Chapter 1

My limbs felt like they were filled with lead.

Through the haze, I heard my brother Ryan’s voice outside the cell.

“Mom, dad, please let Ethan out. It’s his awakening day too. He can’t miss his first shift...”

“Enough!” Mom snapped. “Why are you still defending him? Have you forgotten what he was like the first time he showed signs of being more gifted than you?”

I knew exactly what she meant.

I was ten.

During a physical assessment for the pack’s young wolves, I came in first by a wide margin.

I ran home clutching my results, my face flushed with excitement.

“I did better than Ryan!”

Ryan’s eyes immediately reddened.

Mom burst into tears.

Dad stormed over and slapped me so hard I hit the floor.

Blood from my nose dripped onto the paper in my hand.

That night, they threw me out of the house and made me sleep outside in the freezing cold.

By the time they let me back in the next morning, I could barely feel my hands or feet.

“He’s always had to be better than everyone else,” Mom said coldly. “He knew about the prophecy, and he still rubbed it in Ryan’s face. He did it on purpose.”

I sagged against the cell door, too weak even to shake my head.

No, Mom.

I was ten. I was just a kid who wanted his parents to be proud of him.

I understood that they were terrified of losing Ryan.

But why did that mean they had to treat me like the enemy?

I was their son too...

My hand struck the door again and again. I needed them to understand that there really was silver poison in the chains.

“Mom, I’m not a kid anymore,” Ryan said urgently. “I’m not going to fall apart just because Ethan is better at something than I am. And I’m definitely not going to kill myself because his wolf turns out stronger than mine.”

“What if that witch was wrong? You can’t lock Ethan up because of a prophecy—”

“That’s enough!” Dad cut him off. “We are not taking that chance!”

Then he raised his voice toward the dungeon.

“Ethan, we’re doing this for our family. You don’t want your brother swallowing wolfsbane and killing himself because of you, do you?”

“Just stay in there until Ryan gets through his first shift. Then this will all be over, okay?”

I couldn’t answer. The silver poison was already in my bloodstream.

It felt like something was tearing my chest apart from the inside.

And then I felt something even worse.

My wolf was waking up.

Deep inside my mind, a wolf slammed desperately against its restraints, fighting to complete its first transformation.

My bones began to crack. My entire body shook with pain.

I gathered what little strength I had left and pounded on the door one last time.

Mom rushed over and kicked it.

“Ethan! What is wrong with you? Do I have to teach you another lesson?”

Then she pulled the door open. A narrow gap appeared.

A sliver of light spilled into the cell.

My heart lurched.

Was I finally going to be saved?

That night, Ryan fell asleep in front of the statue of the Moon Goddess.I stepped into his dream. For the first time since my death, he could see me.I was wearing clean clothes. There were no wounds around my wrists, no traces of the transformation that had failed to finish.I looked just as I had when I was alive, standing in a pool of brilliant moonlight.Ryan froze. Then he ran to me and wrapped his arms around me as tightly as he could.“Ethan—”He touched my face as if he needed to make sure I was real.“Ethan, I failed you. There were so many chances. I could have made Mom and Dad open that door.”“When the silver poison took hold... did it hurt?”I smiled and shook my head.“Ryan, it doesn't hurt anymore. Don't be sad.”He clung to me, crying too hard to speak.“I should have done more. I knew something was wrong. I shouldn't have backed down. I should have smashed that door open myself.”I took his hand.“Ryan, you did enough. You really did.”“Not once in eighteen years did

From that day on, Chloe was never the same.Every day, she came to the old dungeon and stood before the open iron door, calling my name over and over.“Ethan, I know you're still angry with me.”“Will you come out?”“Didn't we promise we'd go see the snow in the North after our awakening?”Her parents told her I was gone.Chloe acted as though she hadn't heard them. She came back the next day. This time, she sat outside the door with the awakening gift she'd meant to give me.“Ethan, I brought your gift.”“Don't be mad.”“Come out, and I'll give it to you right now.”She sat there the entire afternoon.Eventually, the Alpha and Luna came and took her home. For a long time afterward, she shut herself in her room and read through our old messages again and again....Ryan stayed beside me.He wouldn't let anyone near the ice coffin where my body lay. He simply held my rigid hand and talked to me for hours.“Ethan, I keep wondering why I couldn't have been better.”“If I'd been stronger,

