and I begged to be able to see you before whatever is about to happen, happens. We’re limited on time, so how about you tell us the important parts
The Castle of the Veil, also known as the Veil Warden Academy, is a beautiful place, which is completely opposite to everything we’ve been taught our entire lives. It’s styled and decorated in the Renaissance era, and the courtyards are beautifully kept sitting areas. The entire vibe of the place is live and let live but respect each other. What in the feck is wrong with that? Why all the stories? Nothing I was taught from kindergarten to graduation is true. Why did they feel they needed to play all the cloak and dagger games? I am so confused but mostly, I’m angry as hell about losing my mate.“I don’t know why you’re upset, Misha. You knew what was going to happen. Everything was explained to you by one of our Dream Walkers. He was able to prove every detail to you so that you would believe him and set certain events in motion. As we’ve already told you, your sister and parents are alive and well.”I know that complaining isn’t going to accomplish anything other than annoy them and
“Ryland, get Tresia! Jace… Jace, get her mom! Jeremy, help me with her dad. They’re all fucking hurt.” I barely recognize my own voice as it’s full of emotions. What the actual fuck. I did not have this shit on my bingo card for today. Once we manage to get Tresia and her family, Arlo pulls up next to us in his truck, loading everyone as quickly as possible, the truck tires squeal as he takes off. Looking at our mate, her mom and her dad, I’m speechless that it’s happening just as Gavin said it would. The six of us have always known that something was different about us.Ryland is ridiculously strong, hyper-intelligent. Arlo, I’m not sure how I feel about it, but he can smell emotions. He says when he’s around a group of people, he feels as though he’s trying to smell a single flower in a bouquet of flowers. Very overwhelming.Jace is a human lie detector. He’s never been wrong. Jace is another reason we’ve always known that the stories of ole are lies. Being selected to be a mate in
“You sentenced him to death for an immature prank! I know I’m pissed off at him for doing it, but there’s no way I actually wanted him sentenced to death. He’s my twin brother for fuck’s sake!”“Tresia, you have to understand that laws are...”“I know why the damn laws exist, but I also know choices exist too and you could have made the choice to do anything else to him, but you didn’t. Mom, Dad, let’s go to the Oracle’s Temple at the Seat of Crown, so I can pull my card. It seems the elders have decided our family’s tradition should balance on the edge of a cliff.”While dad’s seeing everyone out, I’m trying in vain to get mom to breathe and calm down. There isn’t shit we can do about Misha, but hopefully my mate can begin to fill his void in mom’s life. It’s not the same, but at least it’s something. It took dad and I a few hours to get mom to come around. Giving her time to clean up, dad and I watch the day slowly pass by when we finally make it to the Oracle’s Temple. I technicall