She opened my notes and began reading them one by one.The first entry.[My training results came out today, but I don't feel happy at all. I did better than Ryan. I'm scared to go home. I don't know what to say if Mom asks. I'm afraid they'll think I was trying to upset Ryan again.]Mom stared at the date. I had been eleven. The second.[I got punished again. Mom kept asking why I always had to beat Ryan. It hurts. I really didn't do it on purpose. At least Ryan snuck me some food again. Maybe if I eat something, it won't hurt quite as much inside.]Ryan turned his face away. He remembered that night too.Mom kept scrolling. The third.[My instructor told me today that I might become one of the strongest young wolves of my generation. I said no. I can't. I'm scared. The last time I was chosen for the elite training group, Mom didn't speak to me for three days. I can't be better than Ryan. But I don't understand. I've tried so hard to be good. Why can't Mom and Dad love me even a littl

News of my death spread through the pack almost immediately. The elders and a Healer came to the dungeon. They removed my body from the chains. The Healer examined me carefully. At first, no one spoke. The Healer examined the blackened wounds around my wrists, then the bones that had begun to change before I died. His expression grew heavier.“Please,” Mom whispered. “What happened to my son?”The Healer looked at her.“His wolf awakened.”Mom froze.“What?”“Ethan began his first shift inside this dungeon.”“But he missed the awakening ceremony...”“The ceremony doesn't create the wolf. His body was ready, so the awakening began anyway.”He lifted one of my hands. My nails had never fully returned to normal.“These are signs of an interrupted transformation.”Ryan stared at my hand.“His wolf was trying to save him?”“Yes.”Mom shook her head. “Then why didn't he heal?”“Because the silver was already in his bloodstream. His wolf kept forcing the shift, but every attempt only pushed t

The dungeon door swung all the way open.My body lay curled against the freezing stone wall, my wrists still shackled in iron chains. The skin the silver poison had burned was already black. One hand was still stretched toward the door.Mom collapsed to the floor. She tried several times to get up, but her legs wouldn't hold her. In the end, she crawled. Her knees dragged across the cold stone as she made her way, inch by inch, to my body. She reached for my hand. Her fingertips met cold, rigid skin.“Ethan... how did this happen...?”Mom's voice shook so badly the words barely came out.“The silver poison was supposed to be gone... Ethan, my Ethan...”Then her gaze slowly dropped to my wrists. The black blood had already dried, with tiny flecks of silver embedded in the wounds.Even the chains around my wrists still glinted faintly with traces of silver.Something seemed to lodge in her throat. She couldn't make another sound. She just knelt there, trembling uncontrollably.Dad rushed

Ryan was awake, but he was still weak from his first shift.Every time he tried to get out of bed, mom forced him back down.By the next morning, he had recovered enough strength to stand. The moment he could keep his balance, he rushed out of the room.“Mom, Dad, I’m okay! The prophecy didn’t come true. Let’s go tell Ethan!”Dad nodded, his eyes reddening.“Yes. It’s over now. Let’s go home. Ethan has been in that dungeon for two days. He should have had enough time to think about what he did.”“We’ll pick him up, and then the whole family can go to the Moon Goddess Temple and pray together.”Tears slipped down Mom’s cheeks.“I know I’ve been hard on Ethan. But if he finally learns from this, then from now on, whatever Ryan gets, he’ll get too.”I hovered beside them and smiled, though it hurt more than crying ever could.Mom. Dad.I had waited eighteen years to hear that. Too bad I would never live to see it.They returned home soon after.Ryan ran ahead of everyone. Then he stopped.
